为什么出国？
Why going abroad?

初中的时候，我受好朋友的影响开始接触西方的文化、音乐和电视剧（最爱的电视剧依旧是老友记！），萌生了想要留学的念头。我一直都喜欢艺术和创作，所以本科选择专业的时候就选了景观设计，去了有“花园城市”之称的墨尔本。

My friend and I started to become familiar with Western TV shows and music in junior high school, and the idea of studying abroad stemmed from our interest in Western culture. I always liked arts and crafts, so I chose to study landscape architecture for my undergraduate degree and went to Melbourne, Australia’s garden city.

在国外遇到了什么让你印象最深刻的事情？
What impressed you the most when you are abroad?

我印象最深的事情就是我在美国得到了一个评估整个中国国家公园体系的机会，这件事情转变了我的理念，我明白了我必须主动，对自己负责，对我想完成的事情负责。就算当下不成功，你播下的这个种子，总有一天，在条件满足的情况下，会生根发芽的。

我在伯克利的时候就对中国建立国家公园这件事很感兴趣，但当时因为人远在海外，没有经费，也没有任何认识的人，只能作罢。机缘巧合，我了解到前美国国家公园管理局局长乔纳森·贾维斯先生在伯克利设立了一个研究公园的机构，他和保尔森基金会有一系列协助中国建立国家公园的项目。我十分激动，当时就发了邮件给贾维斯先生，对他表达了我对这个项目的兴趣以及我对中国国家公园的看法。之后，他邀请我去他的研讨会。进一步沟通几次后，他邀请了我参加他的项目，让我有机会能去三江源国家公园实地考察，向一群经验丰富的国家公园专家们学习交流。因为一起工作这个经历，贾维斯先生也成为了我人生中最重要的的导师之一。

我经常拿这个例子说给身边的人听，希望能鼓励到很多想法，但是只需要一点勇气加持的朋友和后辈。只要主动一点，你能收获到的会超过你的想象，特别在美国这个处处是机会之地。

The thing that impressed me most was that I was given an opportunity to evaluate the entire China’s national park system. Doing so, I learned that I had to be proactive, responsible for myself, and responsible for what I wanted to accomplish. Plant your seed, and it will sprout one day when the conditions are met.

When I was at UC Berkeley, I became very interested in the new national park system that China is planning to establish by 2030. However, I couldn’t do too much research or work about it because I didn’t have funding and connections while in the US. I learned from my friends that Mr. Jonathan Jarvis, the former director of the US National Park Service, had established a research program about parks at Berkeley, called the Institute of Parks, People and Biodiversity. This institute and the Paulson Institute have a series of projects that assist China in building national parks. I was so excited that I emailed Jon directly, expressing my interest in the project and my views on China’s national parks. After that, he invited me to his brown bag meetings, and subsequently we talked about parks several times. Eventually, he invited me to join his interdisciplinary evaluation team, which gave me the opportunity to evaluate Sanjiangyuan National Park, announced to be the first national park of China in 2020. I am fortunate to have situated myself with a group of experienced national park experts to discuss and learn about parks. Because of our experience working together, Jon also became one of the most important mentors in my life.

I often tell this story to people around me, hoping to inspire whoever needs some encouragement. The US is a land of opportunity; if you take the initiative, you can reap more than you can imagine.

最想念祖国的什么？
What do you miss the most about China?

家里人。因为疫情，上一次回家是2019年了，真心希望所有在外游子们能有机会早日回一趟家。我在外生活的这些年，也时常想念家乡的气息。我生长的地方，龙岩，是个四处环山，气候温和，邻里关系紧密，人们爱食、热情好客的小城市。我对家乡的思念，也体现在我的设计作品里，平和有温度。

My family. I haven’t been home since 2019 because of the global pandemic. I sincerely hope that all those who are far away from home can go back home as soon as possible. I also miss the city where I grew up. Longyan is a small, peaceful city with lots of green. The city is surrounded by mountains and close to the sea, so we have diverse choices of food. People are blessed with a mild climate, and we have close-knit relationships with our families and friends. I believe people are shaped by the environment, and my power comes from the loving environment that I grew up in. Thus, I am inspired to create warm and peaceful places for people through design.

你会回国吗？为什么？
Will you come back? Why?

看机遇。对于现阶段的我来说，我的目标是在生态设计上尽可能学习最先进的知识，把握更好的机会。

Yes, eventually. But at this stage of my life, my goal is to seize opportunities elsewhere and learn the most advanced knowledge and skills in ecological design.

出国后在不同的背景下再看中国是否看得更清晰，有哪些感触？
Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?

一方面，我觉得有看得更清晰。出国后，因为希望更多外国人了解中国独特的文化和国情，而不是只停留刻板印象，所以我会更加想了解中国的历史、文化、政治、经济、设计，希望自己能描述出一些关于中国更生动的故事。

但是另一方面，长期不在国内生活，脱节是一定的。特别是我在做中国国家公园项目研究的时候，时常苦于我无法深入调研。

Yes and no. On the one hand, I view China more comprehensively because I make sure I know about my country’s history, culture, politics, economy, design, and so forth, so I can describe China to others—both the good aspects and the mistakes we have made. Many walls in this world have been built upon stereotypes and ignorance, and this is not what I want in my life.

On the other hand, everything about China has become blurry to me because I haven’t lived in the country for a long time. Moreover, it is hard to conduct research about China’s national park system when I cannot be in the field and spend time in communities there.

你的学校有哪些教育特点？
What are the educational characteristics of your school?

首先，伯克利景观设计与环境规划系的教育与研究氛围很开放，教授和课程设置着力支持学生不同的兴趣。每个人学到的都不一样，有的人偏人文、社会公平，有的人偏美学，等等。我个人认为我受到的教育强调科学性，深化了我对生态设计的理解。伯克利还有很好的一点是培养了学生的责任感和眼界，教育我们作为景观设计师，我们对社会和环境是有责任的。

我当时选择来伯克利，主要就是因为伯克利是个强调公众利益的公共大学，更符合我的人生理念。伯克利也是个好的平台，我遇到很多志同道合的伙伴，也得到很多专业以外的机会。

First, the atmosphere of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP) at UC Berkeley is very open. We have professors with diverse research interests, and the curriculum is designed to support and encourage students to pursue their own interests, whether it is social justice, aesthetics, and so on. My interest is in ecological design, and the LAEP curriculum allowed me to spend half my time in the design track and half in the environmental planning track. Another outstanding thing about

Berkeley is its cultivation of students’ sense of responsibility and vision as future landscape architects. We learned to be responsible to our society and the environment.
The reason I came to Berkeley was mainly its reputation for emphasizing the public good, which aligns with my aspirations. Berkeley provided me a great setting to meet many like-minded people.

你现在工作公司的特色和有趣的地方？
What are the characteristics and interesting points of your firm?

BASE聚集了一群关注传粉者及其栖息地的景观设计师，我们每一个设计项目都包含了多种蜜源植物。我们最著名的一个项目，多洛雷斯传粉者大道从2016年设计至今，成为了我们研究蜜源植物和传粉者的地方，我们定期也会举办志愿者活动，让更多人了解传粉者花园。

校园设计一直是BASE的另一个强项。我在BASE工作期间，感悟最深的就是场地考研的时候，亲眼看到很多公共小学、中学急需改良的环境——操场上一望无尽的沥青铺路，寥寥无几的几棵树。希望通过我们的设计改良，可以尽可能地给学生们提供一个有创造力的、活力、色彩、环境教育的成长环境。

我的公司是一个女性移民领导的设计事务所。关注少数群体的利益，鼓励群众参与设计过程一直是BASE最重要的宗旨之一。我参与的公园、经济适用房和规划项目都有举办研讨会，倾听群众们的声音，我自己也从中也学到了很多东西。我印象很深的一点是，我们在不同的社区需要注意自己用的词汇和语言。例如，在一些情况比较糟糕的地区，人们可能会对“美化”和“清理”有些抗拒，因为居民可能会映射到人的身上。

BASE brings together a group of designers who care about providing habitats for pollinators and bees. All our design projects contain a variety of pollinator-friendly plants. Among those, Pollinator Boulevard is our most famous project for bees. It was designed around 2016, and we are still maintaining the garden, studying plants, and hosting volunteer programs to spread the love and knowledge for pollinator garden.

Education and play are other strong areas of expertise at BASE, and we have been extensively working to renovate and design new schoolyard schools. It was very sad to see with my own eyes public elementary and middle schools in urgent need of improvement, and I am proud to convert asphalt schoolyards into vibrant, colorful places with trees, gardens, and play and sports equipment for students.

BASE is a female- and immigrant-led design firm, and our commitment is to leverage minority groups by listening to and adapting their needs in the design process. I have participated in many community outreach projects, including for park, affordable housing, and planning projects, and I am learning a lot from both these processes and my colleagues. The most important point I’ve learned so far is to be very careful with our language, as meanings vary across different neighborhoods. Not being careful can trigger misunderstandings. For example, “beautification” and “cleaning up the area” could be interpreted as getting rid of people in tougher neighborhoods.

最喜欢的艺术家（绘画音乐电影等广泛范围）是谁？给你创作带来了什么影响？
Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?

我最喜欢的是导演是克里斯托弗·爱德华·诺兰，他的电影我都很喜欢，特别是《蝙蝠侠：黑暗骑士》。我喜欢他对人性、道德的考究，还有对时间、空间和记忆的处理。他的作品总给我一种，夜里透露一丝光的希望。时间、空间尺度、人文、希望也都是我创作时的重要考量。

景观的话是乔治·德贡，因为他设计了我最喜欢的日内瓦艾尔河修复项目。与传统的河流修复项目不同，乔治把地形切割成一个个菱形沟渠，用这个指标来向人们展示河流流动的过程。同时，他把相邻的运河改造成河流花园，来吸引更多人使用这个场地。他的作品有大胆、浪漫、人文、美学，更有生态考量，是我设计上的标杆。

My favorite director is Christopher Edward Nolan. I love his movies, especially The Dark Knight. His work always gives me a kind of hope that reveals a glimmer of light in the night, and I adore his scrutiny of humanity, morality, and his handling of time, space, and memory. Time, spatial and temporal scales, and providing a sense of hope are also important factors in my design process.

In the realm of landscape architecture, it would be Georges Descombes, the lead designer of my favorite project, Renaturation of the River Aire in Geneva, Switzerland. Unlike designers of typical river restoration projects, Descombes showed people river channel migration by forming lozenge islands in the river corridor as indicators of transformations, simultaneously creating public access and engagement by turning the adjacent canal into a “river garden.” Descombes’s works are bold, humanistic, aesthetic, and, most importantly, embed ecological consideration.

觉得自己的作品集有哪些迷人的特质？
What fascinates viewers the most in your portfolio in your opinion?

第一是强调生态。我作品集的主旋律就是设计结合自然，我最擅长的是借助地理信息系统(GIS) 建构设计过程。我有多个项目是基于GIS的，这次提供的一个项目是我研究生时期获得生态民主奖学金的毕业论文，我展示了如何在河流修复项目里，收集、管理、分析、展现和利用数据设计访客解说线路。在BASE的项目，我将着重介绍基于湾区本地的植物设计。

第二是多样性。我的作品集收集了我每个阶段最重要的作品，也代表了我不同的面向，有不同尺度的设计作品、规划分析、公众参与、研究报告等等。

第三强调小组合作。在我的作品集里大部分都是小组合作的作品，每一个都取得了很高的评价。我也很享受与人合作的过程，我学习到的理念和技能，收获到欢笑和感悟常常大于作品本身。

That it is ecological design focused. The main theme of my portfolio is to design with nature, and I showcase how to apply, analyze, and design with the support of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) through several GIS-based projects. For example, in my award-winning research project, Making the Invisible Visible, Transformations on the Elwha River after Dam Removal, I presented a framework of how to collect, manage, analyze, present, and use data to design visitor interpretive routes in a river restoration project. In addition, I shared planting design through some of BASE’s local projects.

I think viewers are also interested in my portfolio’s diversity. I selected the most important projects at different stages of my life, and they present different aspects of me as a designer, including design works at different scales, planning and analysis, public participation, research, field work, and so on.

My portfolio also demonstrates cooperation. Most of the projects in my portfolio are group work, and they all received high recognition. Some are award-winning. I really enjoy cooperating with others. The skills and knowledge that I learn, and the laughter and reflection, are often even greater than the work itself.

“自由的空间”（可侵蚀廊道、流动领地、河道迁移带）是一种为河流留出空间，倡导河流“自我恢复”的河流修复策略，河流借助此空间恢复动态演变过程，逐步形成复杂的形态，为本地物种创造复杂多样的栖息地。然而，大多数此类河流修复项目只关注生态效益；给河流留出的空间时常被定义为“地质灾害”区域，虽禁止了人们在河流高速流动、侵蚀和沉积的区域进行开发，其定义却进一步恶化了人们对河流动态演变过程的认识。

The Espace de Liberté (erodible corridor, fluvial territory, channel migration zone) is an approach that facilitates “self-restoration” by creating a corridor for the river to resume its dynamic fluvial processes that provide complex and diverse habitats needed by native species. However, most Espace de Liberté projects only address ecological benefits. What is worse, the room for rivers is often defined as a “geo-hazard” area, which only focuses on prohibiting development in the zones that experience high velocity flows, erosion, and deposition, further worsening people’s perception of dynamic river processes.

On the contrary, the restoration of the River Aire near Geneva, Switzerland, celebrates the natural river process and exhibits the educational potential of Espace de Liberté projects. It shows the public river channel migration by harnessing lozenge islands in the river bed as the indicator of transformations, while also creating public access and engagement by turning the existing canal into a rivergarden. This thesis aims to learn from the design process of River Aire and relevant ecological design theories, to structure a framework for other Espace de Liberté projects.

I selected the Elwha River in Olympic National Park, Washington, which has experienced dynamic changes following the removal of dams in 2011. Building on the result of interviews and geospatial analysis, I tested where and how minimal design interventions can help people to understand, engage, and appreciate river natural processes and changes within its context without interfering with recovering processes. In addition, I challenged the traditional way of representing rivers and explored how to use remote sensing to represent river dynamics over time.

旧金山日本城的重新构想

Re-imagine San Francisco’s Japantown, CA

在了解了旧金山市日本城的历史后，我们被美籍日裔、非裔曾被排斥隔离的历史所震惊，即使在今日，八车道的吉里大道依旧是社区之间的物理屏障。为了直面这段历史并展望未来，我们提出的设计旨在打破边界，将日本城融入整个城市的景观。

After exploring the history of the Japantown, our team were struck by the suppressed stories of Japanese exclusion from the landscape of San Francisco, as well as the segregation of African Americans. The eight-lane Geary Boulevard, stands out as a physical barrier between communities even today. With the desire to acknowledge the past and re-imagine the future, our proposal aims to open and connect Japantown to the larger urban context.

Inspired by the Sansui concept, of mountains and water interacting without borders, our redesign seeks to do the same. We unfolded and extended the landscape three-dimensionally to explore possibilities of connecting Japantown to its surroundings, as well as connecting the north-south corridor by tunneling the car traffic of Geary Boulevard and establishing an uninterrupted, seamless parkway axis with the Peace Pagoda. Future growth will be accommodated through new mixed-use development buildings with the park at the core. Our re-vision to Japantown is to include a unified open space with iconic new architecture, that reflects on the past while embracing the diversity and interconnectedness of a contemporary San Francisco.

Mitchell Park Place is a new mixed-use development that will contribute to the vibrant neighborhood around Mitchell Park with a new office space for public social services as well as high-quality affordable housing for lower-income households, including special needs housing for the intellectually and developmentally disabled (IDD) community.

Drawing on neighbors’ input at community meetings, the overall landscape design concept aims to accomplish the following: provide interesting and comfortable active- and passive-use outdoor spaces for the building residents; integrate stormwater management strategies as functioning and valuable components of the gardens; stylistically compliment the proposed apartment building; and blend with the surrounding landscape typology as a visual amenity to the neighborhood. The protected courtyard will offer ample seating area as an outdoor extension of the community room, accommodate raised vegetable beds for gardening by residents, and include a meditative sensory garden with a labyrinth. Plant species will be primarily California natives, as well as a combination of low-water use adapted plants that provide year-round interest.

We are working with the City of Berkeley on the renovation of the eastern portion of Ohlone Park in central Berkeley. The design concept revolves around highlighting and recognizing the importance of the mural painted by artist Jean LaMarr as the cultural heart of the park.

During the design programming phase, we have listened to the voices of local indigenous people and neighborhood community members and worked with Jean LaMarr to ensure that the renovation improvements honor the Ohlone and the beginnings of the park with its community-based origins in the 1970s. BASE’s design will implement Ms. LaMarr’s vision, which extends to a contemplative sitting area with salmon-themed seats and a traditional grinding rock. A garden with native plantings will be installed at the base of the mural, and a new walk will provide access for up-close mural viewing. The two existing children’s play areas will be completely renovated and will include a diversity of rustic nature play equipment for both younger and older children. We also heard from the community about their desire for an open activity area, so where the park joins the city, a welcoming corner entry that expands into a small plaza has been included.

The Dolores Street Pollinator Boulevard is a novel community-driven form of green infrastructure, and the site was conceived of as a potential pilot project for the myriad neglected sites in San Francisco and other cities that occur along transit routes and waterways. In San Francisco’s landmark Dolores Street, islands plagued with brown turf and invasive weeds are replaced with smart pollinator plantings that better reflect the colorful and diverse character of the neighborhood and respond to the ongoing water shortage in California. The Pollinator Boulevard was designed around 2016, and we are still maintaining the garden, studying plants, and hosting volunteer programs to spread the love and knowledge for pollinator garden.

三江源国家公园试点项目
Evaluation of Sanjiangyuan National Park Pilot

中国将在2030年建成以国家公园为主体的自然保护地体系。2019年，三江源国家公园管理局邀请保尔森基金会组织国际专家团队对三江源国家公园试点进行独立评估。三江源国家公园试点区是长江、黄河、澜沧江的发源地，三条江河养育了中国和亚洲的九亿多人。在保尔森基金会的组织和资助下，2019年5月下旬至6月初，加州大学伯克利分校的公园、公众与生物多样性研究所执行主任，前美国国家公园管理局局长乔纳斯·贾维斯率专家组成的评估团对中国十大国家公园试点之一的三江源国家公园进行了为期两周的考察评估，我是其中伯克利的代表之一。

China has announced to establish a complete national park system by 2030. 2019, Qinghai Provincial Government invited the Paulson Institute to conduct an independent evaluation of one of the 10 pilot national parks, Sanjiangyuan National Park Pilot, which contains the headwaters of three major rivers: the Yellow, the Yangtze and the Mekong, which serve at least 900 million people downstream. With funding and support from Paulson Institute, the University of California Institute for Parks, People and Biodiversity Executive Director and former US National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis to lead an interdisciplinary expert team to China, and I was one of the representatives from UC Berkeley. We spent two weeks in Beijing and Qinghai in early June 2019 to conduct the field visit and stakeholder consultations.
