Appreciation towards van wang architects (VWA) for providing the following description:

2017年下半年，我们赢得了在深圳南头古城设计和实施改造城中村公共空间的机会。与双年展的展览不同，它虽然规模更小，但能够有机会成为永久性的装置或者家具一直保留在古城里，并且能够切实的改变着村民的生活。对于这样一个不同于典型公共空间的场所，狭小，拥挤，混乱是它原始的状态。街道被暂用，晾晒衣物，堆满杂物，夏天臭气熏天，没有能够供孩子玩耍的空间都是整个村子存在的普遍现象。在这种情况下，我们希望能够设计出一套系统去解决这些问题，能够去适应现场的状态，减少对已有生活习惯的干预，同时创造出供人们停留交流的积极空间。

▼场地现状，Initial site

In the second half of 2017, we won the opportunity to design and implement the regeneration project of public space in the urban village, located in Nantou Ancient City, Shenzhen. Different from typical public space, the original condition of this place is narrow, crowded and chaotic. The streets were temporarily used to dry clothes, cluttered with sundries, were stinky in the summer, and no room for children to play. This was a common phenomenon in the entire village. In this situation, we hope to design a system to solve these problems, to adapt to the state of the scene, to reduce the interference with existing lifestyle habits, and to create a positive space for people to stay and communicate.

我们设计了一系列功能性的模块组成，这里包含了垃圾箱，晾晒衣物，自行车停放，物品摆放，花架这样的基础单元，又有供人休息，交流，小朋友玩耍的社交单元。这些单元倚墙而立，不占用过多已经较为局促的公共场所，根据不同场地的实际情况单元通过自由组合以满足不同的需要。同时随着时间的发展，需求的改变，它们也可以被个别的增减和替换。

We have designed a series of functional modules which includes the basic unit of trash cans, drying clothes, bicycle parking, items placement, flower racks, and social units for people to rest, communicate, and play with children. These units are erected against the wall and do not occupy too many public places that are already in shortage. According to the actual situation of the different site, the units are freely combined to meet different needs. With the changes of time and demands, they can also be separately increased and decreased and replaced.

在城中村的环境里，单元需要有足够的耐用度，我们尽可能的减少了构造的复杂性，采用最直接的铁方管和木材作为基本材料，采用工厂加工，现场安装的方式，在控制造价的前提下，最大可能的保证质量，并能够大大缩短施工的周期。我们希望这样的一套设计策略能够促使当地的村民也自行组装，能够在未来将这套系统运用到其它场地的改造中去，而不一定需要设计师的参与。

In the urban village environment, the unit needs to have sufficient durability and simplify the construction as much as possible. We use the most direct iron square pipe and wood as the basic material, and use factory processing and field installation methods. Under the premise of controlling the cost, the greatest possible quality is guaranteed, and the construction period can be greatly shortened. We hope that such a set of design strategies will encourage local villagers to participate in the assembly and that it will be able to apply this system to other sites in the future without necessarily requiring the participation of designers.
