9 September 2026 – The Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent (CCA Tashkent), a flagship initiative of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF), is now open to the public. Led by ACDF Chairperson Gayane Umerova, the Centre is the first institution of its kind in Central Asia, providing a permanent home for contemporary art, research and public engagement in Uzbekistan while positioning the country within global contemporary art discourse.

Originally built in 1912 as a diesel station and depot for Tashkent’s first tramway line, the Centre occupies one of the city’s most significant industrial heritage buildings. Designed by Wilhelm Heinzelmann, the architect behind landmarks including the Palace of Grand Duke Romanov and the Treasury Chamber, the site remained part of Tashkent’s electricity network for more than a century before being entrusted to ACDF in 2019 as part of its long-term cultural development strategy. Under the direction of ACDF Chairperson Gayane Umerova, the building has been transformed by acclaimed French architects Studio KO into a permanent home for contemporary art, carrying its industrial heritage forward while creating a new cultural landmark for Tashkent.

The architects followed a careful and deliberate philosophy of intervention, respecting the utilitarian yet ornate beauty of the existing site while adding layers that speak to contemporary needs. The main diesel station – now the central exhibition space – remains largely untouched, with early 20th century Imperial-era bricks meticulously renovated to preserve the existing identity of the building. What was once the station’s administrative hub now houses a bookshop and library featuring an archive of books focused on art history, world literature, and Oriental studies. The courtyard offers spaces for gathering, workshops and public programming including an outdoor cinema that will host regular screenings. The renovation process has involved significant partnerships with local artisans, including developing a unique concrete mix made from local materials and commissioning bespoke tiles from the Rakhimov family ceramics studio in Tashkent.

Inaugural Exhibition: Hikmah

The exhibition also foregrounds artistic traditions from Uzbekistan and Karakalpakstan. Historic works from the collection of the State Museum of Arts of Karakalpakstan form an integral part of Hikmah, placing contemporary commissions in dialogue with one of Central Asia’s most significant artistic collections. Presented in collaboration with the museum, works by Vladimir Pan (b. 1956), Bakhtiyar Saipov (b. 1956) and Daribay Saipov (b. 1961) reflect the richness and diversity of Karakalpak artistic traditions. Pan’s Untitled (1981), a contemplative gypsum portrait, explores cultural and material memory; Bakhtiyar Saipov’s Meditation (1989) is an intimate study of introspection in clay; while Daribay Saipov’s carved wooden column (1978-79) and door (1983-84) celebrate the enduring traditions of Karakalpak and Uzbek woodcarving.

Responding to the layered architectural history of the building, the exhibition creates dialogues between contemporary commissions and Uzbek artistic traditions. At its heart, the Centre is a space for dialogue: between artists and audiences, local histories and global ideas, where the past becomes a catalyst for future possibilities.”

驻留计划与延伸
Residency Programme and Expansion

Beyond its inaugural exhibition programme, CCA Tashkent will continue to expand its activities across Uzbekistan through new residencies, research initiatives and international collaborations. Since October 2024, the CCA Tashkent Artist Residency programme has offered artists and creatives the opportunity to research, develop and present new work in Tashkent, with access to workshops, specialist facilities and curatorial support.

Dutch-Moroccan couturier and artist Mohamed Benchellal, a former CCA Tashkent Artist Residency participant, will present MONUMENTAL / “Sculpting Past Tomorrow” at the State National Museum of Uzbekistan in Tashkent. Commissioned by ACDF Chairperson Gayane Umerova and developed during his residency, the new body of sculptural works draws on Uzbekistan’s monumental architecture, historic sites, landscapes and modernist heritage through Benchellal’s sculptural approach to couture. The exhibition continues a project first presented at the National Museum of Qatar.

The CCA Tashkent Artist Residency programme will expand to Samarkand, welcoming practitioners from a wide range of creative disciplines to spend time in both cities. While the residency in Tashkent focuses on artistic production, the Samarkand programme will place greater emphasis on research, exploration and engagement with the city’s rich history, cultural heritage and local communities.

Alongside the residency programme, CCA Tashkent launched the AA Visiting School: Climate Cartographies in Samarkand (4-14 September), a new collaboration between CCA Tashkent and the Architectural Association (AA), London. Combining public lectures, site visits and hands-on design workshops, the programme will bring together architecture and urban studies students, early-career architects, artists and curators to explore new approaches to mapping and interpreting environmental change. Together, these initiatives reflect CCA Tashkent’s commitment to supporting artistic production, critical inquiry and international exchange, while creating new connections between Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage and contemporary creative practice.

The Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent (CCA Tashkent) opens to the public on 6 September 2026 as a new initiative by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF), led by its chairperson, Gayane Umerova. Launched as part of the country’s wider investment in arts and culture, CCA Tashkent is dedicated to contemporary art, dialogue, and public engagement, with a year-round calendar of exhibitions, residencies, interdisciplinary events and public programming. Located in the heart of Old Tashkent in a 1912 building that once housed a tram depot and diesel station and has been thoughtfully transformed by world-renowned French architecture firm Studio KO, the centre draws on the city’s legacy as a historic crossroads for cultural exchange, connecting local perspectives with global ideas. Committed to amplifying Uzbek voices and stories in the world’s most influential cultural arenas, the first international exhibition presented by CCA Tashkent, Instruments of the Mind is a landmark exhibition by pioneering contemporary artist Vyacheslav Akhunov at Palazzo Franchetti in Venice. Open until November 2026, it is presented as an official Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

ACDF commissioned the Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent (CCA Tashkent), opening to the public on 6 September 2026. Other major architectural projects include the new National Museum of Uzbekistan by Tadao Ando in Tashkent, and the Jadids’ Legacy Museum, where Lina Ghotmeh is restoring a 19th-century house in Bukhara to tell the story of the Jadids’ reformist movement. ACDF’s ongoing research project “Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI” has been documented through publications with Rizzoli New York (2024) and Lars Müller Publishers (2025); in 2026, ten Tashkent Modernist buildings were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, the youngest properties ever to receive this status.

ACDF spearheaded the Bukhara Biennial which drew over 1.8 million visitors to its 2025 inaugural edition, with the next edition running 3 September–21 November 2027. It also oversees the Aral Culture Summit, uniting global experts on ecological and cultural renewal, with its second edition set for spring 2027. In Samarkand, ACDF hosted the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference (30 October–13 November 2025), underscoring Uzbekistan’s role in global cultural heritage dialogue. Capacity-building remains central to ACDF’s mission, with artist residency and curatorial programmes running in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara, alongside the Aral School in Nukus, a new ecological education initiative.

Internationally, ACDF has commissioned the Uzbekistan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale Arte and Architettura since 2021 – most recently The Aural Sea (2026) – as well as Uzbekistan’s participation in Expo 2025 Osaka. It has also overseen When Apricots Blossom at Milan Design Week 2026 and Instruments of the Mind at Palazzo Franchetti in Venice (open until November 2026), and is partnering with London’s Science Museum to spotlight the scientific contributions of Islamic cultures.
