Studio Puisto proudly announces the opening of the new Wellness Center Loiske in Ähtäri. This state-of-the-art facility is open to public, but also serves as the pool for Hotel Mesikämmen, thus complementing the culturally significant architectural landscape of the hotel. The new wellness center offers a unique wellness experience at the affordable price of 5/3€, making high-quality spa and wellness services accessible to a broad audience.

Loiske Wellness Spa is located in the Ähtäri Zoo area, in the immediate proximity of Sauna Restaurant Kiulu, designed by Studio Puisto, and Hotel Mesikämmen, designed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, the brothers renowned for Finland’s number one tourist destination, the Temppeliaukio Church. The new building respects and complements the uniquely well-preserved, nature-loving brutalism of the 1970s forest hotel.

Studio Puisto’s mission was to create a unique, feeling- and experience-evoking wellness center while still adhering to the standards of equitable use. Loiske stands out with its serene and luxurious material palette, characterized by the simplicity and elegance of Nordic minimalism. To give users an unforgettable haptic experience, tactile materials that echo the aesthetics of Mesikämmen, such as in-situ cast concrete, timber, and natural stone, were used.

Like Hotel Mesikämmen, Loiske embraces experiential contrasts. The seemingly closed-off and humble building gradually opens towards the light-flooded pool areas. Despite the size of the pool areas, the spaces feel intimate and tangible due to varying spatial heights that parse the ambiance. The design principle of “space within a space” enables intuitive use and effortless customer experience. Boulder-like saunas and special pools partition large areas, creating atmospheric transitions between functions. Changing and washing facilities serve as interlaying spaces, which are differentiated with colors and scales distinctly different from the larger pool areas.

Loiske offers diverse and high-quality services, making it an ideal place for relaxation and rejuvenation. The main pool area is flooded with natural light and surrounded by lake and nature scenery, with sunlight creating reflections on the carefully crafted concrete surfaces inspired by Mesikämmen. The spa area includes a jacuzzi, cold pool, and rocky landscape saunas, along with a children’s pool. The therapy area features a therapy pool with massaging water streams, and the outdoor sauna offers a sauna experience with the possibility to cool off in the scenery of Lake Hankavesi. These amenities together provide a comprehensive wellness experience for visitors of all ages. The wellness spa’s location near the zoo enables an unforgettable and refreshing day for both locals and travelers.
