At a shopping centre in a redeveloped residential area at Sydney city fringe, facing busy road with heavy car traffic, adjacent to carpark entry, there is our site for Taiwanese restaurant, Wu-Gu. Shopping centre management requested a restaurant of open nature, whilst restaurant owner requested a space for comfortable food enjoyment.
▼ 封闭与开放，餐厅的两种状态，Opened or Closed, the Two Way Restaurant
If we open up the façade with bifold doors and furnish the footpath with tables and chairs, a restaurant of open nature can be created. However it would not be comfortable for food enjoyment amongst busy traffic. Obvious choices were 1. Completely close the façade and furnish the footpath; or 2. Completely open up the façade and furnish the footpath. But we felt the degree of openness of façade directly impacts level of comfort for patrons, and we considered possibility to design a restaurant allowing for dining experience similar to that at one’s own private balcony; not completely inside nor outside but somewhere in-between.
▼ 开放与封闭间的平衡点，An in-between space
We designed façade box units on castors, with checkered patterns at seating eye height. Above which we placed sashless windows to open upwards. By swinging open the facade boxes, a cozy “threshold” zone is created between the boxes; this way when patrons dine at the “threshold” zone, they are somehow protected, and can enjoy their food without being bothered by busy traffic around the restaurant.
▼ 随着结构单元的开启，在其间自然形成了一个个舒适的过渡地带，a cozy “threshold” zone is created between the boxes
▼ 室内空间，Interior Space
The choice was neither completely open nor close the façade; it is something inbetween. By creating a buffering “threshold” zone, people can enjoy dining outdoor more comfortably, and we believe people would enjoy such opportunity especially when weather is great in Sydney. By offering this opportunity, Wu-Gu can become the second dining room for local residences with dining experience unlike others.
