Casa La Vista is a striking residence with a powerful, tectonic presence. Rising from the dunes of the vast Baja California Sur Desert, the house rests on a cliff overlooking the horizon. Its layout is oriented southeast to deliberately frame the meeting point between sky and sea, facing the coast of San José del Cabo and Punta Gorda.

In a challenging climate for both space and materials, our primary design focus was the creation of a substantial roof, a generous element that brings life to the various wings of the residence, and enables the architecture to engage in dialogue with the desert through synergy rather than resistance.

The house unfolds into three wings, which are connected by a longitudinal axis that naturally traverses them. Two of these contain five bedrooms, linked by a desert garden that encourages movement, interaction, and contemplation, and which leads to the social wing: the heart of shared life.

The house was constructed using stone from the local Santa Catarina quarry, which envelops it in the earthy tones of its surroundings, dissolving the boundaries between architecture and landscape. In the social wing, Puebla travertine cladding provides a soft, luminous contrast to the warmth of the Ojinaga stone flooring and roof. We chose the noble Rosa Morada wood for the carpentry, leaving it unstained to allow its natural colour to breathe.

The extreme climate demanded a rethink of the relationship between interior and exterior. Large overhangs were incorporated to provide shade and protection. When the openings are fully open, cross-ventilation is generated along the central axis, cooling the inner courtyards with gentle breezes that seem to rise from the ground itself.

All the vegetation is endemic and was carefully transplanted from the adjacent ecosystem. Its arrangement is intentional rather than random, composed of rhythms, sequences and assemblies that accompany movement, modulate shade and animate the spaces.

Casa La Vista
What makes Casa La Vista special is not only its location or the materials used, but also the atmosphere it creates. It is a residence designed to be lived in calmly, where each step feels guided by a tangible serenity. A quiet warmth envelops the space, as if the house itself were breathing in time with the desert.
