Background

In 2024, we completed the “Tiger Flyer Mountain Forest” children’s playground by Liuquan Lake in Yichang’s Xiaoting District. Nestled into the rolling foothills, the project takes “Tiger Flyer” as its spiritual motif, creating a climbing and adventure system where children traverse and dash between hillside exploration loops and mound-based play structures. A year later, we return to Liuquan Lake—this time with a design focus shifting from hillside to waterfront. The new site occupies a gentle slope along the lake shore, directly across the water from “Tiger Flyer Mountain Forest,” forming a key node in the lake’s ring-based recreation system. The two playgrounds establish a natural spatial dialogue: one nestled in the hillside woodlands, the other along the waterfront; one rooted in the hillside with an emphasis on climbing and exploration, the other opening onto the lake with a focus on water-play experiences.

Site Analysis

The site is located on the west bank of Liuquan Lake Park in Xiaoting District, Yichang City. The base is a gentle slope that gradually extends toward the lake. As revealed by the historical evolution of the terrain, this area was originally part of the hillside that naturally descended to the lakeshore. However, with the construction of the ring‑lake road and subsequent site preparation, the hillock gradually became separated from the main hill mass, forming an independent lakeside knoll covering an area of approximately 12,000 square meters. The existing topography is relatively monotonous: a uniform 15% grade slope descends directly to the water’s edge, with a complete lawn cover and only a few native trees. Although the site enjoys expansive lake views, it lacks the layered variations and spatial richness expected of a natural landform. Yet it is precisely this blank slate that gives the site the potential for regeneration and new growth.

Design Principle

The design starts from the site’s original topography, hydrology, ecology, and regional culture, reshaping the space with minimum intervention, and allowing porpoises, water flow, terrain, and children’s behaviors to collectively participate in the formation of the site. What we aim to establish is a spatial relationship in which nature generates play, and play, in turn, helps children understand nature.

01. Topography-Generated Play

Confronted with the originally straight, homogeneous lakeside slope, we first asked ourselves: if water were to become the force shaping the site, how would this hillock evolve? Through localized cut‑and‑fill operations and micro‑topography reshaping, the design transforms the previously uniform 15% gentle slope into a mosaic of shallows, slopes, caves, depressions, and understory spaces, embedding play equipment within these topographic relationships. Our intention is that play is no longer defined by the quantity of equipment, but is instead generated collectively by terrain, elevation changes, water flow, pathways, and spatial scale. This represents a shift from “Equipment‑based Play” to “Landscape‑based Play”—where landscape is no longer merely a backdrop for play equipment, but becomes the very infrastructure that organizes children’s activities.

02. Spatial Narrative of Porpoise Wave-Riding

If “Tiger Flyer Mountain Forest” tells a story of mountain growth, then Liuquan Lake Water Discovery Park tells a story of porpoises, rivers, and the flow of life. The design adopts the Yangtze finless porpoise as the spiritual archetype of the site—not only because it is the most iconic flagship species of the Yangtze basin, but also because it is a significant ecological and cultural symbol of Yichang. It embodies the health of the Yangtze River ecosystem and carries the public awareness fostered by the ongoing “Yangtze River Conservation” initiative in recent years. The design thus takes the porpoise’s waveriding posture as the spiritual archetype of the site, translating its streamlined body into largescale play structures that can be climbed and slid upon. The topographic logic is not arbitrarily generated; rather, it takes the “water ripples” created by the porpoise’s entry into the water as the design prototype, allowing spaces such as caves, shallows, streams, and depressions to unfold progressively. In this way, sliding occurs along elevation changes, climbing follows the terrain, water play is organized along the flow of streams, and exploration is hidden within caves and slopes. The finless porpoise thus transforms from a mere ecological symbol to be observed into a dynamic spatial narrative, ultimately becoming a spatial medium that can be experienced through the body. This translation also brings the macroecological theme of “Yangtze River Conservation” into children’s daily lives. Children do not need to understand the finless porpoise through abstract knowledge; rather, through sliding, climbing, wading, and chasing, they establish their first sensory connection with this creature of the Yangtze—allowing a single porpoise to become a child’s gateway to knowing the river.

03. Perceptible Hydrological Experience

Liuquan Lake itself possesses the characteristics of a wetland and sponge ecological system. Therefore, the project does not treat water merely as a medium for recreation; rather, it attempts to give water a triple role—ecological, spatial, and educational. Rainwater is infiltrated and purified through grass swales, rain gardens, and permeable pavement; play water is continuously reused after circulation and filtration; while streams, shallows, mist forests, and fountains further translate the processes of water flow, evaporation, accumulation, and cycling into spatial experiences. More importantly, we hope these ecological processes can be directly perceived by children. Water flows from higher to lower elevations, gathering into streams; streams pass through shallows, forming water‑play spaces of varying scales; mist modifies the local microclimate and also alters children’s perception of temperature, humidity, and air movement. In this way, the sponge city is no longer confined to underground pipe networks and technical systems, but is transformed into a landscape process that can be seen, touched, and physically felt. Water is both a play medium and an ecological infrastructure; it serves environmental functions while also becoming a child’s first classroom for understanding nature.

04. Integrating Nature Education into Play

The project embeds nature education within play itself: children chase the flow of water in streams, observe water bodies in shallows, perceive microclimates through mist, search for light and shadow in caves, understand elevation changes on slopes, and engage in spatial imagination about the life of the Yangtze River through the porpoise structures. Nature is no longer a “background” outside the playground, but becomes the very condition for play to occur. This further shifts the project from a conventional “children’s activity ground” toward an ecological public space for the next generation—one where children, through play, come to understand water, terrain, and living beings, and gradually realize that humans and nature are not independent of each other, but coexist within a continuously evolving ecosystem.

Design Strategy

01. How to Bring the Water Story into the Site? — Porpoise Wave-Riding, Ripples into Landscape

A rain falls upon the hillock on the west bank of Liuquan Lake. Raindrops gather into streams, and streams pool into depressions—just at this moment, a finless porpoise leaps in, landing in the shallow water. Where it enters, ripples spread outward in layers, caressing every contour of the hillock’s terrain: hollows are scoured into caves, rises are wetted into shallows, and the once flat and rigid topography becomes soft and animated under the sculpting hand of water. We simulate this process, taking the instant of the porpoise’s entry as the origin of the site’s transformation, and turning each ring of ripples into a contour line of the terrain. In this way, the isolated hillock is reconnected with the lake, the shore, and the Tiger Flyer Mountain Forest on the opposite bank—as if the porpoise once leaped here, and the ripples have never subsided to this day.

02. How to Construct the Water Play Content? – A Cluster of Play Installations Born of Water

As the ripples recede, installations born of water emerge one by one: the streamlined form of the porpoise solidifies into a giant blue slide structure, becoming the absolute visual focal point of the site; thin‑shell caves grow from the arcs of the ripples, their curved roofs curling like rolling waves, with dappled light and shadow between the columns, inviting children to weave through and explore; bionic water‑spray devices resembling aquatic plants are scattered across the shallows, enveloping the site in a misty haze that makes it seem as if it has just awakened from the water. The installations are organically distributed along the traces of water flow—from dynamic water play to tranquil light and shadow, from ecological observation to free jumping—each piece born of water and shaped by its flow.

03. How to Complete the Final Narrative of the Water Park? – Interweaving Water and Land, a Closed Narrative Loop

The final surge of “water” completes the qualitative transformation from “having water” to “being a water park.” Shallow water gently ripples across the pools and shallows, creating spaces for the youngest children to play; mist forests diffuse along the cave walls, cooling and humidifying the air; water circulates, purifies, and permeates throughout the park. Water is no longer merely a theme, but the true connector of the space—it flows through shallows, passes through caves, surrounds installations, and gathers in depressions, linking the four zones into a complete play sequence. Following the path of water, children journey from splashing to exploring, from observing to leaping, completing a full narrative about the finless porpoise and the water.

Space Design

The entire site is composed of four themed zones and twenty‑four play installations, arranged in hierarchical layers along the contour lines. They are:Yangtze Finless Porpoise Adventure Bay, Cave Water Maze, Aquatic Weed Shoal, and Jellyfish Cloud Island. Each zone corresponds to a chapter in the story of porpoises, rivers, and the flow of life, with play experiences that are both independent and interconnected, together forming a complete “Water Discovery” sequence.

The zone includes the Wave‑Jumping Slope, the Falling‑Water Slide, the River‑Leaping Slide, the Underground River Slide, the Rock‑Piercing Ring, the Cave‑Top Water Cannon, the Underground River Maze Path, and the Rock‑Top Climbing Ladder. The Cave Water Maze continues to unfold along the ripples. Using a fair‑faced concrete thin‑shell structure, it creates a maze reminiscent of a natural water‑filled cave. The continuous, undulating cave spaces are interwoven with light, shadow, flowing water, and mist. Children experience the thrill of exploration and the unknown on the Wave‑Jumping Slope, the Falling‑Water Slide, and the rock‑climbing routes. Compared to the openness and speed of the Adventure Bay, the Cave Water Maze places greater emphasis on mystery, exploration, and spatial perception, turning play into active learning. It also serves as a comfortable summer retreat, where children can enjoy the most intimate and wild moments with water and nature amid the cooling mist and water‑cycle exploration.

The zone includes the Rock Creek Waterway, the Water Sprite Jumping Fountain, the Waterweed Rain Curtain, the Bubbling Gurgle Spring, the Mist Forest, the Swaying Seesaw, the Porpoise Lookout, and the Spring Eye Water Cannon. The Aquatic Weed Shoal unfolds in a more nature‑close manner: a winding grey washed‑stone creek channel meanders through the shoal, blending seamlessly with the surrounding organically shaped wading pools, as if naturally formed. The site is dotted with bionic waterweed and bud‑shaped fountain installations in blue‑and‑white faded tones, complemented by a gentle cooling mist system that creates a visually and physically refreshing experience during summer. Above the shallow creek, curved water arches rise to form a whimsical “splash arcade” for children. Beside the wading pools, light‑grey curved resting benches and planted island tree pits are integrated, allowing parents to sit by the lakeshore and gaze out at the lake and hills—while children chase through the mist in the shallows, enjoying an intimate and wild time with nature. The Aquatic Weed Shoal achieves water‑human interaction in a more natural way, and also provides a comfortable environment for families to wander, observe, and rest together, naturally blending ecological education with everyday play.

Construction

The construction of the water park fully considered site topography, material selection, and building logic. The site’s micro‑topography was reshaped in accordance with the lakeside slope, with earthwork balanced on‑site and existing vegetation and soil systems preserved as much as possible. The core play areas are surfaced with high‑elasticity EPDM safety surfacing, while the water exploration zones feature washed‑stone paving in blue and grey‑blue tones, echoing the imagery of the finless porpoise. The iconic blue porpoise framework is constructed with a steel structure, its streamlined form controlled through parametric modeling, integrating multiple play functions such as slides, climbing, and crawling, with internal lighting and ventilation also ensured. A mist system is employed to reduce perceived temperatures in summer and to enhance children’s intuitive perception of microclimate and the water cycle. The overall architectural language strives for simplicity, durability, and ease of maintenance, supporting the park’s long‑term safety and sustainable operation.

EPDM Site Color Scheme

The ground surfacing employs a differentiated combination: blue EPDM mats are used for the core play area (Yangtze Finless Porpoise Adventure Bay), providing cushioning and shock absorption for safety; grey washed stone is used for all “water exploration” zones (Cave Water Maze, Aquatic Weed Shoal), with finegrain antislip texture that takes on a streambed sheen when wet. In terms of color, the EPDM incorporates lake blue, wave blue, and wave white to create a lively atmosphere; the washed stone uses light, medium, and dark greys to establish an ecological undertone. Where the two meet in the waterplay areas, blue and grey interweave, with soft and hard surfaces joining together—ensuring both safety and slip resistance, while achieving multidimensional texture under a unified color palette, resulting in rich and natural layering.

Afterword

The mountain‑lake landscape of Liuquan Lake gives us the opportunity to integrate nature education into children’s everyday play, and to translate grand ecological themes such as Yangtze River conservation into tangible, hands‑on moments that children can experience firsthand. We hope that as children run here, they are not merely playing, but quietly forging a connection with a porpoise, a river, and a cycle of life. This connection may be subtle, yet it will grow slowly within them, allowing the park to transcend mere entertainment space and become an important medium that links the city, nature, and the future of its children. Together, Tiger Flyer Mountain Forest and Porpoise Wave‑Riding form a complete sequence of children’s play experiences—mountain and water, strength and softness, speed and flow. The two parks echo each other, jointly building a comprehensive mountain‑lake children’s play system for Liuquan Lake, and together offering the city a model of public space that is regionally distinctive, sustainable, and educationally meaningful.
