The 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) concluded successfully at Shougang Park on 13 September 2026. The Shougang International Exhibition Town, located within Shougang Park approximately 19 kilometers west of central Beijing, is a landmark project of Beijing’s recent urban revitalization. It also marked the first public debut of CIFTIS as a permanent venue, following the end of its five-year temporary “one fair, two venues” operation and the official shift to the “one fair, one venue” mode. This edition of CIFTIS registered a total of 942,000 visits, with daily visitor numbers exceeding 235,000 at its peak. Its settlement-style spatial layout weaves industrial heritage, urban streets and exhibition functions into a cohesive whole, delivering a distinctive experience for exhibitors and visitors that differentiates it from standardized exhibition halls – and lifted CIFTIS to a historic high. Since 2015, the park has undergone continuous renewal and transformation, evolving through two defining development phases: the Olympic mega-event phase and the post-Olympic transformation phase.

Phase 1: Olympic Mega-Event Era (2015–2020)
Delivered in tandem with the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, this phase saw the completion of key venues and facilities across the park, including Xishi Winter Olympics Plaza, the National Winter Sports Training Center, No. 3 Blast Furnace Museum & Global Premier Center, Chang’an Mills, Big Air Shougang, Oxygen Factory Tencent Broadcast Center, and Shangri-La Hotel. These projects laid a robust physical foundation for the Olympic Games and completed the site’s initial transformation from industrial relic to a public destination for urban events and supporting facilities.

Phase 2: Post-Olympic Transformation Era – CIFTIS Permanent Venue (From 2021)
In 2021, Shougang Park officially entered its post-Olympic upgrading phase. To transcend the limitations of event-driven cycles and activate long-term development momentum, the park launched its bid to host CIFTIS exhibition area. Under the core concept of “Explore Shougang, Experience CIFTIS, Embrace the Olympics”, Shougang Park secured a five-year temporary exhibition license from 2021 to 2025, operating under a “one fair, two venues” mode – with Shougang as the main exhibition venue and the China National Convention Center hosting conferences. This realized the temporary activation of industrial heritage for exhibition use, opening a new chapter for the area’s functional evolution.

A major breakthrough came in 2023, when No. 4 Blast Furnace was converted into the permanent Shougang International Convention and Exhibition Center – Beijing’s first on-site industrial heritage reuse project of its kind. Between 2024 and 2025, driven by Beijing’s “One River, Two Parks” strategic framework, Shougang Park was formally designated the permanent venue for CIFTIS, ending the five-year dual-venue arrangement and consolidating both exhibition and conference functions on site. The area has since become a core engine for industrial upgrading, exhibition industry agglomeration and urban regeneration in western Beijing.

Core Design Philosophy: De-standardized Exhibition, Settlement-style Urban Space
The project completely rejects the conventional efficiency-first layout of traditional exhibition buildings – concentrated, fishbone-shaped and box-like layout. Drawing on the spatial logic of open urban settlements in Europe and America, it takes the park-like wandering experience of industrial heritage as the core feature of the exhibition precinct, breaking the single functional attribute of exhibition architecture to create a settlement-style exhibition layout that prioritizes urban experience.

In 2025, the consortium team of Allies and Morrison (UK) & CCTN Design won the international design competition for the Exhibition Town. Guided by the underlying design logic of “Planning Then Buildings; Space Then Buildings”, the scheme establishes an overall spatial framework of two intersecting axes: the north-south Industrial Heritage Green Axis, and the east-west Urban Vitality Axis connecting the city and the waterscape. The two axes meet at the heart of the Exhibition Town. The design prioritizes the creation of diverse and active public open spaces. Through the precise alignment of plazas, streets and courtyards, it shapes an exhibition building cluster with complete urban fabric and atmosphere, rather than isolated functional buildings.

Overall Spatial Structure: Woven Halls, Multi-dimensional Landscape Dialogue

Anchored by Hall 1 (the converted No. 4 Blast Furnace, renewed in 2023), the Exhibition Town weaves three new buildings – Hall 2, Hall 3 and Hall 4 – into the north, northeast and east sides of the site. The four halls work in synergy, with old and new structures coexisting to form the complete spatial body of the town.

Set around two core public spaces – the Central Plaza and the Sunken Garden – the project creates a three-dimensional landscape sight system with near, medium and far views, achieving the in-depth integration of architecture, industrial heritage and natural mountains and rivers: Distant views frame Dingdu Peak, Qianling Mountain, the Western Hills and the Yongding River, forming a dialogue between the city and the natural landscape. Medium views connect iconic industrial structures across the park, including the blast furnaces, Xinshougang Bridge and Shijingshan Merit Stele Pavilion, weaving together the site’s industrial memory. Near views create flexible and diverse exhibition support scenarios through layered streets, Sunken Garden and pedestrian spaces, complementing the exhibition experience.

This network of open spaces organically links the Southern Open Green Axis Park and the Northern Blast Furnace Heritage Park, achieving full spatial connectivity across the district. Hall 3, designed as a floating green park, acts as a key nodal point and spatial anchor for the Industrial Heritage Green Axis. Small-scale conference buildings attached to each hall align with the urban street edge, connected throughout the site via second-level skybridges, escalators and vertical lifts. This arrangement softens the imposing scale of the large exhibition buildings, allowing new architecture to blend naturally with the original industrial heritage.

Three-dimensional Circulation: Garden-like Wandering, Themed Spatial Experience
The main entrance is the Floating North Registration Hall on South No. 2 Blast Furnace Road. From here, the new Hall 2 and Hall 3, together with the existing Hall 1, enclose a welcoming, human-scaled inner courtyard. A three-sided aerial corridor links the second-floor Registration Halls, the upper entrances of each exhibition hall, the rooftop terrace of Hall 1 and the supporting facilities of Hall 3, extending south to No. 3 Blast Furnace and east to Hall 2 to form a complete three-dimensional elevated pedestrian network.

Vertical external galleries redefine the building’s scale, creating three distinct spatial layers – plinth, intermediate floors and roof – and softening the monumentality of the large-volume structure. The sunken garden, inspired by classic civic plaza typologies, uses gentle, flowing curves to reconfigure the scale of retail amenities and public space, bringing a soft, tactile quality to the hard-edged built environment. A cascading folded escalator system connects the basement, ground floor, second floor, third floor and the roof garden of Hall 3, producing a zigzag, mountain-like roofscape that translates the traditional Chinese garden principles of wandering paths and shifting scenery into a modern architectural language.

As a distinctive fifth façade, the rooftop space of Hall 3 opens up panoramic views of the surrounding blast furnace heritage, the Western Hills and the wider Shijingshan Mountain landscape, while also activating the adjacent Rong Square and Huaxia Bank Building to form a site-wide three-dimensional landscape system.

New-Old Symbiosis: Consumption Scenarios and Dynamic Nodes
The core connection zone of the North Registration Hall brings together multiple layers of industrial history: the preserved and repurposed dust fan house (One Step Garden), high bunker (Nineteen Artisan Restaurant), the historic approach bridge of No. 1 Blast Furnace, and the original blast furnace base. These are layered with native vegetation, industrial relics, new small-scale conference buildings and the renovated powder workshop, framed by the architecturally composed views of the North Registration Hall to form a rich, multi-layered industrial landscape system that merges past and present.

Abundant spatial relationships – framed views, borrowed scenery and reciprocal vistas – run throughout the site, creating a continuous interplay between old and new architecture, history and modernity, raw industrial fabric and refined contemporary construction, and shaping urban spaces of striking drama and depth. A unique two-way pedestrian perspective gives the site a strong sense of urban scenography: whether entering the park from the city or looking back out from the courtyard, visitors perceive a cohesive, complete urban atmosphere – a deliberate departure from the insular, anti-urban character of conventional single-function exhibition buildings.

The entire complex effectively stitches together Rong Square, Huaxia Bank Building, No. 1 Blast Furnace · SoReal Sci-Fi Paradise, Migu Sports, No. 4 Blast Furnace International Convention and Exhibition Center, the No. 2 and No. 3 blast furnace cluster, and Chang’an Mills to the west. The result is an urban complex in northern Shougang Park that functions as a hub of activity, social exchange and spatial integration – dense, inclusive and rich in immersive urban experience.

Design Essence: A Micro-city That Grows Naturally
The design of the whole Shougang International Exhibition Town achieves an organic symbiosis and subtle dialogue between contemporary architecture, historical industrial heritage and natural landscape textures. The whole district feels as though it has grown and settled gradually over time, with no trace of forced design. Through a gentle, systematic and refined approach to regeneration, the project comprehensively mends and re-weaves the fragmented industrial, landscape and urban spaces of northern Shougang Park. Its core value lies not in delivering a set of standardized, functional exhibition halls, but in rebuilding urban fabric, reshaping public life and revitalizing the area on the foundation of its industrial past – truly creating a micro-city of exhibitions that grows naturally, coexists across eras, and combines human warmth with bold urban vision.
