DIVERTICAL is a new body of cut paper of rollercoaster forms inspired by my relocation from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles last year. It’s named after the world’s tallest water rollercoaster.
Taking inspiration from the overwhelming nature of a cross-country move, my new cut paper works are predominated by various formations of rollercoasters winding their way throughout the pieces and often forming the perimeter of the cuttings. Embedded within each work – contrasting with the chaos of the rollercoaster and the natural and urban elements that fill the work – is evidence of a small balancing act, depicted in the form of a tightrope walker, a cyclist, or a surfer.
In these works, I also draw parallels between one’s romantic relationship and our relationship with nature. While seeking balance, eternity, stability, and harmony in both relationships, the journey we take on are often complex, dramatic, changing, and lopsided. But there is also incredible beauty, energy, richness, and even whimsy in chaos and imperfections through the ups and downs, and trial and error.
I hand cut each piece using an X-Acto knife and work exclusively with Chinese rice paper. Chinese rice paper is the first art material I used since age 10 practicing Chinese calligraphy and it’s also eco-friendly.
These new works are some of the most significant works I’ve created to date for they mark a defining period of my life.
