The project is located on the second floor of the complex ‘1933’ for an online fashion studio. The building is one of the historic landmark in Shanghai, having a distinctive atmosphere of former slaughterhouse by massive concrete volume, a series of interlocking ramps, bridges and staircases around a central atrium.
The site is situated on the west side of the building, a simple symmetrical space measures 3.9m high, with two concrete umbrella columns aligned in middle. Sunlight piercing through the ornamental lattices in cement of the western windows, shadows are thrown and shifting gradually as the sun is setting, projecting the pattern of circles and squares. To celebrate this scene, we keep a void space along the central axe, and layout the functional part on the double floor of both sides.

The project is commissioned by young designers for online fashion brand, they requested open working area and storage and delivery area for online shopping. Therefore main working space is placed in the central void, at the same time keeping the possi-bility for other usages such as party or studio photo-shooting. A mezzanine is placed along the sidewalls, with the lower floor for storage and the upper one for meeting and rest.

One of the features of “1933” is its original cement surface, this rough effect is preserved for the ceiling, the umbrella columns as well as part of the walls, meanwhile, stainless steel are applied to main floor with the reflective texture also responding practical usage for delivery as well. Warm color on certain surface brings to the whole space more tenderness.
