Bangkok is a city filled with dispersed, neglected, abandoned spaces. Rather than to see them as impractical left-overs, we chose to envision them as spaces with potential to be repurposed as meaningful venues for communities. Playgrounds are well positioned to bring a diverse demographic to an area and by so doing activate its surroundings. At Bangkok Design Week (Feb.) 2020, with the sponsorship by Vespa Thailand, Imaginary Objects launched a city-wide Play Object initiative with three playgrounds situated in different locations throughout Bangkok.

In pursuit of revitalizing left-over spaces in Bangkok, Imaginary Objects secured three playground locations prime for intervention: the Grand Postal Building in Charoenkrung, the Old Siam Plaza in Sam Yot, and Acmen Ekamai. We hoped to revitalize these locations by allowing the playgrounds to temporarily transform them into destinations for play. The designs of the playgrounds were envisioned as volumetric objects with a strong formal presence in order to contrast with their surroundings.

Although most playgrounds are composed of a series of stations distributed on the ground, we wanted to question the notion of the ground and simultaneously focus on a single element of play, in this case netted surfaces. We manipulated the net to create a range of different spaces and surfaces conducive to play. Its malleability allowed for both formal expression and interactive play. The objects were essentially defined and supported by a steel pipe space frame, braced and trussed as needed to support the sometimes precarious postures of the designs. These postures challenged the notion of the ground, created compelling spaces and routes within the objects and ultimately enhanced the effectiveness of the objects as destinations.
