笙白艺术空间的场地最初为北京东四环附近的一处锅炉房，后来几经易手，在这次改造前，被用作了一个汽车修理厂。

Shengbai Art Space, located near the East 4th Ring Road in Beijing, was originally a boiler station. After several program changes, it was later utilized as an auto repair shop before its current renovation.

这片区域周围是上世纪八九十年代的社区，这块场地长约160米，宽度只有20米，是城市化进程中一块狭窄的被遗忘的边角余料。那么，如何通过针灸式的更新，在这城市的夹缝中引入新的公共活动，带来社区以外的人流，是激活整块老旧城区的关键所在。

Situated in a residential district constructed in the 1980s and 1990s, the site measures approximately 160 meters in length and only 20 meters in width. It was a forgotten and narrow corner amidst China’s rapid urbanization process. Our aim was to revitalize the community by introducing new public activities and attracting visitors from across the city to this urban gap.

为此，我们拆除了汽修厂部分加建，恢复了锅炉房本来的空间结构，将西侧的开敞空间改造为承载展览、商务活动和小型婚礼的礼堂，将其他跨度较小的空间改造为咖啡厅、偏厅等配套功能。

To achieve this, we demolished a portion of the auto repair shop’s extension, restored the boiler station’s original spatial structure, and transformed the west side’s open space into a hall capable of hosting exhibitions, business activities, and wedding events. We also converted smaller spaces into supporting functions such as cafes and lounges.

同时对东西两侧的室外场地进行景观梳理，增加了场地的公共性，也作为室内活动的外延。为了适应不同活动的布置需求，室内大部分墙体进行了留白。为了满足空间划分和流线组织的灵活性，我们则采用了大量转门和推拉门来适应不同等级的分割需求。

Additionally, we landscaped the outdoor areas on both the east and west sides, increasing the site’s public accessibility and providing an extension for indoor activities. To accommodate various decoration requirements for different events, most of the interior walls were left blank. To ensure flexibility in space division and circulation organization, we incorporated a large number of sliding and pocket doors to adapt to different levels of partition needs.

改造后的笙白艺术空间已经成功举行了多场活动，得到了一些曝光。仅仅20余年间，这栋建筑的功能就几经转换，希望我们的这次介入可以让它在这飞速的城市化进程中找到自己新的位置，并给整个社区带来一些积极的变化。

Since the renovation, Shengbai Art Space has successfully hosted multiple events and garnered significant attention. Over the course of just over two decades, this building has undergone several program changes. We hope that this intervention will help it find a new position in China’s rapid urbanization process and make a difference to the local community.
