Appreciation towards Hooft Graafland for providing the following description:

Hooft Graafland, this 33-year-old Dutch photographer creates work in some of the most inhospitable spots on Earth. Her works are different from those published in National Geographic. Her photographs are not simply exercises in composition: they are also saturated with a distinctly Surrealist aesthetic. Using a surrealist language of intriguing visual jokes, she wittily alludes to her anthropological interests and environmental concerns.
In one, black hats erupt from a ravine and hover mysteriously in the air (in fact, they are held in place by wires). In another, white balloons spiral across the surface of a lake. Very often the photographer’s intervention involves introducing brightly coloured elements: red and yellow balloons in a mountain landscape, yellow and red carpet on the cracked land, women with pink cotton candy…

In Hooft Graafland’s work you find a combination of straight photographic practice with performance and sculpture in which she constantly refers to a more profound cultural discourse of her surroundings. It’s a result of her encounter with the local culture.

For the series ‘Soft Horizons’ Scarlett Hooft Graafland made extensive travels to the highlands of Bolivia during the last 11 years. During these trips she worked together with Bolivian performance artist Gastón Ugalde and some of his assistants. They would make long travels for weeks to work on the installations in the salt desert Uyuni and its surroundings.

One of the works made in the Salar desert is‘My White Knight’(2011), a big white truck carrying a pile of salt that was exploded by dynamite. In Bolivia there is a big mining industry and dynamite you can buy even on the markets. It took a long time to figure out how to use the dynamite, after many try-outs Hooft Graafland was able to make the photo.

Hooft Graafland

Hooft Graafland photographs with an analogue medium format camera. Afterwards she prints directly from the negative. She prefers this old way of producing the work, even though it is much more time consuming then the digital process. “Actually I do not feel the urge to manipulate my images in a digital way. I never felt attracted to those tools. Maybe because then the options would feel like infinite. I like to work in a framework with the possibilities that are on the site. That also defines the work, and limits as well.”
