London based architects, MWAI, have recently completed the refurbishment of an apartment on the top floor of a Victorian terrace in Little Venice to suit the changing spatial requirements of a young family. Clever use of controlled geometry and pattern transforms the flat into a light, spacious and distinctive family home.

At the heart of the project is the beautifully crafted entrance hall. The space provides the occupant their first impression of the home and all other spaces connect off it. Soft textured polished plaster in a carefully controlled linear pattern transforms the space into a calming environment that leaves a lasting impression throughout the remainder of the house.

Close collaboration with the joinery company – Andrew Morton, sees that this attention to detail is also evident in the bespoke joinery pieces. The clean lines and simple forms are softened through the use of patterned timber. The images above show how the soft tones and sheens in the timber add a touch of femininity to the dress space. Here the strict structural geometries seen in the panelling and tiling give way to a more loose and playful response in the use of pattern.

In the bathroom again the controlled minimalism is given character and charm through the clever use of chevron marble tiles wrapping the floor and rear shower wall. The soft textures of the marble are given geometric rigour through the sharp lines of the chevron. This is further emphasised by controlling the marble placement so that the shades fade across the room from white to grey.

Through the use of geometry and pattern the minimal spaces are given character and a fresh face. The sharpness is softened through the choice of materials and the geometric rigour that they have undergone. This duality between the sharpness of the geometry and softness of texture and tone results in a beautiful and enchanting family home.
