Launched in 2012 by artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen at London’s Tate Modern, Little Sun’s social business brings clean, reliable, affordable energy to the 1.1 billion people in the world living without electricity while raising awareness for energy access and climate action worldwide.
In 2019, the little sun project continues to emit light and heat in multiple areas around the globe, so let’s look back at the highlights of the little sun’s year in chronological order.
一月 | January
In Ghana, children in a village outside of Tamale received our solar lamps thanks to a fundraising campaign organized by Amaraaba Ghana.
二月 | February
We were thrilled to work with Caritas Lebanon again this year, to tackle the issue of unreliable electricity and raise awareness for renewable energy among children and youth in Lebanon.

Little Suns reached the districts of Sikasso and Yorosso, Mali, where Save the Children distributed 3,456 Little Suns as part of the Basic Education program, aiming at giving children the needed tools to ensure their success at school.
三月 | March
March was all about raising awareness for the climate emergency and transition to renewable energy, while distributing lights to communities who need them the most. In Berlin, we went to the streets demanding an end to fossil fuels and shone a light on climate action for Earth Hour.
Meanwhile on the African continent, Little Suns made their way to school children in Rwanda, as well as communities affected by Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe.

The Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue was kicked off with an exhibition from the Solar Panel Art Series at Hotel de Rome. During the event, former President of Ireland and climate justice campaigner Mary Robinson urged key stakeholders in the energy sector to act towards climate justice.

小太阳分队与合作伙伴Hand in Hand for Development一起，为卢旺达患有白化病的学生带去清洁的太阳能灯，使他们能够在家中安全地玩耍和学习。这些儿童极易受到有毒煤油烟雾和蜡烛的伤害，因此他们必须尽量待在室内以防止皮肤损伤和疾病。
More Little Suns brought light and hope to Rwanda. Working with our partner Hand in Hand for Development, we brought clean solar light to students living with albinism so that they can play and study safely at home. These children are extremely vulnerable to toxic kerosene smoke and candles, since they must spend the majority of their time inside to prevent skin damage and disease.

June was a blast: we gave a sneak peek into the solar prototypes which aim to hit IKEA stores in 2021.

In real life, Olafur’s solo exhibition at the Tate Modern in London gathered forty of his artworks and showed off almost three decades of creations. Returning seven years later to the spot of our inception.
八月 | August
From Copenhagen to Milan, Little Sun was sparkling in the fashion sphere.
九月 | September
Olafur is now a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador for Climate Action.
十月 | October
In Berlin’s Museum of Natural History, German politicians joined national NGOs to discuss climate action. They experienced a wonderful Little Sunrise next to an impressive brachiosaurus — bringing together the past, the present, and the future.
十一月 | November
