Who is your favourite architect? Why?
I like Snøhetta, Weiss Manfredi, and IwamotoScott.  I’m intrigued by the way these firms are driven by context in a way that makes their architecture more dynamic.

What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education? There are a lot of different ideas being developed at Penn.  A systematic approach to design is what really pulls them all together.

What have you gained during the MAD internship?
My internship at MAD has given me the opportunity to work on a very complex project that will soon be built at the lightning speed of the Chinese construction industry.  It has been a very valuable experience.

What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Any suggestion?
Before I came to Beijing for my internship I had never been to Asia. Upon first impression I was surprised, and honestly a bit disappointed at at how familiarly stale a lot of the newer developments felt.  Now that I’ve spent some time getting to know Beijing a little better, I love the hutongs.  Is it possible to be nostalgically progressive?

What is your dream?
I dream about flying a lot.  It’s fun!

What would you do if you were not an architect?
Go back to school.  Again and again.

What is your dream project?
A book filled with both fantastical and practical ideas, most of which I haven’t thought of yet.

What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?
Walks of Life is by far the earliest of the projects.  It needs a better title.  It needs lots of things, actually, but I like it because I really fell in love with cities and with architecture while I was working on it.

Walks of life: Denver Transportation Museum

Reality is different from our common perceptions. Stereotypes of transportation will be realized and overcome.

Although Lower Downtown Denver is home to Union Station and the Market Street Bus Terminal, the streets are not overwhelmed by trains and busses, but by pedestrians. On a typical
weekday, most of the pedestrians fit into two categories: the bum or the businessman.

The paths of these two types of pedestrians are very different. The businessman tends to travel directly from one destination to the next, rarely stopping. The bum, on the other hand, tends to wander at a leisurely pace, having no specific destination.

Agrarian Sprawl

The ambition of this project is to radically change the urban landscape by turning the landscape of Philadelphia into productive agrarian sprawl. This method of greening the city will reach far and wide as it addresses issues ranging from vacant land in de-industrializedcities, poor access to fresh food in under-served neighborhoods, and overabundance of processed foods in our diets, to the current state of the stressed global food network. With an education center, a market, and a storm-water-filtering wetland, the new housing complex will become a hub for the exchange of information and food. The education center will provide urban agricultural training. Water filtered on site can be used to grow food across the city. Surplus crops can then be brought to the market, providing fresh food for the neighborhoods of Philadelphia.
