A bosom friend afar brings distant land near. The Oversea album shares the lives of Chinese living abroad with all. The No.50 episode is about Chenyu Pu, who graduated from GSAPP Columbia University and currently working at Heintges & Associates.

为什么出国？
Why go abroad?

本科阶段，学习和生活都比较单一。当我觉察到这一点后就想用最多元的文化刷新一下自己的世界观，于是选择了留学纽约。
I was single-minded during undergraduate years, in both life and academics. I came to the idea of studying in New York immediately after I realized this weakness in me.

在国外遇到了什么让你印象最深刻的事情？
Is there anything happened impressed you the most abroad?

我就读的项目招收很多没有建筑学背景的学生，其中大多数在别的行业学习工作多年，才决定转入建筑行业。然而和国内转入建筑学的同学相比，他们并没有对建筑的“执念”，也不把成为建筑师作为最终目的。他们实现自我的方式似乎更洒脱动态，这种观念也反映了在他们的设计里。

The majority of the students in our program have no background in architecture. With a few years of professional experience in other field, they do not have the obsession commonly seen in Chinese students who changed their major into architecture, nor do they think becoming an architect as the ultimate goal. They have a more dynamic and relaxed, yet personal self-actualization method, and this method is reflected in their design.

最想念祖国的什么？
What do you miss the most about China?

家人，能交心的朋友，以及安抚身心的美食。
My family, my friends that I can truly share my thoughts, and gourmet that pacify my mind.

你会回国吗？为什么？
Will you come back? Why?

肯定会回国，因为觉得最终机遇还是在国内。
Eventually I will go back to China. More opportunities, to my opinion, lie there.

出国后在不同的背景下再看中国是否看得更清晰，有哪些感触？
Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?

因为只有媒体这一个渠道得到祖国的信息，我觉得看事情可能反而更片面了。单一的信息源造成了“看清”的错觉。
Because source of information is limited to media, I am afraid that view of China when abroad can be more biased than when in China. Under this circumstance, the sense of “see though” can be just an illusion of single-sided opinions.

你的学校有哪些教育特点？
What are the educational characteristics of your school?

前建筑学院院长，理论家Mark Wigley带领下的哥大的教育特点就是包容。除了对设计概念的自洽的追求，建筑学院并没有一个统一的风格。每学期有多达20个设计方法迥异的studio可选。选修课也从建筑史，理论思辨到参数化、建筑技术、设计全流程管理等无所不包。而纽约更是一个绝佳的体验建筑/艺术的环境，有数不清的机会去发现更大的世界。这里非常适合学生摸索适合自己的道路。

Under the guide of our former Dean of GSAPP, theorist Mark Wigley, the characteristic of GSAPP is inclusive. Except for the pursuit for a self-contained design concept, no specific style prevails in the school. There are as many as 20 design studios of different design methods to choose from each semester. The electives cover history, speculation to parametric design, building tech, design workflow and many more. The New York City is also a perfect platform for experiencing architecture and art, filled with opportunities to discover what you do not know about the world. GSAPP is the perfect place to find the route that suits yourself the most.

你现在工作公司的特色和有趣的地方？
What are the characteristics and interesting points of you firm?

公司是一个建筑咨询公司，负责了很多著名建筑，如联合国大厦，香港中银银行等的外表皮的设计深化和施工的方方面面。在这里工作即使新人也能和不同设计事务所合作，同时参与不同设计阶段的多个项目。

Heintges & Associates, as an architectural consulting firm, has involved in the design and construction of the façade of many internationally significant buildings, such as UN headquarters, Hongkong Bank of China, etc. In our firm, even new employees has the opportunity to work simultaneously on multiple projects in different design stages with different design firms.

最喜欢的艺术家（绘画音乐电影等广泛范围）是谁？给你创作带来了什么影响？
Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?

James Turrell 和 Richard Sierra。他们作品的诗意存在于简洁的形式。亲眼见到他们的作品实物后，我意识到为了实现这种形式，他们细致地打磨了细节和材质。这对画了太多表现 “简洁” 的效果图的我震撼很大。

The Artists influenced me most are James Turrell and Richard Sierra. When stand in front of their aft piece in person, I realized that he poetic concise geometries in their art pieces can only be achieved when back up with state of art details and materiality. This fact has planted a seed in me who at the time know only representation of conciseness.

觉得自己的作品集有哪些迷人的特质？
What amazing character do your works have?

作品称不上迷人，只能说有一些个人特点。作品更强调细节设计，并且即使在最幻想的设计中依然尝试探索设计成立所需要的未来技术背景。
Though cannot be categorized as fascinating, the interesting parts of my portfolio lies in my respect to detail and technology. Detail design is incorporated into every project. And even in those most unrealistic projects I look for possible future tech solutions.

When did you start to follow gooood? Any suggestions?

我是在准备出国作品集的时候接触到谷德网的。感谢这一出色的建筑资讯网和建筑交流平台陪伴我多年。希望谷德能在非建筑师群体中推广得更好，让更多人知道设计的价值。

I came to know gooood when I was preparing my application portfolio. I am glad that such an excellent website has accompanied me for these years. I hope gooood can boost its popularity in non-designers, helping them to realize the power of design.

1.Collective Urbanism
Architecture + Real Estate Joint Studio
Instructor: Laurie Hawkinson, Vishaan Chakrabarti

本次设计作为一个思维练习，分别从纽约和巴塞罗那选出了尺寸相似的两个闲置地块，试图从经济和城市发展的角度提出一个通用的规划/设计模型，设计两个综合体嵌入地块，将类似于“平价住宅“的理念扩展至住宅的功能之外。教育，作为一种通行的阶级上升渠道，被选为我们这个模型的主题。我们通过分析城市发展趋势和社区内的稀缺功能，将专项教育和城市产业结合，让占满整个街区的教育综合体融合到城市的未来中。

This design, as a speculating exercise, aimed to provide one socio-economically effective planning/design model for New York and Barcelona. Two complex, which has a program beyond affordable housing, were developed using the model for two underdeveloped blocks in the two cities. Education, as a universal method for social mobility, was chosen as the motif of this exercise. By analyzing the future industrial trend of the city, we mixed the trend with education dedicated to related field, integrating the super block into the future of the city.

两个项目均与房地产项目的研究生合作，进行了经济可行性分析。通过市场化部分功能，对开发商减税和建成后现金流分配，将初期政府投入减至最小，同时尽可能缩短投资回报周期。

The projects on both sites are backed with sound financial analysis with the help from real estate development department. Methods including marketize some of the developments, tax deduction to private developers, sharing of cash flow, were used to minimize the initial governmental investment, and minimize the investment return period.

Spatial Strategy: Vertically stacked programs connected by sunken spaces.

Industrial Strategy: Juxtaposing Biotech start-ups and Biotech education in one laboratory space to facilitate innovation as well as employment.
Program Strategy: Biotech Advanced Education, Retail, Subsidized Housing, Rental Bio Laboratory.
Spatial Strategy: Communicational mezzanine space with controlled vertical access individually controlled by each laboratory.

2. Bank of Time
Core studio

现代社会中几乎任何东西都可以钱度量。普通银行帮助人们管理他们的金融财产，却没有银行能管理人们的精神财富。然而银行的基本活动若脱离了货币这一载体，应该基于何种载体来提供服务？一个答案即为时间。

Almost everything in the society is monetarily measured. Too many banks exist to manage the monetary assets for the people. Few can manage the spiritual assets for them. Without the monetary credit as the carrier, what would be the media for spiritual banking service? One of the answer is time.

在时间之银行中，通过一系列仪式性空间，用户将自己与繁杂思绪隔离开来，进入各种不同特质的“库”中沉思。这个过程中，人们取出日常经验，转化成智慧存入自己 -即可谓存时现在，投资未来。投资渠道、主体和客体都是用户自身，即用户本身就成为了银行，而时间银行本身则成为了一个满是“银行”的城市。

In the Bank of Time, walking through a series of ritual space, the customers separate themselves from the overloaded mundane affairs, entering one of the diversely themed Vaults for meditation. In this process, the customers withdraw the daily experience and turn it into wisdom, re-deposit it in to themselves – it is essentially withdrawing present and investing in the future. The subject, object and media of the investment are all the custom themselves. Eventually it is the customer the Bank of Time, while the physical Bank of Time is a micro city full of banks.

Tech Elective

哥伦比亚大学建筑系馆背后的庭院虽然正对一个被经常使用的学校出入口，植被环绕，却人迹罕至，甚至于被划为附近教学楼的吸烟区。为了让人重新认识这被熟视无睹的空间，我们设计了一个仪式性的入口放置在了庭院正对校园出入口的一侧，即Chiris the Portal。而Chiris 作为一扇门，以非常规的互动方式减少了遮挡带来的不便，又增加了通过的仪式感。
The courtyard behind the Avery Hall in Columbia University, though facing a frequently used entrance of the school and covered in greens, is a long-forgotten corner that has recently been selected as a smoking area. To help people re-discover the beautiful space, a ritual door was designed and placed on the side of the courtyard that face the school entrance. The door, so called Chiris the Portal, with an unusual actuation move, greatly increased the mysteriosity of the site with minimal visual obstacle.

整个装置取材自苏州园林的圆形门，用胶合木和帆布制作，共有72根杆件，7种共84个铰接点， 144个三角形cladding。每个节点都经过反复测试确认公差，组件都经过手工打磨，以保证滑动时阻力最小，即使儿童也可以单手开闭。环形主体仅有一处支撑点，并通过钢索稳定在10’x 10’的底座上，显得轻盈无比。

Imaging the circular garden door in Suzhou gardens, the installation was composed of 72 rods, 84 pivot joints of 7 kinds, and 144 triangular cladding. Except for the joint hardware, all components were made of plywood or canvas, hand sanded. All kinds of joints were tested multiple times to ensure minimal friction. The result is a Zero-gravity actuation that even children can operate with single hand. The circular main structure is supported only at one point on the 10’by 10’ base, balanced with four thin cables. The whole installation is visually floating.

4. House of Corners
Housing Studio
Instructor: Robert Marino

纽约的公共住宅千篇一律：封闭，孤立，巨大，让人避之不及。而行人目光不能及的地方总是犯罪滋生的温床。而居住公共住宅中的却并不总是最需要廉价住宅的群体。按照价格歧视理论，提供给低收入人群的产品必须具有高收入人群不能接受而低收入人群不十分在意的特点，才能保证供给的针对性。

The public housing in New York is monotonous. They are huge, isolated and opaque, repulsing pedestrians. To make it worse, where pedestrian’s eyes cannot reach, crime grows. Meanwhile, the residents of the public housing are not always who need the housing most. According to the theory of price discrimination, the products provided to the low-income group must have properties that is acceptable to the low-income but intolerable to the high-income. Thus the pertinence of the product can be maintained.

我们决定在容积率和日光条件允许的极限内，增加建筑密度，同时打开住宅公共区域的角落形成视觉通透的阳台。一方面适度降低客厅的私密性，挑选出对私密要求相对不高却对社区感要求高的低收入人群，一方面增加注视着社区公共区域的眼睛，减少死角内的犯罪。

The design team decided to maximize the building density within the limit of FAR and sky exposure plane, while opening the corners of the residential towers to provide transparent balconies. The balconies reduce the privacy of the living room and increasing the chance of communication. This picks out the low-income group that have relatively low needs for privacy but high demand of communication. On the other hand, the transparent balconies increase the number of eyes looking at the public area of the community, eliminating the crimes in corners.

住宅采用预制混凝土核心筒搭配轻量化的再生木梁。这种结构调整了建筑整体重心，减少了悬挑结构的建造成本和建筑全周期的碳排放，以达到公共住宅廉价和快速建造的要求。

The towers are composed of pre-fabricated concrete cores and light weight recycled laminated timber beams. This structure position the center of mass closer to the center, reducing the construction cost of cantilevered balconies as well as the carbon emission in the building life cycle. The structure also enables swift construction at a low cost.

5. Miami Wave
Tech Elective
Instructor: Robert Heintges

处于1A气候区的迈阿密阳光强烈天气炎热。作为常年太阳高度角很高的地区，水平遮阳能有效减少阳光辐射进入室内，让大面积的玻璃立面成为可能。而大面积的玻璃外立面运用，又产生了新的需求——防范飓风中杂物撞击。一个可抬起、闭合的遮阳板则可以同时满足这两个需求。这个设计中，30片可动遮阳板串联一个单元，首尾为主动板，内藏步进电机以绕轴旋转。之间的板为从动板，在底部以可伸缩金属杆相互连接。主从结构减少了电气组件的复杂性，降低了故障的可能，同时在两片主动遮阳板间靠重力自然形成了一个优美的弧度。

Located in climate zone 1A, Miami is famous for strong sunlight. As the solar altitude is high throughout the year, horizontal sunshades are effective in reducing the solar heat gain, making all glass façade possible. Glass facades again creates the need for protection from wind bourn debris in hurricanes. An operable horizontal sunshade can satisfy both the requirements. In this design, 30 sunshade blades compose a module, with the first and last blade being the actuator. All blades between them are passive and are actuated by the expandable rod between them. This configuration reduces the complexity of the electric system and lowered the risk of malfunctioning. Meanwhile, the passive blades form a beautiful curve under gravity.
