In the late summer of this year, the gooood Team came to Sanlitun in Beijing to listen to some citizens and tourists share their thoughts on the city’s commercial public spaces. They talked about why they came to Sanlitun, what they saw, and what they felt was missing, sparking reflections on the relationship between commercial spaces and urban culture, and between internationalization and local identity. From the respondents’ words, we could sense that people living in the city often hold a feeling of attraction toward “bustling and lively places,” yet with a slight sense of detachment, as they put it: “This place is considered one of the more developed and prosperous areas in Beijing.” “Sanlitun is a commercial street with extremely strong commercial character and comprehensiveness.” According to the travel information provided by the respondents, many people did not come to Sanlitun just for a casual stroll nearby, but were drawn by images on social media, or came specifically to experience its trendy atmosphere—”a place more suitable for us young people to visit these trendy IP gathering spots.”

In terms of how they use the commercial space, some people enjoy admiring the architectural facades, some like shopping, and others simply want to sit around in a lively place. But overall, there were clear differences in what people paid most attention to at Sanlitun—for instance, some favored the crystalline blue facade of LV, which resembles glass paper; others appreciated the varied store designs of Dior; and still others felt that the simplicity of the Apple store was the most enduringly attractive. We also found that people actually have fairly deep observations about the space at Sanlitun—some residents noticed that the northern district has fewer restaurants than the southern district and not enough entertainment options, while another respondent candidly remarked, “It’s very Taikoo Li, but not very Beijing.” In addition, affected by the summer heat, many respondents said there were “too few places to sit” and that “more misting fans could be installed,” with some hoping for more drinking water fountains and rest areas. Previously they might have wandered longer, but now they just wish for a cool place to take a break.

When the conversation turned to how people feel about commercial spaces in the city, one respondent mentioned that Sanlitun’s buildings are multi-layered and interconnected, with people walking on bridges above—a feature they found quite interesting, as “I haven’t seen many places like this elsewhere in Beijing.” Another respondent, a long-term resident of New York, compared Sanlitun to Times Square and Fifth Avenue, feeling that Sanlitun shares a similar vibrancy yet feels more inviting—”Times Square is somewhere we would never go, because it’s just too crowded.” At the same time, someone else pointed to Taikoo Li in Chengdu as an example, noting that a giant panda sculpture sits outside the Chengdu complex, which beautifully incorporates local characteristics, whereas Sanlitun in Beijing seems to lack some elements of Beijing’s own identity. From these words, we can sense that people’s expectations for commercial spaces have long surpassed the mere need for shopping—they want places with character, with warmth, where they can truly be willing to stay. As one respondent put it: “It’s very Taikoo Li, but not very Beijing.”
