Appreciation towards EDGE DESIGN + CISDI for providing the following description:

对于传统工业遗产的保护与活化再利用，一直是当前中国许多城市在城市更新与产业升级过程中无法回避的课题，该设计通过对于原“上海第一钢铁厂”煅烧高炉的空间改造、设施更新及功能植入的设计与实践，试图探索一条工业遗产与时代背景相契合的一条再生之路。

The protection and adaptive reuse of the traditional industrial heritage, has always been the unavoidable problem during the process of developing and upgrading in lots of cities in China. The proposal of the design is to explore a revival way which is consist of industrial heritage and the new age by redesigning the architecture and infrastructure of “The 1^st Steel Factory of Shanghai”.

中国宝武钢铁会博中心位于上海市宝山区吴淞口区域。项目所在厂区最早为1938年11月兴建的日亚钢厂吴淞工场，后改名为“上海第一钢铁厂”，并于1988年调整为“上海宝钢不锈钢有限公司”。

The Baowu Steel conference center is located at Wusongkou Baoshan, Shanghai. The mill site where the project is located at was established as the name of Wusong work field of Riya Steel Factory at November, 1938, latter the name had been changed to be “The 1^st Steel Factory of Shanghai”. In 1988, the factory was renamed to be “Shanghai Baogang Stainless Steel Ltd”.

1999年10月2500立方米高炉点火投产，后随着国家与宝钢产业结构调整策略，于2016年6月关停。

The 2500 m³ blast furnace was first lighted at October, 1999, and it has been suspended from June, 2016 because of the strategy of industrial structure readjustment.

本项目早期定名“上海不锈高炉区域修缮改造工程”，初衷正是将2016年关停的2500立方米高炉区域改造成一个依托钢铁文化，面向社会开放，可承办大型国际会议类活动，又能容纳博物展览功能的综合性场馆。包括2021世界钢铁大会等大型活动都计划在本场馆举行。随着项目设计工作的推进，规划设计团队与业主一起为项目制定了更高的目标：希望通过这张“名片”，带动区域整体转型，提升区域活力和价值。

The project was named as “Renovation of Shanghai Stainless Blast Furnace” earlier, which intended to renovate the blast furnace field to be a multifunction destination that is able to open to the public, to be the conference hall of international activities and to be the gallery of steel, which include 2021 The World Steel Congress. Latter in the design process, the design team and the client decided to formulate a higher purpose which is to make the project to be the role model for completing the transition and upgrading of the nearby community by enhancing vitality and value of the nearby area.

远期规划是把高炉及周边区域打造成高炉遗址主题公园，以情景商业和文化展演为驱动，引入各类特色业态，包括科技、娱乐和设计等，促进文化消费和文化生产相关联，逐步培育产业生态圈，并最终打造成一个“具有网红属性”的“工业新天地，上海新地标”。

The further plan is to build a theme park of blast furnace, which can attract abundant commercial activities, including technology, entertainment and design etc. The final purpose is to build a new landmark of industry with the in Shanghai.

EDGE一界设计与中冶赛迪合作，在激烈的竞争中获胜，由EDGE一界设计一体化完成建筑、景观方案设计及室内概念方案设计，并由中冶赛迪团队完成施工图设计及EPC工程总包。项目从2019年12月底启动设计工作，到2020年4月动工，再到2020年12月底正式投入使用，在疫情等不利因素影响下，全程依然仅用了一年左右时间。

The corporation of EDEG Studio and CISDI won the first place from the intensive competition, EDGE Studio is responsible for the architectural design, landscape architectural design and interior design, CISDI responsible for the construction design and the EPC project. The design project started from December, 2019, constructing from April, 2020, finishing and working from December, 2020, which only cost 1 year to complete everything from nothing, even it was under the negative influence of the Covid-19.

本项目占地约6万平米，主体会博中心建筑面积约4.47万平米，由原1.7万平米的高炉厂房改造而来。本项目的一大设计挑战在于一方面需要尽可能保留场内原有工业遗存，又要为未来功能使用创造足够多空间，并保留一定弹性。

The site area of the project is about 60000㎡, the floor area of the main building is about 44700㎡, which was 17000㎡ before. The design team needs to keep heritage from the old factory as much as possible, at the same time, they need to create more space for the future, which is the biggest challenge in this project.

团队首先对高炉厂房本身及周边原工业设施进行了梳理，确定了保证与拆除部分。为保证高炉东立面作为其主立面的昭示性效果，团队优化了高炉东侧的附属建筑及设施，打造出及集散、景观、文化呈现功能于一体的“荣耀广场”，并在其中点缀多个钢铁主题的艺术雕塑和小品。而对于场地西侧的热风炉、重力除尘等设施，设计团队选择以保留修缮为主，辅以立体绿化及灯光效果等，最大限度留存其“工业味道”。

The first part of work for the design team is to tidy the data of nearby existing infrastructures and components, which helped the team to decide that things needs to be tear down. For ensuring west side of the blast furnace to be the highlighted part of the project, the design team rearranged buildings and infrastructures at the East side, designed the “Honor square” which is consist of multifunction, including gathering, landscaping, and culture expressing. At west side of the site, stoves and the gravity dusters are planed to be repaired for remaining the sense of industry as much as possible.

高炉厂房部分则是本次改造的重点和难点。方案最大程度保留了高炉主体及平台，并对已老旧不堪的原维护结构进行了重塑。同时，我们通过在原厂房东侧延伸一个大跨度空间的方式，解决了入口集散空间和竖向交通空间的问题。入口大厅与高炉之间通过一个“时光隧道”联系，而隧道的尽头便是以高炉为中心的核心展示空间。方案将高炉周边的屋顶都做成通透效果，以便在炉底抬头便能看见整个百米高的高炉体系。

The blast furnace workshop is the most important part of this project. The proposal remained core of the blast furnace, meanwhile, the team redesigned structure system, due to the existing structures are too old to adapt new functions. The new extended wide span space is for population gathering and separating, which is the vertical circulation core as well. The entrance lobby is connected with a time tunnel which leads people to core part of the architecture, the blast furnace hall. The design team removed the existing cover for people are able to see the whole furnace system when they look up.

高炉南侧是多层展览及商业空间，高炉北侧则是可容纳近千人的主会议大厅及多个会议厅、接见厅及办公空间。高炉平台下方的架空层被保留下来作为未来的商业空间。

The South side of the proposal is multilevel exhibition and commercial area, the North side is the main conference hall, several smaller hall and offices. The lifted level under the furnace is remained for the future commercial area.

建筑、室内、景观的一体化设计是本项目的一大亮点，同一个团队来一体化完成各专业方案设计打破了专业壁垒的空间边界，使得设计理念得以贯穿全局。比如设计团队针对钢铁工业主题提出的“高炉记忆”概念，通过线条、灯光等手法复原“高炉铁水铸造”的意向，由建筑、室内、景观三个专业协同，将高炉室外塔台、高炉室内炉体、大厅空间、室外广场及镜面水池等串联连为一，夜间辅以律动的橙色灯光，生动的向市民游客述说“钢铁是怎样炼成的”故事。

The integrated design of architecture, interior and landscape architecture makes another highlight spot for this proposal, all members are come from the same team, which breaks the edge of the space, the design philosophy goes all the way from the start to the end. For example, the team decided to express the idea of “the memory of furnace”, which is for recreating the image of floating steel in the furnace, three majors worked as one to linked the furnace tower, the furnace, the lobby, the square and the water to be at the same line, plus the vivid orange lights, which presents to visitors “How The Steel Was Tempered”.
