在比利时，我成长的区域是一个很安全的区域，每家每户都有很大的花园，这给予了我在户外玩耍、创造的机会。我的小时候有很大一部分的时间都是在户外度过的。又过了一段时间，电脑和电子游戏变得流行了起来，我最欢的一个游戏是个建筑软件，我可以用这个软件去建3D模型（当然，在那个时候我并不知道那是个设计工具软件）。

当我在选择大学的专业时，我最开始想选择经济，因为我很肯定商科会让我未来拥有一份高收入工作，但是我最好的朋友跟我说我应该遵循我的内心而不是金钱，专注我的创造能力，所以我最终选择了建筑学专业并从第一天开始就爱上了它。

再后来，我想成为建筑设计师的想法变得更明确了，我热爱空间、形态和建筑是如何影响我们（空间使用者）及我们身边的环境。

As a kid growing up, I remember spending lots of time outside. In Belgium, where I am from, our villages are safe and every house has very big garden, so I had so much opportunities to explore and create things. Then, when computers and video games became popular, I spend some times playing games that involved city building and city managing. In fact, my favourite game was an architecture software that allowed me to build 3D architecture model (I just didn’t know it was a design tool at that time).

When I had to choose which university I would go, I was actually thinking on doing economics at first cause I was sure I could get a well paid job, but my best friend told me to not follow the money and rather keep on working on my creative side, so I went to architecture school and I enjoyed it on the first day.

Later on, my vision of becoming an architect strengthen and I became obsessed with spaces, volumes and how architecture affects ourselves and the environment.

From Europe to China

作为来自欧洲的建筑师，我被教会不断挑战自己的想法，尝试创新并牢记自己的独特性。欧洲就像是一个巨大的建筑图书馆，我来自比利时（欧洲的中心），我有很多外出考察的机会，我认为建筑或室内设计的能力并不是从书本上学来的，而是从实践、考察、探索中学来的。我想我的优势是可以从西方视角出发同时结合我这5年来对现代东方的理解来开展设计，即本土又国际。同时，每个项目对我来说都像是一个全新的开始，我对提供有价值的独特的设计充满热情，设计不仅只是个工作。

Althought it is changing very fast in China, I believe as being an architect from the Western Europe, I have been trained to challenge my ideas, seek for innovation and always remember that I am unique. Europe it is also a giant architecture library. Living in Belgium (being at the center of Europe) I had a chance to enlarge my architecture knowledges by traveling and studying abroad. You don’t study architecture in books, you study it by exploring. So, I guess my strengths are the ability to always look at a project like a new beginning and thrive of delivering unique solution thanks to the influences I received from the western and now eastern world.

欧洲的建筑设计事务所和中国的是非常不一样的，尤其对于年轻或是刚毕业的的设计师而言。例如，在比利时年轻建筑师需要迅速掌握所有专业技能的实践，两年后，很多建筑师可以操作从概念到落地工程的全流程。但是严格的规范有时也限制了一定的创造力。

在中国，年轻建筑师/设计师则从其他方面更占优势。生活在一个充满着发展、机会和巨大空间的国家，年轻的中国设计师们有一个巨大的“游乐场”，设计师们有大量的不同定位的设计所可以选择效力，从而体验不同体谅的项目设计经验和工作方法。不过我认为年轻设计师头几年很难在大型公司里迅速成长，因为他们经常都被委任于专职于做一个具体的工作，没有机会学习新的技能，管理项目，与顾客沟通等。一个建筑师不应只是一个设计师，也应该是一个项目中与各方协调的组织者。年轻设计师需要做更多的测试，探索，尽量的去“失败”（因为每一次失败之后都是宝贵的进步）。

Architectural practices in Europe is significantly different compare to Chinese practices. Especially for fresh graduates and young architects. For instance, young architects in Belgium will quickly learn all tasks and responsibilities that architects needs to undertake. After two years, many architects would be able to manage a project from conception to completion. However, the strict regulations and rules can sometimes be a limitation to their creativity.

In China, young architects benefit from other advantages. Living in a country with such growth, opportunities and land spaces, young Chinese architects can enjoy from a vast design playfield. Here, every designer can choose from a wide range of firms and therefore explore many differents ways and scales of design. However I still think young Chinese architects working in large firm are not given the chance to grow much in the first few years of their career. Here, young designers are often hired for small little tasks rather than giving them the chance to learn new skills, manage a construction site, hold a client meeting. An architect is not only a designer but also a coordinator between all participants in the project. Young Chinese architects needs to test, explore and fail as much as possible.

作为一个在中国工作的国外设计师，我也面临着许多挑战，我认为最显著的是两个难点，至今我还在为此不断努力着。第一点是有很多客户其实对创新的接受度还是比较有限的，但我觉得还是挺矛盾的，毕竟中国现在的科技发展是很出色的而这其中离不开创新。很多客户只愿相信他们看见过的东西而不敢“冒险”做不一样的尝试。第二点是思维模式，很多人仍认为越复杂的东西越好。我们不断地努力跟客户在不要过度装饰上进行沟通，只设计需要的、恰当的。不管是在建筑设计或是室内设计上，我相信“少即是多”，一个成功的设计应该是一个可以随时做减法的空间而不是一个你没办法再加任何东西的空间。

As a foreigner working in China, you face a lot of difficulties. In my opinion there are two majors difficulties that I am still struggling with to this day. The first is the fact that some clients are afraid of innovation, which is paradoxical when you look at Chinese technological development. Some clients believe in things they see and don’t necessary want to take too much risk. The second is the mindset. In Chinese cutlure, the more sophisicated you are the better. For most of our projects there is this constant argumentation between over-designing and designing just what is necessary. Being a “less is more” scholars make me believe in architecture and interior that express simplicity. A successful design project is the one you can’t remove anything and not the one you can’t add anything.

作为建筑系学生，我得到了一个前往武汉科技大学做交换生的机会，从那时起我对中国及其文化的兴趣及热爱开始不断地增加。在鲁汶大学获得了可持续建筑学的硕士学位后，我在巴黎工作了一段时间随后被调到其深圳的分公司工作，那是一家很大型的设计公司，但我很遗憾地发现他们的设计理念和方式并不是我所热爱的，所以在2015年底我和我的中国搭档一起创建了MAKADAM。

现在我们是一个6人小而精的团队，所有成员均来自世界顶级高校，充满才华，专业且负责任的设计师们。我们相信小的团队使我们更容易迸发出真正深刻的设计可能性，团队的合作模式甚至有点像设计学院课堂里的头脑风暴的交流状态。我相信，小而精是给顾客传递高度专业的定制式设计服务解决方案的最佳方式，只有在这种情况下我们才有办法深入真正了解顾客的诉求，研究它，理解它，从而进行创作。

如我前面所言，我们的设计团队有点像学校的课堂，允许并欢迎不同的想法、批判和讨论。我们的设计信仰建立于真正深入理解每个项目的项目地原生环境及项目的背景情况及真正诉求。从概念设计到深化落地，我们将对设计的创新、对品质和细节的追求与每个项目自身情况进行融合，再造。我们想做一个谦逊的设计工作室，从团队成员和每个项目、客户身上学习，设计的过程也就像是一个与他们的对话录。

As an architecture student, I had the chance to do an international exchange program at the University of Sciences and Technology in Wuhan. That’s where my interest for Chinese culture and architecture grew. After being graduated from the University of KULeuven with an International Master Degree in Architecture and Sustainability, I worked in Paris and then head to Shenzhen to work in bigger firms. Unfortunately, no many firms suited my interests as an architecture and so I founded MAKADAM at the end of 2015 with my Chinese partner.

Currently, our office consists of 6 people, all members are from top university all around the world. We believe in small team with talented designers to sort of re-create the design studio atmosphere we had at school. In my opinion, it is the best to keep the creativity high and deliver tailored made solutions for our clients.

As I said previously, we operate very much like a design studio class. Every design ideas, critics, discussions are welcomed. Our work is greatly inspired by the context we are in. Our vision and the practicality of our work is coming from a deep understanding of where the project sits. Each of our project are made with innovation, devotion of uniqueness and aspiration for quality and details. Our philosophy is to remain a very humble design firm with the interest to learn from each our team members and clients. We view the design process as a dialogue with them.

我们的大多数客户是私人客户，我们有丰富的设计项目类型，如零售、住宅、酒店和文化相关建筑等。我们主要提供室内设计、建筑改造设计和中小型的建筑设计项目。我们热衷且擅长处理民宿、精品酒店的设计及在中国乡下的学校改造设计。这种中小型体量的项目很容易被我们的团队消化，其外，这些项目中的社会、文化和可持续型的因素让整个设计变得更有趣更有意义。

Most of our clients are from the private sector. We have a wide range of projects from retail, to residential, hospitality and cultural. We mainly work on interior design, architecture renovation and small to medium scale architecture projects. Our preference is to tackled renovation and architecture projects such as guesthouses, boutique hotels, schools located in the Chinese countryside. These projects are big enough for our team to handle it first. Second, the social, cultural and sustainable challenges of these projects make the entire design game much more fun.

新乡土建筑
About Design

新乡土建筑尤其是中国的旧房改造是我们的核心兴趣，在过去几年里，我们已经看到了一个很有趣的转变，社会及人们对乡村的关注及保护。很多大城市过去常见的做法是推倒重建，但中国有着这么悠长的历史，保护过去留下的东西或将他们改造成新的，适应我们现代生活方式的形态是很有必要的。

MAKADAM有很多相关案例，比如在东莞一个村落里的旧民居改造成民宿，我们保留了整个旧房的结构，重新设计室内空间使其适用于新的功能，还设置出公共空间供本地的居民、老人休闲使用。又比如在深圳，我们将一个旧别墅改造成民宿，尊重保留其原有的老元素用设计轻触将其改造成符合现代生活方式的民宿空间。

New rural architecture and especially renovation design of old houses or buildings in China is at the center of our interest. We are seeing for few years already an interesting shift in Chinese people mindset and their carefulness of their village and environment. Most big cities and villages often opt for the “tabula rasa” approach. However, China has the longest history in the world. It is necessary to prevent the destruction of the past and rather transform these architectures with a delicate approach into comfortable places fitting our current lifestyle.

With MAKADAM Design Studio , we transformed an old traditional house into a guesthouse with common space for the villagers near the city of Dongguan. We kept the entire old structure of the house and re-design the interior spaces to fit the current needs. We also offer interior spaces for eldery people to use as entertaining space, organize gathering and other collective activities they usually do in the village.

We also transformed a villa in Shenzhen into a guesthouse. This villa looked less traditional but the challenge remain the same. The importance is too keep the soul of these buildings by respecting what is already there and slighty adapting the design to our current way of living.

Educational space

大米和小米教育中心委托我们设计其在北京的旗舰店，这个设计也将会被运用到他们未来在全国各地的分店中。我们在开始设计前进行了一轮深入的调研，调查了解自闭症儿童的各方面信息，他们的行为特点、社交困扰、移动能力、敏感的情绪和对特定颜色或图形的反应。我们多次前往深圳大米小米教育中心现场，观察现教育中心的空间弊端。在做了调研后开展了具有策略性的设计手法，除了把所有需要的功能进行升级规划外，细节如空间内没有一处尖角造型，统一均为圆角以保障孩子们的安全性。还有空间中心的木质结构展开提供导向指引，便于消毒清洁的地面设计，自然不被抗拒，不容易分散孩子注意力的色彩搭配等。

When we were commissioned to design the new flagship education center of Dami & Xiaomi in Beijing, we first dived deep on researching about the behavioral and social issues of these children. Their mobility, their sensitive emotions to certain color or images and their difficulties of focusing on their tasks attracted our attention. We had to find design strategies such as rounded corner for safety reason, creating a Centrale wooden area to facilitate orientation and gather all circulations as well as neutral color interior to avoid any distraction.

Other design projects

我们现在正在做一个韶关的康养度假村的项目，该地块位于两座小山丘之间伴有河流自然水系及稻田。目前，我们正在进行几个方面的工作，如跟当地农民及相关部门研讨关于当地文化及自然资源的运用及可能性。同时，我们也正在展开本项目的建筑规划设计。该项目将包含spa疗养中心，餐饮板块，精品酒店民宿板块和养老中心等。我们希望本项目可以与周边的自然环境有很强的融合。此外，我们还与生物和农业专家们进行就如何在环境保护层面开展可持续的设计。

Our latest ongoing project is the urban and architecture development of a wellness resort near Shaoguan city, in the north of Guangdong province. The land sits between small hills and includes a river along which farmland and rice fields. Currently, we are operating on multiple aspects. On one part, we are discussing with villagers and government officials to learn from the culture and resources. We are also developing a first draft of our urban concept idea combining new architecture buildings and renovation of some existing ones. The idea is to develop a wellness resort with all facilities (spa, restaurants, tea center, hotels, eldery center) and strongly connect the project to the surrounding nature. Finally, we are also discussing with biological engineers and environmental protectionists to offer a sustainable design solution with lower footprints yet high-end quality results.

学术交流
Academical research

作为鲁汶大学的特邀组织员，我负责开发一个促进比利时和中国的建筑设计学术交流的项目。在两者之间相当于一个桥梁的作用，如最近的一次是在2019年9月，我为鲁汶大学建筑系学生组织了一次到访深圳，围绕城中村展开的一次学术考察及与同济大学的互动调研活动。我们会不断鼓励各种调研，鼓励“对话”。在不远的未来，我们想为两所大学创造更多的交流机会，鼓励学生参与志愿交换项目。

As a coordinator of the University of KULeuven, I am responsible of developing a hub between Belgium and China to foster relationships and academical researches. I am the bridge between the two faculties. Recently, I have orgnanized a workshop in Shenzhen around the topic of the regeneration of urban villages. We will continue pushing these researches much further to encourage debates. Also, in the near future, we would like to create strong collaboration between the two univeristies and allow students to enroll for valuable exchange programs on both side of the world.

未来目标
Future expectation

现在MAKADAM做的大多都是中小型体量的项目，我们想继续在这条路上前行，我们希望有机会创造越来越多有意思的项目。同时，我们在布鲁塞尔（比利时）也有越来越多的项目即将开展，在不远的未来，我们希望我们在两地的发展可以产生更多有益互助的成果，从东西方两面互相滋养，成长。

So far, MAKADAM have done relatively small and medium size projects. We want to keep doing such projects and continue working with private client or group of client. We hope to create more and more interesting design projects. Currently, we are also having more projects in Brussels (Belgium). In the near future, we wish to develop a cross-border design studio that could benefit from both side of the world. Learning from the West for the East and learning from the East for the West.
