MAD no doubt is one of the most recognized architectural practices in China and worldwide. Every year,MAD receives countless job and internship applications. To be able to work at MAD will definitely enrichyour career as even though the people working here might have been lucky, but are undeniablyoutstanding. What could possibly be on the minds of the MAD interns?
Name: Bosen Li
Educational Institution: Harbin Institute of Technology
Who is your favourite architect? Why?
Coop Himmelblau can be seen as the first architect of my enlightenment. Their passionate project really impressed me when I began to design. I like their viewpoint which jump out the limitation of the architectural production and bring the spirit of buildings to others.
What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?
Harbin Institute of Technology is getting better and better. There is a good atmosphere among all students, which give us a lot of opportunity to receive and acquaint more new stuff. People in different grades and major like to communicate with each others which helps us emerge more new ideas. And now, there are a lot of talented and hardworking students.
What have you gained during the MAD internship?
Working in MAD is intense and fulfilling. I exactly received many help and inspiration in my internship when I cooperated with others. There are so many people with interesting thinkings and some fortuitous things happened everyday , which always make my working hours colorful and exciting.
What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment?
I think Chinese economic and political status make here be a unique market. Everyone seems to have lots of opportunities, but everyone is limited in a rule. Although we are very good at analyzing others’ program, we should pay more attention on reviewing what we did before and what we got in our culture and civilization, which means that Chinese architects should disseminate their works combining our traditional viewpoint with modern method –Of course, it is not only about the architecture, but also about social development. Following the development of society, architecture will be more advanced as well.
What is your dream?
TO know every aspect of our world as much as possible, and always insist of my individual viewpoint and convey it to the masses. On the other hand, like most people, I look forward to live a place which is designed by myself in the future.
What would you do if you were not an architect?
Engage in film production or other related occupations.
What is your dream project?
My dream project is to cause the topic even though it has finished several years, and also cannot be defined as a specific project.
What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?
I think the most interesting project may be the first one. It produce more interesting result to put the old settings and the new forms together. But I cannot say it ‘favorite’,because actually, I have so many limitations and confusions when I focus on my portfolio, and I hope to solve them in my future study.
Project ROOF derives from our attitudes towards available buildings. In what form will those valuable historic buildings survive in modern cities? In Project ROOF, I provide a new perspective that these ancient buildings can be matched with modern non-linear buildings. I get this idea from a shape formation test about the stretching of chewing gem. In the test, due to different structures of available buildings it matches to and different stretching power it receives, the chewing gem forms many interesting shapes. Furthermore, the distinct nature of chewing gem makes the whole structure an intact load-carrying body and guarantees the stability of the non-linear building. At last some functional changes will be added to this structure.
This tally mode, in which the new building is constructed on the roof of the old one, presents us with fresh feelings. By so doing, people might use the old building as an underground space of the new one. Philosophically speaking, the growing trend of old architecture is greatly oppressed by new building systems which, finally, burst into a brand new style. In modern cities, a strong self-satisfying sense of the old architecture can be clearly felt.
The project of SMOG is come from a very accidental observation. When I saw smokers exhaling smoke, I thought why the building can’t be flexible and impact like smoke? In the topic of the integrated design encourages us to do free creation, I tried to use the instability of this kind of gradient change to restore functions of use of a high-rise building. Just like the change of smoke exhaled from mouth, this high-rise building must exist a kind of unstable growth so that the transition and diversity of space were brought. There is a kind of bailment in the spiritual level behind instability, because the huge volume is different from our existing cold cities,so that this exaggerated sense of freedom became peugeot of new cities.
People usually use special shape to realize a particular spirit. For a long time, we are accustomed to and good at making the works have more concentricity. Perhaps now, we can try to turn around the ideas to break up habitual elements.
This public art sculpture breaks up our habitual constitution mode. Most importantly, light is the main constitution. Shooting straight beam by xenon lamp, shape interlaced form by interspersed light beam. However, only the light is not enough.
Titanium in this nest is another core element. On the one hand, it plays a role of structure externally, on the other hand, the shuttling beam light interacts with the titanic reflection effect to form more complex light gradation.
For the location characteristics, the traffic situation in the rotary district of the museum center is very complex. Pedestrians usually walk through this core area of traffic. Therefore, I thought the best way to realize using functions in this center is to gather stream of people. Hence in the lower section of this nest is small semi-enclosed square. Due to the natural composition of nest form, this square is filled in by nest elements to form a new recreation architecture opuscule in the front of museum.
The scheme of cuttlefish is come from pure idealism conception. When we place a moving point in the field, and cooperate with surrounding environment to produce different forms constantly, how such building to exist in the district? I do not want to complete this project by fully depending on the means of parameterization, but add subjective control. I hope this project can present stage changes of growth, to produce more complex results during the course of continuous growing and forming. Regard the whole block as construction sources to form the result of complete motion structure.
Municipal solid waste landfill Asuwei is located in the west outer Changping District,Beijing. In the last decades, Asuwei served the municipal refuse of Beijing, this waste landfill was at the mercy of geographical factors without introducing facilities for refuse burning. Therefore, the practice in itself of burying refuse into underground without burning is a factor of ecological hazard. Therefore, after the landfill was moved out, this field can’t quickly restore fresh and green. Revive the active soil and purify groundwater resources at the same time, this scheme focuses on showing this ecological natural process of selection from lifeless to have life.
The part of underground was developed into polluted exhibition halls and museum, which was used to remind the future generations to take care of our planet. The harm to planet is highly visible.
Beijing Asuwei municipal solid waste landfill is continued to be utilized at present. But compared foreign advanced refuse treatment methods, the mean of burning can’t be adopted is the main mechanical damage. Some plans of moving Asuwei landfill are widely circulated online at present, through filed visit, the scale operation of this refuse dump is normal, but there are some damages are truly produced to surrounding ecological environment. This design with an eye to the future situation after the refuse dump was moved out, including a series of tactics. First of all, the wastes are not allowed to dump here, but do on-site burning and refine energy by mechanical means, to provide for internal use of field or to transmit to other villages. The whole field is regarded asmechanical equipment. The spatial inspiration is come from space advocating of “Transparency”written by Colin Rowe, to realize a field between linearity and nonlinearity through the means of mechanization.
I have a thought on landscape design. Does the landscape design only mean planting a tree? I have a bolder thought of creating a field with collective mindset and new using rules.
