Backtracking

我出生在西北城市兰州，这其实是一个充满外来知识移民糅合在本地粗放地域的奇怪城市，我们的同学远远没有东部省份的学生那么热爱学习，所以甘肃的高考分数一直保持全国倒数，但是大家又格外爱好文艺，这块土地尽出些民谣歌手。我也不例外，在上大学选择志愿的时候，刻意避开了理工科专业，总感觉这条生活轨迹的未来似乎是可以预见的，而建筑学这个专业可以成天画画，在我看来，这是违背父母意愿，偷偷摸摸向“艺术家”转型的一个契机。

上学期间我也花了很多时间去学习素描水彩，临摹了不少画作，更多的兴趣在画画上，至于建筑还是设计并没有太在意，这种“前途未卜”的状态倒是很让人兴奋。

从北京到上海
From Beijing to Shanghai

北京和上海是两个完全不一样的城市。北京和周边城市的发展非常不均衡，人才和资源集中度非常高，人才梯队和领域划分已经非常清晰了，可以施展的设计类型非常有限。但上海和周边城市是一种前后台的关系，发展是均衡的，很多后台产业都在周边，我们的工作可以延伸到这些地方，机会也相对多一点。

创业的契机和公司发展
How did you start your own enterprise?

建筑学虽然是个舶来品，但作为一个本科毕业就完全投入实践的建筑师来说，大规模的城市建设让西方建筑的既有内容对我们的影响只能到操作层面上，无法影响价值观，更难以触及社会产业的变化。另一方面，80以后的建筑师，基本不会对现代主义在中国的缺失抱有任何的遗憾，同时，又成长在社会的经济和文化复兴的档口，可以更加自信和轻松的搭建独立的世界观。所以我觉得这是一个集体的觉醒，我也是在这样一个“美好时代”开始做公司，我不希望公司最后的设定是成为美学或者感官输出的一个出口，只是去告诉别人什么是更好的，我更需要能够同步一些产业的更迭，这种感觉会更真实一点。

I am fully engaged in the practice of China’s large-scale urban construction since my graduation. In the case，modern architecture as an exotic from the western world feels hard to make both sense of worth values and changing of social development in Chinese context. The existing content of architecture from western culture may only stay in the form of representation in a Chinese world.

On the other hand，architects after the 80s will basically not have any regrets about the lack of modernism in China. 80s generation grows up in an awakening world of Chinese culture and economic. The situation makes me feel easier and more confident to develop my own world view, and I set up my company in such a “good times” as well. I do not hope my company as just being a simple export of aesthetics or senses, and I want more to tell people what is better. Meanwhile, I have to synchronize architecture related industries ,which has a true-feeling to me.

做公司是个非常非常困难的事情，不过对未来的态度确实无比的乐观。到目前为止，我们一直维持在15到20人之间的公司规模。我们其实还是比较传统的类似作坊制的工作方式，无论是工作方法，使用的软件，还是工作的流程，没有任何特别之处。我现在主持上海办公室的工作，我的合伙人余江帆在负责深圳办公室的工作。

Running a company is definitely a difficult thing to do ;however, I am truly optimistic for the future.We have been maintaining a company size of between 15 and 20 people until now. Actually, we remain a relatively traditional working style, just like a workshop. I am currently presiding architecture studio in Shanghai and my partner Jiangfan Yu is in charge of architecture studio in Shenzhen.

对项目的选择
How do you choose your projects?

在我看来项目不是一个大和小的问题。首先，我并不想通过设计过份表达个人化的情感或诉求。比起个体的使用者，我对一个建筑去影响一个集体的生活状态这个事更感兴趣，我们做设计的核心是希望做出来的类型能够影响更多人，让更多人获得愉悦。受众人群越多会让我们觉得工作的意义更大。这个立场会一直坚持下去，相应的也需要去做一些规模性的项目来实现。

I don’t want to over-express personal emotions or appeals through the design. Compared to individual users, I am more interested in considering how to influence a collective lifestyle through the architecture. The core idea of the design is to affect more people, as well as bring more joy to them. The more our users are, the bigger significance will our projects achieve. We will insist this philosophy, which correspondingly requires us to do some projects at large scales.

用项目干预人的集体生活
Make changes in collective life by projects

“设计最终的目的是干预人的集体生活，促进人和人，人和环境的亲密关系。”

“The destination of design is to intervene the collective life, promoting the intimate relationship between people and people, as well as people and the environment.”

“我们不是想实现设计师过于个人化的诉求，也不急于表达与众不同的设计观念……我们的工作是提供一种可能，这种可能就像开源代码一样……让使用这房子的集体获得极大的愉悦。”

“Neither of these projects is intended to achieve architects’ overly personal appeal, nor to express the unique design concept. What we do is to provide a possibility which may be similar to the open source code that people can use to write a new program.”

在巨变的中国城市中找到自己的发展步调
How did you find your own pace in the rapidly changing cities of China?

我们需要在这种环境下倒逼自己去更加认识自己感兴趣的方向，构建独立的世界观。其实脱离开这个时代，有很多的空间类型已经让我着迷不已，就好比沧浪亭的翠玲珑，难以释怀，它是我心中东方的巴塞罗那馆，我们做的大部分项目在空间操作上都跟它有渊源。虽然翠玲珑只是一个不到一百平米的小构筑物，可能连基本的功能都不具备，但是它具备了一种空间特质，在我看来几乎是我心目中最终极的空间原型。它提供了空间的透明关系，以及人的声音，光线的体验，而且这些体验完全不依赖物质，不依靠材料。它就像一个源源不断的反应堆，辐射我们所有的项目。当然，翠玲珑也只是众多具有东方情结的空间类型中的一类而已，我们也会在它的基础上拓展和发现更多的原型。现代主义很多建筑师过强的物质崇拜和我们要实现的目的完全不一样。对于这种东方空间的追寻和表达，其实是我们工作的精神指导。

Actually, separated from the era, there are many types of space that have fascinated me a lot. Taking the Bamboo Pavilion in the Pavilion of Surging Waves as an example, I can say that I am really crazy about it. In my mind, it is another Barcelona Pavilion in the East. Furthermore, most of spatial designs in our projects are inspired by this pavilion. Although the Bamboo Pavilion is just a small structure of less than 100 square meters, to some degree which may not be equipped with basic functions, it definitely qualifies a space feature, which can serve as the most space prototype. It provides a transparent space relationship, human voices and the experience of the light, which don’t rely on the substances or materials. It is like a never-ending reactor that radiates all of our projects. Definitely, the Bamboo Pavilion is just one type of many oriental spaces, yet we will expand and discover more prototypes based on it. It is this kind of way to pursue and express oriental space that instructs our design.

项目的特色和优势
What is the feature of your projects?

与其说是优势，不如说是兴趣点，我们会在对广泛传统类型的研究基础上，找到一种翻译的可能。传统空间里的透明关系，无论是现象的透明关系，还是物理的透明关系，都会在我们心间的符合时代需求的项目中感受到。这是我们跟单纯强调物质感的项目相比最大的优势。最终的目的还是干预人的集体生活，促进人和人，人和环境的亲密关系。

很多空间实际上在行走过程中才会感受到其变化。我们在苏州小学项目（合作：致正建筑）里做了很多退台，它们面对的其实是一片自然的原生山体，但从项目图纸中你是阅读不出这些信息的。只有在上上下下错错落落的体验当中，你才会发现自己原来能和自然有这么多可能的和有意思的关系。

We will find a potential translation upon the research and study on a wide range of traditional space types. The destination of this translation is to intervene the collective life, promoting the intimate relationship between people and people, as well as people and the environment.

In fact, we can only feel the spatial changes when we walk through the space. We have done a lot of retreating terraces that actually faces up to the mountains in a natural condition in the project of the Suzhou Technology City Elementary School, which, however, can’t be read from the drawings. Only when experiencing these ups and downs in person, will you find that you can have such an interesting and potential relationship with the nature.

同样在海豚湾街区项目里，我们做了很多小尺度的变化空间，这些空间是我们从上海小尺度的城市街区中走街串巷提取出来，然后翻译到这个项目里的。现在的城市规划很难找到类似上海新天地、田子坊、思南公馆这样前工业时代遗留的尺度亲近的街区。我们提取出这些和人的尺度更相关的空间，运用在自己的设计中，希望保留这种亲密的城市关系。

Similarly, in the project of the Dolphin Bay District, we have done a lot of changing spaces in small scales that are extracted and translated from the urban blocks at such scales. In today’s urban planning, there are few neighborhoods such as the New World of Shanghai, the TianZiFang and the Sinan Mansions, which are scaled-friendly and left by former industrial eras. We extract such spaces that are more related to people’s scale, applying them to our own design to keep an intimate urban relationship.

我们还在南昌做了一个办公会所，这个项目最初只是要为社区提供一个会议中心和一些云办公区域。但是我们发现由于这个项目远离城市中心，从周边来这里工作和生活的年轻人们还没有培养起来社区精神。我们希望这个房子除了既定的功能，还可以提供更多可能，促使年轻人围绕它展开一些活动。最后我们把整个建筑的地面、楼面和屋面串联起来，这样除了使用这个房子的人，其他人也可以沿着房子爬到屋顶上去。项目屋顶上设有一个羽毛球场和一个农田。我们只是提供了一个可以种植的屋面，周边生活的人就自己在上面种了些玉米。在这个空间中，人们会在上下楼的路途中邂逅，会相约去屋面上打羽毛球；这些路径又跟周边的功能串联在一起，人们可以爬过屋面，绕到商业街去。我们作为设计师给附加给房子的额外功能，实际上是它最有价值的地方。我们希望排除个人的情感和诉求，放下身段，用更多的方式让使用者获得愉悦。

We have also done an office club in Nanchang, which is originally intended to provide the community with a conference center and some Cloud Offices areas. However, the site is located far from the city center, contributing to a lack of community spirit here. Thus, in addition to its intended functions, we expected this building could offer the young people who worked and lived in the surrounding areas more possibilities to carry out activities around it. Finally, we combined the ground system, the floor system and the roof system of this building in series, providing all people with the accessibility to the roof. On the roof, there were a badminton court and a farmland. What we provided was just a planted roof, where people who lived in the neighborhood planted some corns. In this office club, people will encounter others when they go upstairs and downstairs, also will meet on the roof for a badminton game; besides, these paths are connected in series with the surroundings, which means people can walk across the roof and go to the commercial blocks. These extra functions that we, as designers, added to the project are exactly the most valuable space within the whole project. We expect that we can modestly find more ways to bring more happiness to our users without any our own emotions or appeals.

苏州小学项目也有很多功能。我们在设计中做了一个比较集中的中庭，里面设置了一个剧场空间。我从校长的朋友圈里发现，他特别喜欢转发学生在剧场中表演的照片。我们提供了一些可能，留给老师和学生自己发挥。在室外，我们建造了可以跟景观发生关系的平台，老师把它做成了可以种植的农场。上自然课的时候，老师就会带着学生到平台上观察植物的生长，定期采集一些蔬菜，等等。不仅如此，这个项目还激发了很多老师的审美欲。我们经常可以在学校的公众号上看到老师在不同时段不同角度拍摄的校园照片，甚至还举办了一些摄影比赛。这就是设计衍生出来的额外价值。你在上面投入的心思，花费的精力，带来的是其他人对生活空间的认可，以及激发她们对于空间审美的想象。

The Suzhou Technology City Elementary School also has many programs. In the project, we designed a theater in a relatively concentrated atrium. From the headmaster’s Moments, I found that he liked to forward photos of students performing in the theater. Thus, we put forward some potential ideas, leaving the space for teachers and students. In the exterior space, we built up a terrace corresponding to the landscape, which afterward became a planted farmland inspired by teachers. When attending the natural class, teachers would lead students to this platform to observe the growth of the plants, collect some vegetables regularly, etc. In addition, this project aroused many teachers’ aesthetic desires. The school official account often post photos of the school photographed by teachers at different times, from different angles, even once held some photography competitions. This is the extra value derived from the design – the space made by your thoughts and energy will win people’s recognition toward the living space, as well as arouse their imagination toward the space aesthetics.

这些项目并不是想实现设计师过于个人化的诉求，也不急于表达与众不同的设计观念。我们的工作是提供一种可能，这种可能就像开源代码一样，使用者拿到之后，可以自己编写出新的程序。能让使用这房子的集体获得极大的愉悦，这算是一个优势吧。

Neither of these projects is intended to achieve architects’ overly personal appeal, nor to express the unique design concept. What we do is to provide a possibility which may be similar to the open source code that people can use to write a new program. I think it can be an advantage if a building can bring its users much joy.

对大规模项目的控制
How did you control the large-scaled projects?

控制其实是一个非常严肃的话题。这之前的确需要经过一个阶段的训练，这还要感谢我的第一份工作，在直向董功老师那里，受益匪浅，帮助我建立一个清晰的工作流程，当然，执行起来很痛苦。我们从设计到施工的每个步骤推进的时候，往往会把最原初的观念，最早的图解，最老的模型，和现阶段的发展并置起来，然后去判断，哪个选项最符合最初的判断。这是一个纠结反复的过程，其中探讨的工作量可能要远超普通的项目设计。

During every stage of our design and construction, we tend to juxtapose the most original concepts, the earliest diagrams and the oldest models with the current phase, making it more accurate to decide the option that fits the initial ideas best. It is a repeated process where the amount of the exploration work may be much bigger than ordinary projects.

好比在海豚湾项目里，我们最开始希望提供一个非常灵活的街区，它有一些漂浮的体量，产生一种游离的关系。最后我们得到了一张图，图中有一个黑色的底座，上面有些白盒子在游离。但是这只是一个通过漂浮的黑和白界定的图像，当项目落实到工程中时，所有的界面都要被物质化。从材料角度讲，我们用黑色的石材做下面的盒子，用透光的玻璃做上面白色的部分。为了实现漂浮的效果，我们在节点上把两个体量脱开，中间加一圈照明，这种游离关系就通过照明体现了出来。非常简单的设计逻辑，但需要不偏不倚的执行下去。这是一个从很抽象的从图像落实到具体的材料和构造的过程，我们每走几步就要回头看看，确认自己没有偏离初心，这期间伴随这大量的墙身材料过程研究。

对教育建筑的理解
What is your understanding of educational architecture?

我觉得学校设计可能是所有公共设计里受资本和政治干预最少的，建筑师可以在其中充分的实现自己理想化的空间，以及通过空间去干预他人行为的企图。我们做的所有类型的项目里面，学校项目的甲方对于设计的干预程度是最低的，这也是我们很感兴趣的一个地方。回到我们的最开始的设计理念，我们并不是在强调个人情感或个人情绪在公共空间中的表达，我们更多的是想通过对于集体人群行为的引导，让更多人获得愉悦。学校是我们最有力，最充分表达设计理念的不二之选。

教育建筑的责任
What do you think is the responsibility of educational architecture?

一个孩子会在学校这一建筑空间中待长达十二年之久，他所有成长的记忆，都会跟他在这个空间中的行为发生紧密的关系。首先，在幼儿园小学阶段，是一个孩子模仿力最强的阶段，这个时间对一个人行为习惯的养成至关重要，到了中学，则是一个人最重要的人格养成阶段，这是时间获得的认可和鼓励会伴随一生，反过来说，受到的伤害则是难以抚平的。中国正在步入老龄化社会，少子化是不可避免的危机！这更需要保证每个个体的成长质量。学校的软件建设交给了老师，硬件则是我们的责任。

激发兴趣
Stimulating the Interest

我们设计的学校空间，从来不会去强调过分清晰的秩序，同时又尽量多的提供游戏活动空间。在苏州实验小学的项目中，我们设计了一个从教室到室外平台，再到看到自然山体的体验，这个体验过程并不是非常直白，而是有收有放变化丰富的，鼓励探索的过程。

The school space we designed never puts too much emphasis on the clear order, yet meanwhile, provides game space as much as possible. In the project of Suzhou Experimental Elementary School, We designed a platform extending from the classroom to the outdoor space, creating an experience of seeing the natural mountains. This experience is not very straightforward, but flexible and changeful, encouraging an exploration process.

促进交流
Promoting the Communication

学校的组织性交流可以通过固化的教室实现，诱发性的交流则需要看似不经意的流线组织来实现，我们的设计中，有意的去设计上下垂直不对位的情况，或者把表演空间安排在必经路径上。这些领域可以留给老师和学生门自由组织发挥，同时也能让在不同高程，或者之前并未打算参与的学生感知到甚至直接加入进来。

The organizational communication of the school can be realized trough the solidified classrooms, yet the induced communication needs to be realized by the seemingly inadvertent circulation, which drive our projects to design some vertical misalignments or organize the performance space on the only route. These spaces can be left to teachers and students to organize freely, as well as push those students at different levels or who are not interested in initially to feel, or even join the project directly.

提高竞争
Improving the Competition

下一代人在从小的饮食结构中摄取大量的高能蛋白，而且活动技能也无限加强，这是我看到的和我们这一代人最大的不同。所以我们的学校设计中有意的弱化场地领域感。用一个平台把所有的功能用房串联起来，让教育用房和活动场地自然过渡。

同时高差变成了看台，场地和建筑的关系更加有机。走出教室的孩子可以直奔操场，看台的围合又在鼓励竞技。这种平台化的操作不论南方北方，学校规模大些我们都是这样操作。

The younger generation has taken a great deal of high-efficiency protein from a very early age and their activity skills have been infinitely enhanced at the same time, which are the biggest difference I have seen fromß our own generation. Thus, our school design intentionally weakens the sense of the field. Instead, we use a platform to connect all function rooms in series, allowing the natural transition from the educational space to the activity space.

Meanwhile, the elevations become stands, creating a more organic relationship between the site and the building. Students getting out of the classroom can go straight to the playground, while the enclosed stands encourage competitions. Consequently, we apply this design concept of the platform into the larger-scale school projects, no matter where they are located.

对城市的理想
Ideal of the City

我心中的理想城市，跟现在城市规划里强调的小街区观念是一致的。我希望我们的生活越来越碎片化，它能包容更多样的人群。从交通上来说，因为路网密集，减轻整个城市的交通压力。从生活上来说，低层高密度的城市能带来城市空间和街道景观的丰富变化，满足不同人群的空间诉求。我去过的城市中，布拉格和中国所有原生古镇都是比较理想的城市原型。它们的街道网非常碎片化，且都指向公共空间。在行走的过程中，你会感受到空间节奏的变化；公共空间和私密空间的过度非常丰富，可以穿过庭院，与人邂逅。

未来展望
View for the Future

希望挑战的项目和公司未来计划

用地越复杂，约束条件越多，涉及的人群越多，这个项目的难度就越大，最后的设计结果就会影响更多人群。我们想做的就是这样的项目。我个人并不会对深山里、大海边这些唯美的环境那么着迷，我更希望我做的工作能够产生很强的现实意义，能够引导或者干预其他人群，让场所中发生一些新的事情。我们的工作大部分时间是在探索一种类型，去契合我们的初衷。我想做一些人流密集的项目。我说的人流密集是流线导致的，而不是因为去的人多。学校就是这样的项目之一，每天光一个校门就有上千人进出，你的一个很微观的设计行为，可能就会导致很多人人行为上的变化，这是我最感兴趣的地方。

我希望公司加强研究内容，尤其是对广泛城市空间，包括传统空间和现在城市空间的空间类型采集和延展。我们需要做海量的尝试，提取更有积极意义的类型，运用到实际的项目中去。如果这些类型没有被整理、翻译、转化出来，那么我们工作的意义是有限的，他只能停留在技术层面上。我希望我们的所有工作都具备现实意义，所以我也不排斥在更大的项目中去做这方面的实践。

作为新一代独立建筑师的心得体会

21世纪已经发生的最重要的事情是中国完成了工业化，这种生产力大爆炸的剧变对于我们社会关系的影响才刚刚开始，这种一步跨到后工业时代是没有先验可寻的。相对其他行业的快速的兴衰更迭，建筑学的反应显得异常迟钝。现代主义衍生的价值判断标准几乎没有变化，大部分设计依然依赖空间，材料的嫁接，最后的结果姿态上非常折衷，中国人看了好看，外国人也觉得好看的设计。独立姿态的建筑师和设计院体制的建筑师在成果上越来越趋同，似乎找到了非常“顺手”的办法。我希望同行们适当放弃充满“安全感”的设计，一起去建立对自己生活世界的认知，建立更独立的价值观，毕竟还有很多的时间犯错！这大概是你们这个专栏把年龄锁定在35岁以下的人的原因吧！
