Appreciation towards An-design Architects for providing the following description:

成都宽窄巷子历史文化保护区是成都市文殊院、大慈寺、宽窄巷子三片历史文化保护区之一，也是唯一以传统民居为主要特色的保护区。

成都宽窄巷子位于成都市中心区，天府广场西侧约1000米，为青羊区所辖。其中宽巷子、窄巷子、井巷子三条巷子所辖地段为重点保护区。规划保护与更新建筑面积约60000平方米，其中完整保护的传统民居类型建筑约20000平方米。

Kuanzhai Xiangzi is one of the 3 Key Conservation Areas in Chengdu. It is also an only area which recorded rich Architectural and Social characteristic feature of Residential Building from Qing Dynasty till now.

This Project”s core area is about 6.6 ha. Proposed Building area (above ground) is about 70,000 sq.m.. Original building constructions are wood and most of them are in bad condition. As an area which maintained huge amount of wood buildings sitting at the heart of city, it reflects a history from flourish in the past and hard time now. Architects look at it in a dynamic way and tried to apply this concept in each stage of the projects.

宽窄巷子为清代少城（满城）兵丁胡同中仅存的两条，区内多为清末民初时期的木结构民居建筑，基本保持了百年前的历史风貌。随着市场经济的快速发展与房地产业高歌猛进，历史街区的生存环境与生存状态令人担忧。在成都市政府的大力支持下，遵循建设部有关城市历史街区的紫线保护条例，规划设计在严格保护的原则基础上进行详细的测绘、调研，制定保护、维修、复建、更新的办法。

研究宽窄巷子的历史文化就会发现，它代表了成都市“两江环抱，三城相重”的城市格局，代表了两千年少城文化和三百年满城文化的传承，代表了北方胡同与川西民居的结合，代表了程度平原的市井生活特征。

所以要保护一个真实的宽窄巷子，就要明确原真性的保护理念，即街巷——院落——建筑——装饰四位一体的整体保护，既要保护原有的物质形态，同时还要发扬地方的精神特质。宽窄巷子的精华就在于街巷格局与院落空间，从清代的布局严谨、整齐划一，到逐渐变化的丰富多样。设计中重点保护街巷及组成街巷的外观风貌，包括门头、外墙、装饰物、树木等，同时保留原有的院落划分，使整个街区依然按照原有格局分布。实施过程中大部分建筑采用传统的木结构形式和传统施工工艺，根据测绘图纸落架重修；充分利用原有建筑材料与装饰构件；妥善保护土墙、砖墙、门头、构件等不需更换的部位。在科学的实施策略指导下，采用了保留、回迁、合作、统规自建等方式，充分体现了居民参与的原则。而合理的商业规划使得成都最闲适优雅的生活氛围得以展现。

在五年的实践过程中，设计重点研究了历史街区的保护方法与策略，规划与建筑设计中的消防问题，木结构和砖木结构保护加固的技术措施，传统木结构的承重与抗震设计，传统民居建筑的保温节能设计等等。特别是在现行规范无法完全指导的情况下，既要保证传统建筑形式与风貌，还要保证现代使用功能的安全与舒适。经过努力与坚持，我们完成了从研究、规划、测绘、方案、建筑施工图、景观、商业规划、室内设计知道全过程的设计。

规划研究与设计力图在三方面所突破与创新：

⒈探寻少城（满城）的历史根源，发掘少城的独特文化内涵；
宽窄巷子为满清时期满城中八条官街四十二条兵丁胡同中仅存的一部分。研究宽窄巷子的历史，必须要研究成都满城的历史。清初，清政府为了巩固地方统治，在许多城市实行旗汉分治，单独修建供旗兵及家属居住的满城，如太原、西安、福州、武汉、成都、兰州等地。直至清朝灭亡，满城才与周围城市融合，随着新中国成立直至改革开放，城市建设的同时也使得各地的满城逐渐失去原有独特的格局与风貌。成都的满城是中国目前仅存的保留清初道路格局的地方，鱼脊骨状的路网完整的保存下来，更难能可贵的是，宽窄巷子还依稀可见清末民初的建筑风格。这为我们研究满城的历史、研究近代建筑的变革、研究清代兵营格局、研究近代社会生活提供了样本。所以少城（满城）文化是宽窄巷子历史文化的基础与精髓，充分研究其本质、整理其脉络、发掘其内涵将会提升整个保护区乃至成都市的文化品位。

⒉摸索历史街区城市更新的办法，达到社会均衡效益与公平的原则；城市中的改造不仅仅是单一片区的改造，而要肩负促进城市更新与激发城市活力的功能。对居住人口的控制与土地性质的重新确立都是有效控制手段，强化政策引导与社会资金扶植，帮助保持传统的生活方式，循序渐进的有机更新。

⒊建立川西木结构建筑的维修、改造模式，为其他地方的木结构建筑在现代功能使用提供思路。宽窄巷子历史文化保护区所展现的各个历史时期的痕迹非常清晰，充分反映了近三百年来川西民居建筑艺术的演变，而这种演变也正是我们探寻的可持续发展下去的脉络，并可以在今后的城市中心历史保护区的保护与更新中延伸开来。而木结构是中国传统的建造方式，有几千年的历史与经验，在现代社会中保持这种传统建造手段，同时利用新的技术弥补木结构的不利因素，推广木结构建筑的保护、维修、利用、更新的新模式。通过规划设计，改变这一地区单一的居住功能造成的城市功能不均，以休闲、餐饮、娱乐等现代功能赋予传统建筑以新的生命力，成为成都市最具有历史风貌的时尚休闲旅游区。

Research / Concept / Idea / Operation:

1. SITE: Kuanzhai Xiangzi is the aggregate of wood residential construction which sited close to the center of big city in an unwontedly way. Different from the conservation of countryside or historic village, this site had to face an environment which was undergoing a rapid change period. Architects had to think about creating a sustainable relationship between people and substantial environment while the site always inevitably impacted by the urbanized surroundings. Today, urbanism is accelerating in many countries, the design group tried to find some executable way for Traditional City Fragments Conservation through this project.

2. HYPOSTASIS: This project is not to protect a Culture Relic, but should focus on the project”s sustainability. One of the most important characters of this project is the independence and integrality of its architectural elements that can reflect evolvement of West Sichuan Residential Building Type during almost 300-year-period. As it shows, equally dialog among the diverse figures provides us a good foundation to continue its culture context. New concept should be added as a necessary node of the whole history course in an equal way and the project would become a really functional one which takes city responsibility as its forerunners.

3. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: In this project, architects always keep their eyes on the social responsibility that the project should take. “Conservation” always implies both “protection”and “reform”. By looking into the interaction of different factors in the project, such as social policy, fund allocation, plan of land usage and residences” awakening on conservation, a necessary balance should be set up among them. This project would show the coordination between residences” spontaneous action which shows a course of quantitative change and developer” planning that could be considered as a course of qualitative change.

4.TECHNOLOGY: In this project, architects tried to deal with normal residential building in a sustainable way. Various technology and material were considered and used.
