Oumoumou奥默默这个名字灵感来源于人类已知的第一颗经过太阳系的星际天体——奥陌陌Oumuamua，这个远道而来天体轨迹独特且令人充满想象。我们认为，当下复兴历史街区需要超越传统意义上的建筑物质性修缮，更应深入生活意义的发掘、保护和激活，而进入“日常性”的复兴。

The name of the studio is inspired by Oumuamua, the first interstellar object known to man to pass through the solar system, which has a unique trajectory and leaves much to the imagination. We believe that the revitalisation of historic districts now needs to go beyond the traditional physical restoration of buildings and go deeper into the discovery, preservation and activation of the meaning of life, and into the revitalisation of “everydayness”.

Three Teams

工作室主持建筑师张海翱，上海交通大学设计实践院院长、设计学院院长助理、建筑系副教授、奥默默工作室主持设计师、博士、国家一级注册建筑师。第十八届威尼斯建筑国际双年展中国馆执行策展人，2019年SUSAS上海市空间艺术季执行策展人。

Oumuamua’s design team is responsible for practical projects in the fields of architecture, interior design, landscape design and urban regeneration. The team works on practical projects that shape urban spaces and enhance living environments through design and planning.

Oumuamua’s research team focuses on academic research and publication and is dedicated to exploring new technologies and cutting-edge knowledge in the field of urban design. It focuses on in-depth research in areas such as urban regeneration, providing the team with academic support and innovative thinking.

Oumuamua’s community team (Egg Pie) was founded on the basis of Oumuamua ‘s overall urban regeneration projects in Shanghai. Through its extensive urban regeneration practice, it is committed to creating community living rooms that combine community creation activities to form a co-creation and co-construction urban regeneration design path.

这三个团队相互支撑和关联，通过实践项目、学术研究和社区营造等方面的合作，形成一个综合性的工作室。他们在不同领域和角色中互相补充，以实践经验、学术知识和社区营造为基础。

我们的团队成员大概控制在10~15人左右。每年的项目大概有20个到30个左右。通常是结合着一些实践类项目，研究类项目及一些技术探索类项目三个部分组成。

The three teams support and relate to each other, forming an integrated studio through collaboration in practical projects, academic research and community creation. They complement each other in different fields and roles, building on practical experience, academic knowledge and community shaping.

Our team is probably limited to about 10 to 15 members. There are probably around 20 to 30 projects per year. They are usually a combination of practical projects, research projects and some technical exploration projects.

Philosophy in practice

01. 核心：重现当代生活的“人间烟火”
The core: recreating the “everydayness” of contemporary life

我们认为，当下复兴历史街区需要超越传统意义上的建筑物质性修缮，更应深入生活意义的发掘、保护和激活，而进入“日常性”的复兴。敏感捕捉日常生活中细微的美好与光芒，挖掘历史街区深厚的文化底蕴，融入当代生活美学，最大程度地唤醒那些熟悉的邻里空间和公共生活。以空间品质功能性提升和柔性界面融入为目标的历史街区空间综合整治实践，其内核是微空间的针灸式改造和利益相关方的广泛参与，最终重现街区的文化深度和当代生活的“人间烟火”。

We believe that the revitalization of historic districts should go beyond the traditional physical restoration of buildings and go deeper into the discovery, preservation and activation of the meaning of life, and into the revival of “everydayness”. Sensitive to capturing the subtle beauty and light of everyday life, the community’s profound cultural heritage should be explored and integrated into contemporary living aesthetics to maximize the awakening of those familiar neighborhood spaces and public life. The core of the practice of comprehensive spatial regeneration of historic districts, which aims at functional improvement of spatial quality and integration of flexible interfaces, is the acupuncture transformation of micro-spaces and extensive participation of stakeholders, ultimately recreating the cultural depth of the district and the “everydayness” of contemporary life.

02. 谈“学院派”与“网红建筑”
“Academism ” VS “Internet-famous architecture”

关于国内关于”学院派”的论述，它是对设计团队或设计思维方式的一种描述。在中国设计界，有人认为”学院派”的设计团队注重设计的理论性、学术性和专业性，重视设计的深度和内涵，以独特的设计理念和创新的设计方法著称。他们通常会在设计中融入对历史、文化、社会和环境等方面的深入研究，注重设计的整体性和可持续性。但是需要注意的是，理论研究的核心是为了指导实践。建筑设计作为一个非常具有实践性的学科啊，理论研究恰恰是提供一种把实践的规律转化为方法论的工具箱，通过这个工具箱可以更好的提高设计实践的效率，而不是为了理论研究而研究。

The term ‘academism’ is used in China to describe a design team or a way of thinking about design. In China’s context, it is believed that ‘academic’ practices focus more on the theoretical and professional aspects of design, emphasize the depth and connotation of design, and are known for their unique design concepts and innovative methods. They often incorporate in-depth research into historical, cultural, social and environmental aspects into their projects, with a focus on holistic and sustainable design. It is important to note, however, that the core of theoretical research is to guide practice. As a very practical discipline, theoretical research provides a toolbox to translate the rules of practice into a methodology that can improve the efficiency of design practice, not for the sake of research.

事务所在前期参加了一系列电视节目，从中我们明白了建筑作品作为媒体传播需要满足一些条件。与常规建筑设计相比，建筑作品更注重其传播效应，因为实际参观建筑的人数有限，而通过图像或影像可以将其传达给更多人。

这引出了一个热门话题，即网红建筑。目前网红建筑备受关注，人们对此有不同的声音，包括赞赏和批判。然而，我们认为许多建筑，包括当年柯布西耶所提倡的新建筑，以及当时他自己做创办的纸质媒体杂志推广方式，实际上都在将现代建筑推向了被广泛关注的网红建筑的高度。尽管当时并没有这个术语，但本质上它们与现在的网红建筑相似，都能够引起人们的关注和产生较强的传播效果。只要这些建筑作品引起了正能量或者积极关注，它们可以成为良好的示范，提高公众对传统建筑学科和建筑行业的认知和曝光度。

因此，网红建筑实际上指的是那些具有较高传播力和引起广泛关注的建筑作品。只要这些作品能够传递积极的价值和意义，它们就能成为建筑学和建筑行业的典范，增加公众对这一传统学科和行业的认识和关注。

Over these years, the studio has been involved in a series of television programs, from which we have learnt that there are certain conditions that need to be met in order for architectural works to be communicated as media. In contrast to conventional architectural design, such type of architecture is more about propagation effect, as the number of people who can actually visit the building is limited, whereas it can be communicated to a wider audience through images or videos.

This leads to a popular topic, namely the “Internet – famous architecture”. It is currently in the limelight and there are different voices about it, both appreciative and critical. However, we believe that lots of buildings, including the “Vers une architecture” advocated by Le Corbusier back then, and the way he did the promotion of the paper media magazines he lunched at the time, were actually pushing modern architecture to the heights of the much talked about “internet-famous architecture”. Although the term did not exist at the time, in essence they were similar to the current internet-famous architecture in that they were able to capture attention and produce a strong communication effect. As long as these architectural works generate positive influence or attention, they can serve as good models to increase public awareness and exposure of the traditional architectural discipline and the building industry.

Therefore, internet – famous architecture actually refers to those architectural works that have high communication power and generate widespread attention. As long as these works can convey positive values and meanings, they can serve as a model for architecture and the building industry, increasing public awareness and attention to this traditional discipline and industry.

01. 乡村振兴
Rural revitalization

乡村振兴成为了当前国内非常热门的话题，但乡村振兴面临的难题也十分明显，其中一个难点就是投资和回报的比例相对于城市房地产开发来说较低。因此，乡村振兴往往需要依靠企业、政府和当地乡村力量的共同协作，共同推动乡村振兴的发展。在水闸改造项目和云知道装置中，我们也是在这三方力量的支持下共同打造的。当然，评论者常常会问这个东西到底是为旅游者还是为当地村民而设计，但实际上我们应该认识到，无论是旅游者、当地居民、政府、投资企业还是设计师，都是整个庞大而复杂系统中微小的环节。如果我们希望整个系统能够良性运转并不断迭代，就必须保证整个系统的运行，而不是仅仅为某一个环节而存在。

如果这个项目只是一个公益项目，或者说我们纯粹出于爱心为村民做了一个公益项目，那它是不可持续的。我们实际上需要找到一条路径，让整个系统能够良性运行。我认为这也是乡村振兴项目的核心所在。作为设计师，通过参与其中并推动整个系统的正向循环，是非常有意义的。我们可以发挥自己的作用，促进乡村振兴项目的可持续发展，从而使整个系统更加健康、繁荣。

Rural revitalisation has become a very hot topic in China at present, but the difficulties faced by rural revitalisation are also very obvious. One of the difficulties is the low ratio of investment and return compared to urban real estate development. Therefore, rural revitalisation often needs to rely on the joint collaboration of enterprises, government and local rural forces. In the Local practice of rural micro-renewal in Huzhou, we also collaborated with the support of these three forces. Of course, commentators often ask whether the project is designed for tourists or local villagers, but what we should recognize is that tourists, local residents, the government, investors and architects are all playing a small role in the whole huge and complex system. If we want it to function well and iterate, we must ensure that the whole system works, not just for a specific part.

If the project is just built for public service, or purely out of care for the villagers, it will then not be sustainable. We actually need to find a path that allows the whole system to run benignly. I think this is also the core of all rural revitalisation projects. As architects, it makes a lot of sense to get involved and promote a positive cycle through the whole system. We can play our part in promoting the sustainability of the rural revitalisation project, thus making the whole system healthier and more prosperous.

02. 城市更新
Urban renewal

城市更新项目与一般的开发商主导项目有着显著的区别，主要体现在对待已有环境的态度。城市更新项目所涉及的土地并非一片空地，而是承载着许多历史故事、人文关系和物质遗存。因此，在进行更新时，如何考虑和融合这些已有元素与新引进的更新设计之间的关系变得至关重要。

在城市更新项目中，关注和理解已有的群体、物体和社会关系，以及它们与新引进的更新设计之间的关联，是非常重要的。因此，在进行改造项目时，通常需要根据实际情况修改任务书，甚至由设计师作为建筑策划者来编写任务书，而不是完全由业主方制定任务书。这与传统的建筑设计项目有着明显区别，传统项目中由甲方拟定任务书，然后设计方作为乙方按照任务书完成工作。

城市更新项目的独特性在于，它需要综合考虑和平衡各种利益相关方的需求和利益，同时充分尊重和利用已有的环境和历史遗产。这种综合性和相互关联性的考虑使得城市更新项目更具挑战性，但也为城市的可持续发展和社区的文化延续提供了更好的机会。

Urban renewal projects differ significantly from typical developer-led projects, mainly in their approach to the existing environment. The site involved in an urban renewal project is more than an empty plot of land, but carries with it many historical stories, human relationships and material remains. Therefore, it becomes crucial to consider and integrate these existing elements with the newly introduced regeneration design when undertaking renewal projects.

In urban renewal projects, it is important to pay attention to and understand the relationship among existing groups, objects and social contexts, and how they relate to the newly introduced design. Therefore, in this type of projects, it is often necessary to modify the brief to suit the actual situation, or even have the designer act as an architectural planner to recompose the brief, rather than having it developed entirely by the owner. This is distinctly different from traditional architectural projects where the client draws up the brief and then the designer follows to complete the work in accordance with the brief.

Urban renewal projects are unique in that it requires a comprehensive consideration and balance of the needs and interests of the various stakeholders, while respecting and utilizing the existing environmental and historical heritage. Such integrated and interconnected considerations make urban regeneration projects more challenging, but also provide better opportunities for sustainable urban development and the cultural continuation of communities.

03. 社区激活
Community Activation

正如之前所述，我们的团队中有一个名为蛋黄派社区营造社的分支。这个团队主要由年轻成员组成，他们会在城市更新项目开始之前带着摄像机、设备和游戏设备等，到社区中进行社区营造活动。这些活动的核心是与社区真正的使用者和居民一起进行游戏和活动，并赠送小礼品。这样的活动对于城市更新至关重要。

As mentioned before, there is a branch of our team called “Egg Pie” that dedicates to community shaping. This team is mainly made up of young members who always do field trips in the community with their cameras and all kinds of devices to carry out community building activities before the urban renewal project starts. At the heart of these activities are games and activities with real users and residents of the community, and giving away small gifts. Such events are vital for our urban regeneration practices.

首先，这些活动是一次破冰之旅，能够拉近我们设计方与真正的使用者之间的关系。其次，通过与社区居民的互动，我们可以结合业主方的需求，了解真正的使用者在地方面的需求，从而对之前的城市更新任务书进行优化和细化。

最后，这些活动也能够获取在地居民的想法和意见，我们可以更好地与上级部门和政府单位进行沟通，以在政府、投资企业、居民和设计师之间找到一个综合平衡的解决方案。

通过这样的社区营造活动，我们能够建立起设计方、使用者和居民之间的紧密联系，了解他们的需求和想法，并将其融入到城市更新项目中，从而创造出更符合实际需求和社区文化的更新方案。

Firstly, they are an ice-breaking journey that brings us closer to the real users. Secondly, by interacting with the community, we are able to combine the needs of both the owners and the users in the local context, and thus optimize and refine the previous urban regeneration briefs.

Finally, these activities also enable us to collect the ideas and opinions of the local residents, and we can better communicate with the local authorities and government units in order to find a comprehensive and balanced solution between the government, the investors, the residents and the designers.

Through such community building activities, we are allowed to establish a strong link between designers, users and residents, understand their needs and ideas, and incorporate them into urban regeneration projects to create solutions that are more in line with the actual needs and culture of the community.

04. 技术创新
Technological innovation

在我们的项目中，我们非常注重将新兴技术与当代建筑相结合，尤其在这几个项目中，技术和建筑的融合程度非常高。我们认为在长期的发展过程中，尽管在早期，关于未来技术对建筑的影响有很多理论探讨，但在我们实际生活中，技术与建筑之间的关系仍然处于一种既近又远的状态。大部分建筑的基本构造原理仍然延续了几千年前的基本建筑方法，并没有发生革命性的变化，除了一些设备对建筑产生影响之外，其他技术相对来说对建筑的影响并不是很大。

In our projects there is a strong focus on integrating emerging technologies with contemporary architecture, and in these projects in particular there is a high degree of integration of technology and architecture. We believe that over a long period of time, the relationship between technology and architecture remains in a state of both proximity and distance in our practical life, despite the early theoretical discussions about the impact of future technologies on architecture. The basic construction principles of most buildings still continue to be the same as the basic building methods of thousands of years ago, without revolutionary change, and apart from some devices that have an impact on architecture, other technologies do not have a relatively large impact on architecture.

因此，我们希望建筑能够从空间的角度来思考建筑技术，而不仅仅停留在建筑的构造技术或材料技术层面上。这就是为什么这几个案例同时也是电视节目的原因，因为它们需要传播，同时借助这些案例，我们也在探索建筑技术对建筑空间本质是否有推动的可能性。当然，还有许多不成熟的地方，我们正在进一步探讨。

Therefore, we want architecture to be able to engage with building technology from a spatial point of view, and not just at the level of construction techniques or material technologies. This is why these projects were also presented in television programs – they need to be spread out, and with the help of these projects we are also exploring the possibility of whether architectural technology can contribute to the spatial nature of architecture. Of course, there are still many immaturities that we are exploring further.

我们团队的项目涉及到城市更新和人与城市的关系，同时也在进行一些新技术的探索，如元宇宙和AI设计。我们进行了内部的论证和研究，并参与了一些竞赛和设计活动。然而，我们认为这两个方面并不矛盾。

Our team’s projects involve urban regeneration and the relationship between people and the city, while also exploring some new technologies such as metaverse and AI design. We have conducted internal argumentation and research, and participated in a number of competitions and design events. However, we do not see these two aspects as contradictory.

这些案例中所涉及的技术，在后续的项目中我们也在运用，包括在极小户型和房车等领域。我们正在进行二次验证和论证，并取得了一定的进展。我们希望通过这些实践和探索，能够发现建筑技术对建筑空间的创新可能性，并为未来的设计和实践提供更多的可能性。

最近我们还与一家备受认可的知名品牌携手合作，共同研发并设计了一款前所未有的三扩展升顶可变房车。这一创新的房车概念旨在为未来的移动生活方式提供更多可能性。

这款房车具备卓越的灵活性，其三个扩展升顶部分可以通过智能系统在不同使用场景下进行变化和收缩。这意味着它可以轻松适应多样化的需求，无论是家庭出游、露天活动还是城市通勤。尤其令人印象深刻的是，尽管拥有出色的可变功能，这款房车仍然满足了常规MPV车的尺寸标准，使其能够在城市环境中自如穿梭。这种多功能的设计不仅提高了车辆的可用性，还为用户提供了更广泛的生活体验。

The technologies involved in these cases are being used in subsequent projects that we are working on, including in areas such as very small homes and caravans. We are in the process of secondary validation and demonstration, and are making some progress. Through these practices and explorations, we hope to discover the innovative potential of building technologies for architectural spaces and to offer more possibilities for future design and practice.

We have also recently teamed up with a well-recognized and well-known vehicle brand to develop and design an innovative Triple Extension Lift-Top Variable Caravan. What’s particularly impressive is that, despite its outstanding variable functionality, the caravan still meets the dimensional criteria of a conventional MPV vehicle, allowing it to navigate the urban environment with ease. This versatile design not only enhances the vehicle’s usability, but also provides users with a wider range of living experiences.

首先，我们是一个多元化的团队，不仅专注于城市更新项目，也涉足其他领域。其次，我们渴望未来建筑的突破和发展，这也是为什么我们工作室的名称更偏向于浪漫主义。因此，我们认为虚拟空间和AI设计等新技术将对我们的社会和未来生活产生深远影响，进而反过来影响我们对未来建筑空间设计的发展方向。这一点非常重要，因为我们所创造的物质空间的核心目的是为了服务人类的生活，而人类的生活将受到这些技术的深刻影响。

在这样的环境下，建筑空间必将经历大规模的更新和迭代。虽然我们对未来的发展方向并没有明确的答案，但我们对此充满激情和期待。我们期待着未来的探索，以及技术对建筑空间的影响如何塑造人们的社会生活。

Firstly, we are a diverse team, not only focusing on urban regeneration projects but also dabbling in other areas. Secondly, we aspire to breakthroughs and developments in the future of architecture, which is why the name of our studio is tinged with romanticism. As such, we believe that new technologies including virtual spaces and AI design will have a profound impact on our society and future lives, which in turn will influence the direction we take for the design of future architectural spaces. This is important because the core purpose of the physical spaces we create is to serve the lives of humans, who will be siginificantly affected by these technologies.

In such an environment, architectural spaces are bound to undergo massive renewal and iteration. While now we don’t have a clear answer as to where the future is headed, we are passionate and excited about it. We look forward to exploring the future and how the impact of technology on the built space will shape people’s social lives.

Future Prospects

01. 探索教育建筑
Exploring educational architecture

我们过去已经进行了一系列学校类项目，因此我们非常期待在学校和教育建筑领域能够进行更多的尝试和探索。我们的团队主要具备教育背景，对于教育建筑有着特殊的情感和认同。

其次，我们希望在教育建筑领域取得突破。尽管在政策法规和规范的要求下，教育建筑的设计相对严格，但我们仍然积极参与竞赛，以探索未来中国教育建筑发展的可能性。我们希望能够在现有的框架内，寻求创新的设计思路，提供与时代和教育需求相适应的建筑解决方案。

通过参与竞赛和进行探索，我们希望为教育建筑注入新的理念和设计方法，推动教育环境的创新和改进。我们相信教育建筑的设计不仅仅是满足功能需求，更是为学生和教职员工创造一个启发思考、促进交流和融合的理想场所。

Having worked on a number of school projects in the past, we expect to expand our practice in the field of educational architecture. Our team has a solid background in education and has a special affinity and identification with educational architecture.

Secondly, we hope to make a breakthrough in this field. Although the design of educational projects is relatively strict under the requirements of policies, regulations and codes, we still actively participate in competitions to explore the possibilities of the future development of educational architecture in China. We hope to seek innovative design ideas within the existing framework and provide architectural solutions that are relevant to the times and educational needs.

02. 计划与目标
Plans and objectives

在当前行业形势下逐渐趋缓的情况下，我们致力于保持事务所的稳定性和协调性。为此，我们计划进一步整合内部资源，包括学术研究团队、设计实践团队和活动策划团队，以实现彼此之间的相互辅助和互补推动。通过整合这三个团队的力量，我们可以更好地利用各自的专长和经验，从而在设计和实践中取得更好的效果。学术研究团队的知识和洞察力可以为项目提供理论支持和创新思维，设计实践团队的经验和技能可以将理念转化为可实施的解决方案，而活动策划团队的策划和组织能力可以促进团队内外的交流和合作。

同时，我们将积极探索和优化新的技术在设计实践中的应用。随着科技的不断发展，新的技术手段和工具不断涌现，它们为我们提供了更多创新和优化的机会。我们将持续关注行业的前沿技术趋势，积极应用适合的技术来提升设计质量和效率，同时也为客户提供更好的解决方案。

We are committed to maintaining the studio’s stability and coherence in the current industry climate, which is gradually slowing down. To this end, we plan to further integrate our internal resources, including the academic research team, the design team and the event planning team, in order to complement and drive each other forward. By combining the strengths of these three teams, we can better utilize their respective expertise and experience to achieve better results in design and practice. The knowledge and insight of the academic research team can provide theoretical support and innovative thinking for projects, the experience and skills of the design team can translate ideas into implementable solutions, while the planning and organizational skills of the event planning team can facilitate communication and collaboration within and outside the team.

In the meantime, we will aggressively explore and optimize the use of new technologies in our design practice. As technology continues to evolve and new technological tools emerge, they provide us with more opportunities for innovation and optimization. In the future, we will continue to keep an eye on cutting-edge technology trends in the industry and apply suitable technologies to improve design quality and efficiency, while also providing better solutions for our clients.
