The building: The house is built on a hillside, and it is located in a quiet residential neighborhood – Normal Heights in San Diego. The back of the house is facing a valley and the front of the house is facing the street and the driveway. There are three floors in total; There is the main floor, the basement and second floor. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms, two living rooms and two kitchens. Each floor has a balcony facing the valley.
This project is an interior fit-out for a newly built single family home. The design intent is to create a modern minimalistic home that blurs the boundary of indoor and outdoor living. The house is essentially a vacation home. It’s a place for family and friend reunion, place for vacation and also a place to decompress and to appreciate slow living. The whole building is solar powered and the exterior is cladded with recyclable rain screen. The client is the home-owner, who is a dentist and a dental business owner who travels around the world and collects art and home decors. The space is tends to leave empty to receive future discovered items. The design team has a vision to bring dreams to life. They interpreted the clients’ needs into design to create a unique living space. The house will not look like a typical San Diego house the client said. It should be clean, simple and bright. Necessary amenities are needed, but no clutters will be displayed. Each guest room represents a traveling or living experience.

There are large windows and glass walls on each floor allow sunlight to come in. The large folding glass doors blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. White painted walls are seen throughout the house. The white walls make the house look like a canvas, or a gallery, there is always an empty wall for artworks the home-owner bring home from his world travels. White oak flooring is used on all the public areas and the bedrooms, to create a natural and cozy feeling. Each guest room and bathroom design is catered to client’s needs and personal taste. The décor of each bedroom represents a cultural element that tights back to his personal living experiences. The home-owner lived in Japan for over 7 years, and one guest room is specifically designed to mimic a Japanese tatami bed and a meditation spot.

A build-in kitchen island can sit 5 – 6 people at the same time for dinning. Behind the kitchen is a pantry room that is divided by a full ceiling height glass wall, glazed with frosted glass and steel frame. Client doesn’t cook at home but often host party by using catering service. The large island becomes a party prep-working surface. The opposite side of the kitchen is a TV wall made out of concrete panels and electronic fireplace.
