Who is your favourite architect? Why?
My favorite architect is changing with my deeper understanding of architecture. Zaha Hadid lets me know that building could be light and dynamic,Kango Kuma’s architectural theory also attracts me a lot. Chinese architect Li Xiaodong shows his respect to the native context in his project of Bridge School.
What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?
My university is a typical school where uses a conventional way to teach us architecture. Most of our tutors give priority to the research of construction, material and technology, and that gives me a solid foundation of the architecture theory and practice.
What have you gained during the MAD internship?
I gain a lot of skills and experience from these days when I was an intern in MAD. Fortunately, I have the chance to take part in the Moscow financial center project, and witness how Mr. Ma do design and how to realize a concept. He has a special understanding of the nature and will give response to it in his further architectural design, which impresses me a lot. Meanwhile, working with these talented architects also broadens my horizon.
What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Any suggestion?
In my point of view, some architects engage themselves into architectural design, but there is still a large number of architects who focus on the construction of numerous buildings for dwelling. Some disadvantages such as the neglect of urban context and buildings in different cities lookingalike were created by mass construction. But the fast pace of development also carries opportunities for young architects. The suggestion for me is that I should clear the shortage of myself and try to consider the environment factors and context when I do architectural designs.
What is your dream?
I hope I can set up my own studio in the future, and try my best to do the project I am interested in.
What would you do if you were not an architect?
I would be a racing car driver, I was a big fan of formula 1 and my idol was Kimi•Raikkonen in my childhood. I like the speed and the sound of F1 carswhich can inspire my passion in a short time.
What is your dream project?
I can design and build an ideal house for me and my family.
What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?
THE SPACE CREATED BY PAPER FOLDING and MOUNTAIN CITY are my favorite projects, as I begin these designs from the perspective of sensitivity instead of data analysis. This means a turning point of my architectural view. And the consideration of material and sustainable design help me understanding the architecture deeply.
[曲折之”间”] 和 [山城]，这两个方案是我突破传统的理性，以感性为出发点做的设计。同时在设计中对材料技术和可持续的考虑也让我对建筑有了更深刻的认识。
Project 1 -The Student Activity and Art Centre Design
A student activity center in Lanzhou University of Technology where has a series of old buildings with traditional Soviet style. So the main consideration of this design is how to coordinate the new art center with the context of existing old buildings. The process of design can be divided into three parts:
1. Preciseness prophase research: the characteristic of site, human activities and other factors.
2. Design processing: use diagram to find the logic of architectural design, and then go deeper.
3. The generation of buildings：analyze the dialog among the building, the environment and the requirement of potential users, then give out
the final proposal.
Project 2 -The Contemporary Art Center Design
曲折之“间”THE SPACE CREATED BY PAPER FOLDING
A contemporary art center in Lanzhou CBD district. Thanks for Zhang Yifan’s instruction. This project wants to evoke citizen’s humanistic solicitude in a CBD district where fulfilled with high-rise buildings. The site is one of the greenlands in this area. As to preserve this cherish green space where people can get access to nature after working or shopping, the main space of art center is designed as an underground space. Redesigning this landscape in vertical direction and putting different functions in different levels, which creates profound space cater for variety of activities.
Project 3 -The Golf Service Center Design
This design’s origin is from Buckminster Fuller’s “Dymaxion” theory which stands for the words dynamic, maximum, and tension. Proceeding the eco-design practices is based on the idea of low resource input and low energy consumption. This project is service center for golf course, so I try tolet the building give people a sense of dynamic. Give a main circulation stream connecting each part and give tourists abundant space experience bycontrolling the scale of different function area. At last, the 6 bubbles can also work independently and any one of them can automatically shut downby analyzing the frequency of usage at a specific point in time to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.
Project 4 -The Landscape Building Design
山城 MOUNTAIN CITY
A landscape building in river side forest park. Collaborators: Guo Yue.
The subject of this project is to analyze the relationship between public and privacy. The idea comes from the nest of eagle on the side of cliffs. The traditional way of people appreciating nature scenery is purely open to the public, so tourists may be disturbed by the noise comes from neighbors. Some people use tents in their camp to get a privacy space. However, this kind of space isolates people from the public communication. The aim of
this design is to analyze people’s activities and creates a series of public space, privacy space and semi public and semi private space to communicate with people’s subconscious.
Meanwhile, the inner space is a nature scenery experience center; the bridge connecting different units goes through the forest and guides touriststo appreciate the nature beauty from different perspectives.
