Meinhard von Gerkan will be honored in Beijing on September 24, 2019, with the Liang Sicheng Prize – the highest distinction for architects in China. The news of the award coincides with the 20th anniversary of gmp’s building activity in China.

曼哈德·冯·格康所获得的梁思成建筑奖是中国授予建筑师和建筑学者的最高荣誉。梁思成建筑奖每两年评选一次，由中国建筑学会主办，国际建筑师协会给予了大力支持。梁思成建筑奖以激励建筑师和建筑学者的创新精神，繁荣建筑创作，提高建筑设计、理论研究和建筑教育水平为宗旨。该奖项以梁思成先生的名字命名，他是中国著名的建筑师、建筑历史学家、建筑教育家，在20世纪初凭借对中国历史建筑的保护修复而闻名。梁思成于1947年凭借其贡献获得了普林斯顿大学荣誉博士，也曾在哈佛与宾夕法尼亚大学学习，毕生致力于推动中国与国际建筑界的文化交流。

Meinhard von Gerkan will be honored with the Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize – the highest distinction for architects in China. The prize is awarded every two years by the Architectural Society of China (ASC) and supported by the International Union of Architects (UIA). It aims to stimulate the creativity of architects and architectural scholars and to promote architectural production as well as teaching and research in the field. The award is named after Liang Sicheng, one of China’s most prominent architects, architectural historians, and educators. In the first half of the 20th century he dedicated himself to, among other things, the preservation of historical Chinese architecture. In 1947, Princeton University awarded him an honorary doctorate for his contributions. Liang, who had studied at Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania, had always championed cultural exchange between Chinese and international architects.

自从曼哈德·冯·格康在20年前赢得北京德国使馆学校的设计竞赛并开始在中国进行建筑实践，他也一直在推动着中德两国间的建筑文化交流。在他的带领下，目前在中国已建成一百多个项目，在过去的二十年间不断影响着中国的城市建筑。如果没有冯·格康与中国之间的紧密联系，这一切将无从谈起——他在二十年间往返中国八十余次便是最好的证明。对他来讲，与当地文化的对话过程以及用当代的建筑手段转译当地文化已经成为了一个愈加鲜明的主题，这点不论是在临港新城的规划、中国国家博物馆或北京海淀基督堂的设计中，都有着清晰的表达。

Ever since winning the competition for the German School in Beijing and beginning his building activity in the country, twenty years ago, Meinhard von Gerkan has also promoted this cultural exchange. Under his leadership, more than one hundred projects have been realized in China that have had a strong influence on the country’s architecture over the past two decades. Without von Gerkan’s deep attachment to China, manifested in more than eighty visits, this would not have been possible. For him, the focus has always been on conducting a dialogue that explores the local culture and its translation in contemporary architecture – whether for the construction of Nanhui (originally Lingang) New City, the National Museum of China, or the Haidian Christian Church in Beijing.

Vita of Meinhard von Gerkan

教授，荣誉博士，建筑师，工程硕士，德国建筑师协会BDA资深会员。

1935 年出生于里加拉脱维亚。1965 年与福尔克温•玛格共同创立 gmp 建筑师事务所。曾任德国布伦瑞克工业大学建筑设计研究所所长、教授（1974-2002年）；2007年创立建筑文化学院（aac）并任院长；受聘于汉堡高等自由艺术学院，并获任华东师范大学荣誉教授、同济大学建筑城规学院顾问教授、东南大学访问教授、美国建筑师协会荣誉会员等。他获奖众多，其中包括德国弗里茨－舒马赫建筑奖、罗马尼亚国家奖、德国建筑师协会（BDA）大奖，德国建筑师协会建筑文化奖，并被授予德意志联邦共和国一等十字勋章。冯•格康在德国和中国设计了大量的公共建筑，包括柏林泰戈尔机场、柏林中央火车站、中国国家博物馆改扩建、天津西站、青岛大剧院、汉诺威世博会基督馆等。

Born in 1935 in Riga, Latvia. Together with Volkwin Marg, von Gerkan founded gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects in 1965. The beginning of his career was marked by an important project—Berlin Tegel Airport—which has been followed by many others to this day, including Berlin’s central train station, the Hanoi Museum,and most recently the Kulturpalast Dresden. In 1974 von Gerkan was appointed to the Chair for Design by Technical University (TU) Braunschweig and in 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Chung Yuan Christian University in Chung Li, Taiwan. The East China Normal University College of Design in Shanghai awarded von Gerkan an honorary professorship in 2007, and Tongji University in Shanghai appointed him Advising Professor in 2014. He is one of the co-founders of the gmp Foundation and the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) for the advancement of gifted young architects, which works to promote young architects. Von Gerkan is a member of the Freie Akademie der Künste in Hamburg and has received numerous awards, such as the Fritz Schumacher Prize, the Romanian State Prize, the Association of German Architects Grand Award, and Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit. His two-volume biography was published by Jovis in 2015.
