The BAITASI REMADE Project launches long-term operations

白塔寺再生计划是一个长期的计划,首次亮相于2015年北京国际设计周期间。该项目以白塔寺历史胡同街区为背景，结合公众参与、建筑及基础设施升级改造等形式，用一种温和的发展方式将设计思维和文创理念融入城市更新计划之中。今年的白塔寺再生计划也将以设计周为开端，进一步促进现有社区与未来的对话以及专业人士之间的互动，涉及人群将涵盖来自经济和学术领域的专家、设计领域的创意先锋以及当地居民。此项计划将由团队创意总监兼策展人毕月/Beatrice Leanza 主导创意策划工作.

本次白塔寺再生计划将会以“城市研习与共享未来”为主题，深入开展一系列为白塔寺区域特别制定的举措，并侧重“设计教育的未来和文化共享”，针对白塔寺区域的复兴方法进行务实的探索。相应的研究成果也可以为在社会及环境建设方面面临相似挑战的国内外城市提供借鉴。

白塔寺再生计划旨在以一种前所未有的方式重新思考城市生活的可持续性，并从北京胡同区域传统的人居方式获得启发，结合知识创造与共享的网络系统，打造新的城市社区。

First launched with the 2015 edition of Beijing Design Week in the context of Baitasi historic hutong district, Baitasi Remade is a program of urban renewal tasked to integrate communal engagement, architectural and infrastructural upgrading by way of soft-strategies of development taking design thinking and cultural making at their heart.

Once again a partner program of BJDW, the 2016 BTS Remade project unveils long-term operations under the creative direction of Beatrice Leanza, positioning itself as a living incubator for a networked community of design professionals and entrepreneurs to take home in the area and partake to the rejuvenation of its cultural and social ecosystem. The program presented at BJDW therefore offers insight into post-event activities fostering dialogue between perspective and existing communities, as a prelude to a generative process of interactions among various professional stakeholders – from economic and institutional actors to creative players in the fields of design at large – and local residents.

Under the thematic agenda of Urban Learning & The Future of Sharing, the program dives into an articulated strand of site-oriented initiatives that labour around ‘the future of design education and sharing culture’ intended as key fora for the discursive and pragmatic exploration of methodologies of redevelopment specific to the Baitasi area that could be further employed as blueprints for similarly challenged social and built environments in and out of China.

The Baitasi Remade project aims at emplacing unprecedented modes of collectively rethinking the sustainability of life in the city as products of networked systems for knowledge making-and-sharing inspired by the human-scaled dimension of traditional settlements like Beijing’s hutong areas, to eventually shape new urban communities.

白塔寺再生计划将对该区域内独特的城市和社会形态进行重点研究，与此同时，也将着眼于为更大范围内有着类似人居环境的区域提出有创造性的策略，并对区域的发展进行重新定位。对于像北京这样的大都市来说，社会结构和人口发展的变化在带来挑战的同时也带来了机遇。在这种有历史层次的街区中往往存在着共同互惠、相互依存的价值观，而这种价值观中也透露出一种地方归属感。这份归属感将永远存在于一个无形的空间中，同时也贯穿在我们的日常生活里。

从过去到现在，不同形式的空间思维与社会决策如何产生协同作用，为现代城市居民提升生活水平并引入新的知识体系？居民的生活方式能否在随后的发展中顺应全球扩张的城市经济？我们如何能够将分散的社会群体及利益相关者的需求和愿景重新关联起来，以修补城市集群间所产生的分化？

By taking Baitasi’ unique urban and social formation as its prime area of investigation, BTS Remade looks at creating strategies of productive re-positioning for similarly shaped living environs within the larger ecosystem of the city and its global expanse. Transformations in the structural and demographic outlook of large metropolises like Beijing, present challenges as much as opportunities for such historically stratified neighbourhoods and their constitutive values of communal reciprocity and social co-dependency to accommodate a distributed sense of place and belonging as fostered across the evermore dematerializing spatial confines we inhabit and traverse in our daily endeavours.

How can past and present forms of spatial thinking and social making together inform novel living standards and knowledge systems for contemporary urban residents? Is there a place for thereof ensuing modalities of life to partake in the larger urban economy of global expanse? How can we mend the disruptions of urban conglomerations by way of rewiring connections among the desires, needs and expectations of fragmented social groups and interests?

白塔寺再生计划采用参与式观察法来探究在城市营造的大环境下，如何促使个体、组织机构、企业和政府共同协作，参与到城市的转型过程当中去。项目将在研究过程中深入探讨在当今网络化的数字型共享经济背景下，怎样逐渐扩大合作与参与度，来解决城市现存问题以及由这些问题引发的雾化性社会效应。白塔寺再生计划致力于促成专业知识集群之间新的对话进程，集群领域涵盖城市、社会、人类学、科学、经济等等，为新公司、创业者以及创意活动如何融入该区域的发展提出新的思路。

The Baitasi Remade project takes an investigative approach of participatory observation into the constitutive nature of today’s processes of transformation that motivate individuals’, institutions’, corporate and governmental co-participation in the grand narrative of urban-making.

It does so by addressing potential outcomes for today’s network-based, digitally-shaped economies of sharing to escalate collaboration and engagement to extant urban problems and their otherwise atomizing social effects. The project strives to configure new process of dialogue among clusters of knowledge and expertise – urban, social, anthropological, scientific, economic, etc. – to generate new ideas for start-ups, social entrepreneurship and creative initiatives to be integrated in the area.

城市研习·共享未来 Urban Learning & The Future of Sharing

2016白塔寺再生计划的整体项目将会围绕“城市研习·共享未来” 呈现两个核心知识创造中心，结合白塔寺区域及当地居民，开展一系列相关举措，同时也为设计周结束之后的活动打响前奏。相关活动将呈现在选定的区域空间内，由白塔寺再生计划团队与一批长期合作伙伴一起进行活动策划，为该区域带来特定的公共计划和全新创建的项目。与此同时，白塔寺再生计划也将让人们重新思考如何借助设计针对该历史风貌区的社会和基础设施状况开展富有成效的对话。

整体项目将分为三个部分，包括The Global School (TGS)/世界学院和Baitasi Print Club/白塔寺印刷俱乐部两个知识创造中心，以及一系列Baitasi Projects/白塔寺项目。

The 2016 BTS Remade curatorial framework encapsulated under the agenda of ‘Urban Learning & The Future of Sharing’ is articulated around two core knowledge-making hubs connected to a set of initiatives and participatory projects involving the local context&residents as a prelude to post-BJDW activities. These are to be found around selected spaces in the area and are organized with long-term partners and collaborators involved in post-event planning as ad hoc public programs and newly created projects rethinking how design can enter productive dialogue with the social and infrastructural givens of this historical urban enclave.

The program is thus divided in three core sections including: two knowledge-making hubs which are The Global School and the Baitasi Print Club, and a number of initiatives scattered around the area under the umbrella of Baitasi Projects.

TGS/世界学院将被打造成为一个前所未有的国际研究与教育机构，以设计和城市为中心，致力于将不同设计领域中的本地和国际组织、学院、企业、专业人士及前瞻者联合在一起，在白塔寺区域建设一个新的设计社区，并以此为契机，结合当地的社会和环境建设，开发出一系列研究工具和研究方法。

根据白塔寺再生计划接下来的三年发展规划，世界学院项目将于2017年起，作为研究和规划白塔寺地区未来可持续发展的引擎，推进以“共享”为原驱动力的社区营造过程。与此同时，世界学院也将致力于成为中国首家独创机构，结合多种不同的思维和营造方式，与城市一起，去为城市做设计。2016北京国际设计周期间，世界学院将由白塔寺再生计划团队、SANS practice及LCD(Laboratory for Creative Design)联合策划。

今年设计周期间，世界学院将在宫门口菜市场1500平米的空间中得以呈现。北京临界工作室/ reMIX Studio将负责菜市场的空间设计，把菜市场空间改造成为一个 “精彩纷呈的多功能剧场”。世界学院也将在设计周期间与国内外设计界同行合作，举办一系列展览、相关活动及工作坊。

The Global School (TGS) is an unprecedented international research & educational institute dedicated to design and the city tasked to network local and international organizations, institutions, companies, professionals and visionaries in various design fields to become part of a new design community taking ‘home’ in this unique neighbourhood and thereof partake in the development of tools and methodologies for engagement with the local social and built environment.

TGS will launch operations later in 2017 as central to the next 3-year plan of Baitasi Remade, as an engine for studying and planning the sustainability of Baitasi’s future as a beacon of sharing-driven processes of community making, while positioning itself as the first independent institute in China specifically dedicated to disciplinary interactions among diverse modes of thinking and making in design for and with the city. Part of TGS program for BJDW 2016 is developed in collaboration with SANS practice and LCD (Laboratory for Creative Design).

TGS temporary venue at the time of BJDW is located in Baitasi’s old market, 1,500 sqm that will be repurposed into a polifunctional ‘theatre of happenings’ designed by Beijing-based reMIX Studio where exhibitions, discursive events and workshops will be hosted in partnership with local and international counterparts.

TGS Lab/世界学院实验室将由LCD（Laboratory for Creative Design）负责活动主导，重点着眼于设计方法的拓展、快速制造技术及开源性系统的探讨。作为白塔寺胡同区域的核心服务平台，世界学院实验室将围绕胡同再生，进一步吸引专业人士和本地居民的参与。

与此同时，世界学院还将为参观者特别推出世界学院 快闪食堂/TGS POP-UP Canteen服务。届时，’快闪食堂’由北京大田作物设计事务所主D-T-Z-W Design Studio 设计将会使用取自当地的食材，并与区域内现有的商业业态开展合作。

BTS Print Club/白塔寺印刷俱乐部项目将围绕现代传播文化及其相关拓展领域，以印刷品、电子文档等形式集中展现多元化的创意成果和实验性研究。项目将侧重当代都市人群与未来知识共享，举办为期一周的成果汇报、创客研讨和学术辩论，吸引专家学者、相关企业、国内外工作室的设计师的参与。其中，与出版及平面设计相关的展览将在印刷俱乐部及临近空间举办，探讨如何平面设计和它的转换空间能够生成有叙事和档案释实用性的工具，将进一步和TGS/世界学院未来项目一起发展。

作为2016白塔寺再生计划的一部分，由知名建筑师董功（直向建筑 Vector Architects）、徐甜甜（DnA建筑事务所）和张轲（标准营造ZAO/standardarchitecture）参与的院落改造项目将陆续完工，并与2015年已完成改造的华黎（TAO迹建筑）的四分院一同在设计周期间亮相。从2017年起，这些院落也将作为下一阶段白塔寺再生计划的核心场地投入使用。设计周期间，相关展览及成果汇报将在院落现场呈现。

设计周期间还将呈现一系列相关的Baitasi Projects白塔寺项目，这些项目将与白塔寺区域的活动主体密切联系，并结合世界学院的日程，在选定的地点开展相关活动。

此外，由《世界建筑》杂志承办的2016白塔寺院落更新国际方案征集“北京小院儿的重生”的入围作品展览、评审环节暨论坛活动将于宫门口菜市场内举办，最终获奖者将在北京国际设计周活动结束后宣布。

所有白塔寺再生计划品牌相关的设计都出自熔岩观（北京）平面设计有限公/LAVA北京。从导视和标牌系统到印刷品，这些设计的灵感取自于节庆期间挂在街区中的小彩旗和横幅。设计周期间，这些用于活动参观导视的物品也会提供给当地商户自用。同时，周边小商户也会得到白塔寺指定商户套装，内含一系列特别定制的物品，包括：购物袋、纸巾、围裙和道旗。

The TGS LAB run by LCD (Laboratory for Creative Design) focuses on augmented design methodologies, rapid manufacturing and open-source systems for hutong regeneration, as a core service platform to be further developed in the area as a participatory project engaging professionals and local residents.

The School also features a special TGS Pop-Up Canteen designed and operated by D-T-Z-W Design Studio offering temporary services to visitors by way of employing local resources and hacking into the existing commercial ecosystem of the area.

The BTS Print Club is a multifaceted unit for creative production and experimental investigations around the culture of contemporary communication and its expanding fields, from print and digital to augmented. Here experts and companies in relevant industries, local and international studios and designers will take part in a one-week series of presentations, making sessions and intellectual debates around the future of knowledge-sharing with ever more segmented groups of contemporary urbanites. Relevant exhibitions, events and workshops about publishing and graphic design will also be hosted in the Print Club and adjacent locations to explore how the graphic medium and its transforming spaces can generate tools for both narrative and archival purposes that will be further developed in concert with The Global School future programs.

Part of the BTS 2016 program is also the unveiling of completed courtyard-renovation projects by renown architects Dong Gong (Vector Architects), Xu Tiantian (DnA) and Zhang Ke (ZAO/standardarchitecture), that join Hua Li (TAO Office)’s Split House presented already in 2015.

These will be activated as core venues for the next phases of the Baitasi Remade project from 2017. Relevant shows and presentations will be held on site during the week.

Under the section Baitasi Projects a variety of initiatives strongly connected to the area and the above investigated subject matters will be featured in selected locations and/or as discursive programs presented in collaboration with The Global School agenda.

Furthermore the finalists’ exhibition, jury meeting cum forum for the Baitasi International Design Competition – Rethinking Beijing Courtyards launched earlier this year in collaboration with World Architecture magazine will be presented in the market and the winners announced by the end of Beijing Design Week.

Designed and developed by LAVA Beijing the Baitasi Remade project’s brand new Visual Identity, Signage and Wayfinding systems are to be implemented as a special community-outreach project in the area. They are devised to be integrated with the visual language of vernacular festive signing (multicolour flags and banners often lining the streetscape of small scale neighbourhoods) as well as that of its local residents and business owners, whose shopfronts are mostly clustered around the petit yet buzzing commercial street in the proximity of the old market.

Items designed to provide guidance for visitors of BJDW are also offered to local residents to be used and/or appropriated for their own ‘business operation’.

These are part of a BTS Official Vendor’s Kit that each shop owner is given for use during BJDW’s two weeks. These include grocery’s shopping bags, napkins, aprons, tapes and banners.

关于白塔寺历史风貌保护区 ABOUT Baitasi Historic District

阜内白塔寺历史文化保护区位于北京市西城区，总占地面积约为37公顷，与国家金融中心——“北京金融街”仅一街之隔，北面西直门商务区，西望阜成门商圈、三里河政务区，东临西单、西四商圈，白塔寺区域是一个由众商圈包围的一个充满丰富文化遗产的文化绿洲，社区生活恬静安逸。

“阜内白塔寺历史文化保护区”形成于元代，历经明清延续至今，是横贯首都朝阜干线的西起点，具有深厚的历史底蕴和丰富的文化内涵。区内拥有元朝修建的北京最古老的城市景点——妙应寺白塔，和罕见的藏经阁，还有以中国文学巨匠鲁迅故居为基础修建的北京鲁迅博物馆和鲁迅故居，有至今每逢初一十五香火很旺的慈因寺+ ，还有体现中西合璧建筑艺术的民国四合院……汇集了古都文化、市井风情文化和名人故居文化，堪称西城区的“文脉”。

Baitasi (The White Pagoda Temple) is a cultural and historical preservation zone located just across Beijing’s Financial Street District on the west second ring. A traditional hutong area covering 37 hectares, with Xizhimen business district on the north, looking upon Fuchengmen commercial area and adjacent to Xidan and Xisi shopping districts on the east side, Baitasi presents itself as a cultural oasis, a peaceful enclave among newly developed business areas.

A settlement founded during the Yuan Dynasty, it has preserved itself through the Ming and Qing periods to this day. With its profound historical heritage and rich cultural connotations, the area is home to some of the city’s most ancient attractions: the Miaoying Temple (or White Pagoda Temple) built during the Yuan Dynasty, the Archive of Buddhist Texts, the Beijing Lu Xun Museum (built around the philosopher’s former residence), the Ci Yin Temple, which attracts crowds of worshippers on the 1st and 15th day of every lunar month, all cast among the traditional MinGuo courtyard houses in an architectural style that integrates eastern and western traits. Having lived through historical periods rooted in the establishment of the ancient capital, Baitasi is considered one of Xicheng district’s cultural hearts.
