MAD no doubt is one of the most recognized architectural practices in China and worldwide. Every year, MAD receives countless job and internship applications. To be able to work at MAD will definitely enrich your career as even though the people working here might have been lucky, but are undeniably outstanding. What could possibly be on the minds of the MAD interns?

Who is your favourite architect? Why?

Kazuyo Sejima. I think she is such kind of person who doing design works with a very steady progress. From the plan layout, the form and scale of furniture, to the construction method, all are very precise and developed their own system. Every part of her design is with beauty.

Preston Scott Cohen. His geometric logic using in architecture design makes me feel amazing. He provides a method to perfectly build complex geometry in reality.

What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?

“Education is to meet the market.” My school well versed a truth – the market demanding of drawing workers is much bigger than designers. So the employment rate in our school is always good. Good CAD drawing will bring you a high academic score, while scripting or concept design may cause fail. Fortunately, I have well graduated now.

What have you gained during the MAD internship?

Gain the ability to meet the deadline. In school, you can easily delay submission, but it would never happen in doing real project.

What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Any suggestion?

Many Chinese architects emphasize that we should create our design and inherit Chinese culture. However, is it Chinese design when simply put Chinese classic cultural symbol in it? I think it is rather a plagiarizing from the ancients. I think contemporary architect should think about how to create their own time symbols. Why should we take things from other age? Although the latter-day architecture of Japanese, from the formal point of view, is very different from their ancient wooden architecture, they are very Japanese style. So, I think the most important thing is that we should focus on the contemporary. Thinking precisely what is the demand of THIS time and THIS place. Like Beijing in 2011, what is the urban texture look like? What would be the architectural form that it need? Finally, your design will become history, and the descendant will say ‘Look! This is the architecture in China 2011 A.D.’

What is your dream?

Visit new places. Meet new friends.

What would you do if you were not an architect?

Not sure.

What is your dream project? Any project that being built in real.

What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?

I always focus on design ideology and logic, thinking that design must have content. However, I ignore the geometry controlling which is very important part of design. So, none of them meet my satisfaction, although I love them all.

Preston Scott Cohen.

Background:
Public spaces were often an afterthought and as such they have turned into random islands between highways and left-over ground level plots scattered between tower developments: the public space does NOT actually serve the public.

Solution:
To transform flat and scattered urban form into vertical associated spaces. Accordingly, build inseparable connection between different parts of the city. Maximize the service efficiency of city public spaces. Ultimately, encourage the mutual movements and dynamic negotiations between different social groups, communities, and classes.

FACT 1 :
No matter you believe or not, many of us live in a completely “dark” world. You drop into office before sunrise, you get home after sunset. You don`t even get a chance to say hello to the sun. But why you don`t ever recognize it? You work and live in a 24hs shining place and over rely on the artificial light.

FACT 2 :
Once there is a building, there is shadow.

We want buildings to create light to the environment. The idea of this project is to create an attached building stands in side of another one (host building), providing a light environment instead of shadow around and so gives people a chance to enjoy nature light. Moreover, the structures of the attached building can also help to light up the inside space of itself.

Over past 100 years, human activities caused great changes of landscape features. In order to build cities, we dig digging. If this situation continues for several hundred years, the Earth’s surface will become more and more flat and boring. At present, however, people do not realize the losing of beautiful landscape topography.

This project aims to investigate geometrical combination between building and the topography, the final result of the building contains information of the original topography as to retain this potential natural heritage, while minimizing changes in the terrain.
