Appreciation towards Robot 3 Studio for providing the following description:

白塔寺老街区看似衰落，其实生机勃勃。在白塔寺近800年的历史中，住户从未停止对院落的更新。当下政府和社会资本也介入其中。参与者的初心无论情怀还是利益，如水顺流而下，事物终究走它本来的道路。更新，再生，或是衰败，都是老街区的宿命。

一直以来院落改造或汲取西方理念或固守中国传统，止于形巧，全无心神。中国传统居住精神被西方现代建筑理念瓦解打散。四合院是中国人伦观念和居住精神的体现。在西方影响下，中国的人伦观念在发生变化，但四合院所蕴藏的东方居住理想却历久弥新。

四合院绝非符号和盆景，更不是博物馆玻璃罩中的藏品。她应回到人们的现实生活，随时代一起自然流变，因此我们建造了一个属于当下的北京小院儿。

The old quarter of the White Pagoda Temple, seemingly declined, is full of vitality. In the nearly 800 years of history, the residents of the White Pagoda Temple have never stopped renovating the courtyard. Also, the current government and social capital are involved. The original aspiration of the participants, is the feelings or interests. Everything is eventually goes the way it should be, just like water floating down. The fate of the old quarter is update, regeneration or decline.

The courtyard has been transformed by learning from the western philosophy or sticking to the traditional Chinese tradition. The shape has been changed but without the mind. The traditional spirit of residence is disintegrated by the modern western concept of architecture. The Quadrangle is the embodiment of Chinese ethics and residential spirit. Under the influence of western concept, China’s ethical attitude is changing, while the oriental dwelling ideal behind the Quadrangle will remain fresh.

The Quadrangle is anything but symbol, bonsai or the collection under the Museum’s glass enclosure. She should return to real life and vary followed with the times. Therefore, we build a small Beijing courtyard belonging to the present.
