地球上70.8%的面积为水所覆盖，而其中98%都尚未被人类利用。在面临着人口压力与过度城市化的危机下，如何分配有限的土地资源将会是一个不可避免的社会问题。面对这些问题，水上建筑不乏是一种节约土地资源的理想方式。同时，漂浮的水上建筑相对具有灵活性，能适应不同水位与气候条件的变化，不仅给人们提供了一种全新的生活方式，还为因气候变暖海平面上升而遭受损失的沿海国家或地区谋求了发展出路。除了承担水运交通枢纽的功能外，得天独厚的地理条件为水上建筑赋予了巨大的景观优势，因此也经常作为文化建筑与休闲娱乐建筑出现。人类的文明起源于水，自古以来万千的冒险者都梦想着去征服更广阔的水域，如今，人们更加重视人与自然的和谐联系，而水上建筑就是建筑师与设计师们给出的答卷。
