The project is currently on track for LEED Platinum certification.

Sited strategically at a hinge between the campus and city, the Design Loft forms a new hub that forges connections between Kent State University and the recently revitalized downtown Kent. Ascending from Lincoln Street on the edge of the campus, the Design Loft creates an accessible route between the university located to the east of the building and the city to the west. The building section negotiates a 12-foot vertical grade change along a sloping site. A continuous gallery anchors the building’s main public level and opens up to the university’s new esplanade, a pedestrian walkway that establishes a connection between the university and the city as part of a joint redevelopment initiative.

A continuous, expansive studio loft forms the heart of the program. Designed to maximize flexibility, it will accommodate a growing program and evolve to meet the educational needs of the architecture and design fields. The studio spaces are supported by a 200-seat multi- purpose lecture hall, library, café, gallery, studio critique spaces, classrooms, offices, and fabrication labs. The tiered arrangement of studios informs the massing of the Design Loft, which bridges the institutional and residential scales of its neighbors. The north façade of the building features large glazed areas of curtain wall that bring northern light into the studio spaces and provide panoramic views toward the campus and city. An ascending sequence of bay windows accommodates lounge areas that cantilever over the esplanade. The library, located on the west edge of the building, looks toward the city.

A series of stairs activate both the north and south façades of the building and provide continuous circulation that connects all of the studios levels. The south-facing fire stair cantilevers from the face of the building, creating shade for perimeter glazing while providing expansive views of the campus. An extensive green roof and native site vegetation connect the Design Loft with the surrounding landscape – a park located beyond the Esplanade and a sculpture plaza to the east of the site. The sloped lawn extending from the west edge of the building allows students to congregate outside with a view towards downtown Kent. The color and texture of the iron-spot brick façade and custom brick fins, fired in a bee-hive kiln by the local Belden Brick Company, relate to the materials of the surrounding campus and town. The fins provide shading for windows on the south, east, and west façades.

Studios and Critique Space

The Design Loft combines previously separate programs at the Kent State College of Architecture and Environmental Design. The 650-seat design studio creates a new creative hub located within close proximity to research labs, classrooms, and offices. A series of critique rooms ascend at the south side of the studios, encouraging dialogue between beginning and advanced studios and across the design disciplines. Faculty and administration offices are located adjacent to the tiered studios, encouraging intimate dialogue between the students, faculty, and staff. Continuous sightlines throughout the studio unite spaces of creation and critique, encourage interdisciplinary discourse, and enhance the sense of peripheral vision for students and faculty.

The main public level opens up to the University’s esplanade and the adjacent downtown. The ascending sequence of ground floor spaces support a broad range of activities including a café, gallery, multi-purpose lecture room, classrooms, library, and related reading areas. A 70-seat café is located near the main entrance of the building, encouraging interaction with students and faculty from other disciplines and the local community. A wide, amphitheater-style stair adjacent to the cafe creates opportunities for spontaneous discussion and provides a link between the public space located on the ground floor and the ascending loft of studios. A gallery space located adjacent to the café hosts exhibitions of student and faculty work as well as special exhibits organized by the University. The library houses a large collection of books, journals, drawings, periodicals, and a dedicated materials library at the mezzanine level that overlooks the reading room. In addition to the lecture hall, three classrooms located on the ground floor support the core CAED lecture courses and are available for use by the entire University.

Fabrication Labs

A series of research and fabrication labs located throughout the building provide means to test materials and fabricate mockups at multiple scales. This includes a wood shop, metal shop, digital fabrication lab, light lab, wind tunnel, construction management, and edaphic labs. A spacious outdoor work area allows students to
complete full-scale mockups for testing and review. A variety of construction techniques employed throughout the building are made visible for discussion as teaching tools. A perimeter glazed mezzanine surrounding the machine room allows for views of all major systems.

Sustainable Features

As a beacon of sustainable design for both the university and the community, the Design Loft illustrates the key role of architecture and environmental design in envisioning a sustainable future. The LEED Platinum design presents an integrated approach to sustainability that maximizes passive opportunities and employs efficient systems that can be improved even further in the future.

The north-facing studios maximize daylight opportunities and minimize the need for artificial light during the day with an automated daylight harvesting system. A ground source heat exchange well field, consisting of 130, 400-foot-deep wells, improves the mechanical system’s efficiency up to 45% above the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ baseline. A radiant floor heating system is used at the perimeter of the building to more efficiently distribute and regulate the temperatures of the various spaces. The radiant floor system allows the concrete structure to retain heat during winter months. High efficiency plumbing fixtures as well as a storm water capture and reuse system allow the building to minimize the use of potable water.

A dashboard readout of the building systems will provide real-time information on efficiency and energy use. A digital signage program will highlight sustainable features throughout the project. The building features regional, recycled, and low-emitting materials as well as sustainable construction and maintenance strategies. Reconstituted wood veneers are used in lieu of traditional wood veneers and all wood products are FSC certified. The exterior wall strategically deploys super insulated opaque wall panels and roofing, high-efficiency glazing, operable glazing units, and exterior fin shading devices to maximize user comfort and minimize energy costs throughout the building. Operable windows allow for local temperature control and cross ventilation.
