The Ad Astra House is a 2,300 SF 3-bedroom residential renovation project completed by Studio Roslyn in 2018 that aims to redefine how we consider hospitality in the home. Designed to facilitate the unique needs of two established Vancouver restauranteurs, Ad Astra is an artful approach to materiality and multi-use programming.
Through a collaborative design process Roslyn found ways to incorporate the client’s deep love of cooking, hosting and hospitality into a residential space that would serve not only their growing family but also serve as their expandable office. Ad Astra is designed around a material palate directly inspired by the personalities of the two clients. Our client’s punk rawk aesthetic and rock n’ roll attitude towards life mixed with their contemporary artwork was the perfect starting point.

With a nod to the 100 year-old historic building that houses not only their home, but one of their most successful restaurants on the ground floor, the Ad Astra House incorporates intentional wood detailing and bleached white oak flooring throughout and grounds it with deep-black figural elements.

Bold graphic black and white tile define “high traffic” areas such as the bathrooms and kitchen, while soft grey and blue hues calm the home office and child’s bedroom. Gold and black fixtures and nero marquina marble give the apartment a sense of functional luxury and highlight the most important elements of the dynamic space.
