前言
Introduction

Landscape spaces created for property sales galleries often face a practical question: how can they serve the immediate needs of project presentation while also becoming lasting green spaces for nearby residents? As cities transform rapidly, the same plots may see temporary display areas built and removed in successive phases. Each round of construction reshapes the ground. While every phase serves a specific purpose, green spaces that endure and become part of community life do not always remain.

We encountered this familiar challenge again. This time, the development was expected to have greater continuity, prompting us to ask whether the project could do more than meet immediate construction needs. Could it leave a lasting gift for the surrounding community? We imagined a place where children could run and play freely, neighbours could pause during a walk, and passers-by would feel welcome to step inside—a green space that moved beyond a single function to become part of everyday life.

Project Context

Hide-and-Seek Park is located in the Cuijiadian area of Chenghua District, Chengdu. Since around 2012, the neighbourhood has gradually transformed from an industrial area with older residential quarters into a modern urban district. New housing and commercial amenities continue to take shape, reshaping the cityscape, while the old streets and lanes that once held the warmth of everyday life and memories of neighbours are quietly disappearing.

As the city becomes cleaner, more convenient and more liveable, it also needs public spaces that support its evolving urban life. We believe a city’s quality of life depends not only on new buildings and improved amenities, but also on whether people can connect with nature, play freely and encounter one another by chance. A park is more than a patch of green; it is a shared setting for everyday life and a place where community ties can grow.

场地
The Site

The surrounding urban fabric brings old and new into close proximity. On one side are newly built residential communities with towers rising overhead; on the other, abandoned factory buildings remain as quiet traces of the area’s transition from an industrial district to a place for contemporary urban life. Hetai Road borders the site to the west, while Changrong West 3rd Road runs along its southern edge. A drainage channel separates the site from the southern road. New residential developments are planned to the east and north. As these neighbouring plots are built out, the park will gradually become enclosed by urban edges on several sides.

The site slopes noticeably from northwest to southeast. Its varied terrain, together with the future building edges around it, creates an inward-looking and embracing spatial character. How could we work with the existing landform to create playful experiences while strengthening the park’s connections with the city and its communities? This became the starting point for the design.

“Bashi de Ban—Come and Play at Hide-and-Seek”|Turning Childhood Memories into a Place Identity

What kind of place could bring different groups of people and neighbouring communities together again? The answer lies in the childhood memories of Chengdu residents. “Hide-and-Seek” is a traditional local version of hide-and-seek. You can hide around a wall, inside a house, or among the neighbouring homes. Those hiding wait quietly to be found; those searching look forward to the moment of discovery. The joy lies not simply in the rules of the game, but in the stories that unfold between people. We translated this locally rooted childhood memory into the park’s identity, using Hide-and-Seek as a thread that connects spaces, activities and people.

“Winding Paths, Unexpected Delights” | Creating Opportunities for Discovery

Faced with an enclosed site and undulating terrain, we chose not to flatten the ground. Instead, we worked with the existing landform and brought the logic of hiding and seeking into the spatial experience. Slopes, hollows, ravines, grassy banks and mounds link together to create an exploratory route of changing levels and unfolding spaces. Turn a corner or climb a gentle slope, and an unexpected view or playful encounter may appear. The terrain is no longer simply a backdrop; it becomes a companion in children’s free exploration and self-invented games.

wall cat park 04b 8h1

The site is enclosed on several sides, while roads and a drainage channel limit its connection to the surrounding streets. Making the park easy to reach and allowing it to settle naturally into community life was another key design challenge. Wherever possible, we opened the park’s edges to make access easier for nearby residents, while arranging active play areas and quieter places to rest so they could coexist comfortably. Here, a wall is no longer merely a boundary dividing space. It can provide a place to hide, a passage to move through, or a seat for conversation. A wall may separate two spaces, while a small opening brings two people together. We hoped that hiding and seeking could become more than a game—that they might also create everyday opportunities for people to meet.

Hide-and-Seek — A Childhood Belonging to Everyone

Do you remember the games you played as a child? A corner wall, a patch of trees or a row of old houses could become an entire world of play. No rigid rules or purpose-built playground equipment were needed. A few children would hide, run, get found and start all over again. The game could continue from afternoon into dusk.

Memories of playing hide-and-seek

Memories of playing hide-and-seek

For many Chengdu residents, this childhood game is known as “Hide-and-Seek.” Inspired by this familiar pastime, we created a story especially for the park. Legend has it that, long ago, a group of playful cats lived in Chengdu. They chased one another, scrambled over hills and darted through the grass, leaving paw prints of different depths across the ground. Over time, these marks gathered into a rolling landscape—the beginnings of today’s Hide-and-Seek Park. This playful story also reflects our reading of the site: terrain can become a stage for games, walls can offer places to hide, and every passage can reveal something new. Rather than a space to look at from a distance or use passively, the park invites people to play, get close to nature, meet their neighbours, and rediscover the simple pleasures of everyday life.

Hide-and-Seek has grown from a childhood game into the park’s own spatial language, expressed through signage, art installations and themed destinations. Cat Pillar, Cat Island, Cat Lake, Cat Cloud, Cat Mountain and Cat Valley become clues in a game waiting to be discovered, carrying a sense of exploration throughout the park.

Five Cats, Five Ways to Play

爬爬猫,负责入口昭示与亲子游乐;
安逸猫,执掌社交休憩;
撒野猫,掌管地形探索与自然科普;
功夫猫,集结运动活力;

No single cat takes centre stage at Hide-and-Seek Park. To welcome people of different ages and interests, we gave the park’s varied everyday settings to five cats, each with a distinct personality. Climbing Cat welcomes visitors and anchors family play; Easygoing Cat represents socialising and relaxation; Wild Cat leads the way through terrain exploration and nature discovery; Kung Fu Cat brings movement and energy; and Lucky Cat looks after the small pleasures of the journey home. Each cat looks after its own part of the park, while together they connect a range of everyday scenes—from family play and nature exploration to exercise, neighbourly conversations and chance encounters on the way home. Everyone can find their own kind of fun here, making the park a joyful meeting point between community and city.

Climbing Cat: The Thrill of the Climb

At the intersection on the site’s southwest corner, a small cat can be seen climbing determinedly up a tall pole. This is Climbing Cat. Reaching towards the sky, the little figure seems eager to welcome every visitor and call out to passers-by: “Hey, want to come and play at Hide-and-Seek Park?”

Existing ring-main units and electrical cabinets have also been carefully integrated into the play environment. Planting, cat motifs and playful paving soften the edges of these otherwise utilitarian structures, turning the surrounding space into part of the hide-and-seek game. Surprises can be found in every corner of the park.

Easygoing Cat: Take It Easy

Heading south around the park’s bend, visitors arrive at the Green Carpet Pavilion, the social heart of the park. A small bridge seems to float above the drainage channel. Beside the green carpet, a relaxed cat greets visitors with a playful look: Easygoing Cat, inviting everyone to sit, chat and enjoy an unhurried moment with their neighbours.

We wanted the building to feel less like an object placed in the park and more like an extension of the landscape. It rises gently from the ground and extends into the park as a rolling green carpet. Transparent glass façades soften the boundary between inside and outside, allowing the two landscapes to flow into one another.

Beneath the green carpet is a shared space for everyday life. Visitors can stop for coffee or a light meal, join a craft gathering or take part in a neighbourhood event. Part of the interior is set below ground level to provide the required headroom while keeping the building’s overall profile low. On the park-facing side, a generous overhang extends towards a sunken garden, allowing rest and conversation to flow naturally from indoors to outdoors.

Behind the building, the green carpet becomes a gently rising slope threaded with walking paths. Visitors can stroll along it, pause on a resting platform or climb to the top for a view across the park. The liveliest part of the park, however, belongs to Wild Cat.

Wild Cat: Come On, Let’s Run Wild

Beyond the park entrance lies its central play landscape: Wild Cat’s territory. This is where the site’s changes in level are most pronounced. Working with the existing terrain, we shaped a spiral Cat Mountain that rises from the ground and encloses a secret world for childhood adventures. Multiple routes lead inside, each offering a different possibility for exploration. Following the idea of hiding and discovery, moving through, climbing and exploring become the game itself, allowing children to play freely in a landscape that is not dictated by conventional play equipment.

Cat Mountain forms three ravine-like passages that lead into hidden spaces. As visitors move through them, the walls block and reveal views, creating the feeling of entering an unfamiliar natural world. Clues in the planting and flowing water encourage children to discover nature as they play.

Deep within the ravines, “Hide-and-Seek Folds” conceal an interactive surprise. When children venture into the folds, a curtain of water suddenly pours down, transforming the shadowy ravine into a cool, waterfall-like refuge. Cat Hill Island on the other side is more open, offering a view towards the central whirlpool. Hidden passages between the mountains lead towards the centre, waiting to be explored. Beyond the layers of Cat Mountain lies the most energetic destination in this area: the central whirlpool water-play zone.

The sunken terrain creates an intimate, embracing space for water play. Undulating exposed-aggregate paving traces the form of a whirlpool. Children can run and wade through the lower areas, while a range of interactive water effects are concealed in the higher ground. At the central water feature, children must work together to activate jets that gradually rise and cascade back down.

Nearby, Cat-Fur Hill extends play from water onto land. Moving between the splash zone and the hill, children trigger hidden surprises: a mischievous Spitting Cat blows bubbles from the top of Cat Mountain, while a cat-fur installation shoots up jets of water, bringing the whole summer to life. The landform theatre around the water-play area offers places to sit and watch, while inviting visitors to join the action at any moment. The inner theatre follows Cat Mountain in a series of rising grassy terraces, with a cantilevered green ravine canopy extending from the upper level. Parents can rest and watch their children play—or join in and rediscover their own childhood.

From Cat Mountain and the ravines to the central water feature and landform theatre, the site’s original level changes have become opportunities for exploration and play. The terrain creates varied spaces, while walls introduce moments of hiding and discovery. With every journey through the park, children can invent their own ways to play.

Kung Fu Cat: Moving Is the Best Kind of Fun

Further inside, behind the Easygoing Cat pavilion, is Kung Fu Cat’s territory. After playing, visitors can sit or lie down, or enjoy a relaxed workout with family and friends. Rather than intense competition, the space supports easy, enjoyable movement as part of everyday leisure.

As the park’s most tranquil area, Cat-Paw Lawn accommodates resting, outdoor yoga, neighbourhood picnics and other flexible community activities. Behind the lawn, jacaranda trees and outdoor furniture form a flower-lined path connecting a series of quiet pocket gardens.

Another activity space is the Cat-Ear Sports Court. A pale green ground colour and abstract cat motifs bring a lighthearted character to the surface. The court is not dedicated to a single sport; it can accommodate badminton, pickleball and other activities. Cat imagery and sporting activities overlap, turning every run, pause and conversation into another moment in the community’s game of hide-and-seek.

Lucky Cat: Had a Good Play? Time to Go Home

A planted green belt resembling cat scratches leads to the residential entrance. We hoped the park could be more than a route people take on their way home; it could also provide a gentle transition. Each walk through the greenery becomes a small ritual of returning home, offering a moment to set aside the day’s busyness and carry some of the park’s happiness back with you.

Soft and Fuzzy: The Planting Palette

Soft and Fuzzy: The Planting Palette The upper tree layer is intended to feel light and open. Jacarandas, well suited to Chengdu’s climate, form the main tree structure along paths and activity areas. Outside the flowering season, they provide a light canopy; from late spring into early summer, their pale purple flowers bring the landscape to life. Chinese sweetgum, a native tree that is rarely seen in Chengdu’s urban areas beyond places such as botanical gardens, was another deliberate choice. Around the central water feature, we planted groves that follow the whirlpool-shaped landform, cultivating a small woodland within the terrain. After one spring, new leaves had unfolded and the crowns had grown fuller, offering an early glimpse of the light, enveloping woodland we had imagined.

A light and open sweetgum grove

Seen through the glass from the planted roof building, the sweetgum grove undulates with the terrain. Beneath it, the lower planting layer adds a soft, fuzzy texture: rounded Casuarina-like shrubs hug the landform, while colourful-leaved willows, privet spheres, ornamental grasses and seasonal flowers add varied accents. Together, the layers create a planting character that is “light above, soft below”—already inviting anticipation of autumn.

The multi-purpose activity area maintains a clear structure within this soft texture. Japanese boxwood provides a stable green framework, while flowering plants—including blue eryngo and the plant referred to in the planting palette as “Willow-Leaf Galaxy”—add seasonal colour. After flowering, the space retains a lasting green foundation. Here, planting does more than provide greenery. Light, soft, layered and undulating, they carry the lively spirit of Hide-and-Seek into a soft, fuzzy landscape.

Cute and Full of Character: IP and Signage

We wanted the story of Hide-and-Seek to extend beyond the design concept into the park’s spaces, character installations and signage, turning the entire park into an immersive game of hide-and-seek. For the character design, we drew inspiration from the expressive eye motifs of Sanxingdui culture, combining them with abstract cat forms to create a visual identity rooted in Bashu culture and easy to recognise.

Each cat has its own personality: Climbing Cat is a little shy but curious, Easygoing Cat feels relaxed and laid-back, and Spitting Cat is a mischievous troublemaker. From two-dimensional illustrations to three-dimensional installations, small gestures and subtle expressions echo the mood of each space, allowing visitors to sense the cats’ personalities at a glance.

The signage system continues this lively character. We retained a slightly wobbly, hand-drawn line quality, making the cats feel alive—as if they might leap out of the grass at any moment. Directional signs, space descriptions and prompts are tucked behind low walls, beside benches and along grassy slopes. Rather than serving only as wayfinding, they become little surprises along the journey. Follow the paw prints and you may encounter Hide-and-Seek around the next corner. Whether running wild or strolling at leisure, visitors can discover a pleasure of their own.

The cats’ story does not end with the physical space. From the outset, we left room for the original IP to grow. As the park opens, the characters can extend into merchandise and interactive activities, such as photo spots and cat-finding quests, allowing the design’s planned surprises to become real stories that unfold on site. We hope Hide-and-Seek will be more than a collection of cute characters in a park. We hope it becomes a joyful memory that people want to remember, share and return to find again.

最后
In Closing

Let us return to the question posed at the beginning: can a green space built to serve a property display area move beyond its temporary purpose and truly become part of the daily lives of nearby residents? The answer at Hide-and-Seek Park lies in the small moments that happen here day after day. Children run and play, young people exercise, older residents sit beneath the trees, and neighbours chat on the lawn. Some pass through on their way home; others come specifically to visit. Some are simply passing by, then decide to stop for a moment. When people of different ages choose to linger and connect—and rediscover a little of the joy of childhood—the green space truly becomes part of community life.

These experiences also respond to questions about the relationship between design and operation that we explored at Atelier Scale’s Open House event a few months ago. From creating dedicated spaces and integrating local culture to reserving flexible activity areas and proactively addressing operational needs, we aim to use design to shape place memory and accommodate diverse activities, enabling the space to adapt to different future scenarios and needs.Atelier Scale believes landscape design does not need to manage a place directly. Instead, it can establish a framework and leave room for flexibility, creating possibilities for ways of living that have yet to emerge. Completion is not the end of design; it is the beginning of a place’s continuing growth.

We cannot predict everything that will happen in a park, nor do we need to plan every detail. Rather than defining the purpose of every space, we prefer to leave some room for life to grow on its own. The city will continue to grow, and daily life will become increasingly convenient. We hope the city will always have corners where people do not need to hurry.
