Where can architecture take you? We believe that an inert structure can be transporting: architecture can feed the desire to discover, it can alter your perception, upend your expectations, and open you to the existence of other realities. The desire to discover is equally the desire for progress: not just another place, but new possibilities.

A journey begins at this point of recognition: that there is an elsewhere, some incredible place to explore, even in your own backyard. Like seeing the moon on a clear night, you can start to identify its surface, craters, or possible depths. Is there life up there?Like the 19th century romance with celestial bodies at the precipice of modern technology, we echo Jules Verne’s enchantment with the natural world and its furthest reaches. Across his bibliography, he describes the routes to the center of the earth, the depths of the sea, and the surface of the moon in a way that is only possible through the efforts of discovery. Across the books that comprise his Voyages Extraordinaires, Verne opens portals to other universes, but he also delights in the means of travelingthere. The ship that takes Captain Nemo to the bottom of the sea is described as both a tactical vehicle and a lush interior, outfitted with an organ, salon, and a formal dining room. The proto-science-fiction that Jules Verne wrote into the fantasies of children and adults shapes our practice today.“We are all, in one way or another, the children of Jules Verne,” writes the author Ray Bradbury. A first edition of Vingt mille lieues sous les mers on the shelf of Marc’s family home in Strasbourg certainly attests to that.

设计师在苏州构建起了Boolean Operator，他们精心设计出了这一“移动”结构。Boolean Operator装置实际是一个大型展厅，也是为中国苏州金鸡湖双年展活动所安设的。整个设计超越了周围的环境，同时又嵌入其中。通常，人们会感兴趣这个空间，从而开始令人惊喜的探险。

That’s how we found ourselves in Suzhou, delivering a structure that’s carefully engineered to “move” you. Boolean Operator is a large scale pavilion installed for the event of the Jinji Lake Biennial in Suzhou, China, where it transcends the surrounding environment, even as it remains embedded in it. Typically, we argue for the contextual; here were interested in a surprising point of departure.

运输体验|A transporting experience

就像凡尔纳书中的Nautilus是以早期法国潜艇为模型，设计师也运用超薄的壳结构打造了一艘运输船，利用工程将一个世界到另一个世界量化开来，对于凡尔纳而言，它心中的时间超前。Nautilus被伪装成一种海洋生物，同时成为一个引人注目的栖息地。Nautilus由尼莫船长驾驶巡航在神秘岛和海底中，文中它被描述为“巨大的铁板圆筒”（l’énormecyclindredetôle），将探险者带入未知的领域，尼莫船长曾详细的阐述了它的形状：“整个潜艇足够的长，向尾部逐渐变细，这样的造型很方便水流过，同时对船舶的运动没有任何障碍。”

Like Verne’s Nautilus, a ship modeled on an early French submarine, our ultra-thin shell structure is a transporting vessel. The vector of translation from one world to another is highly engineered, and for Verne, ahead of its time. Disguised as a kind of sea creature in steel sheet metal, the Nautilus becomes a conspicuous part of the habitat it navigates.The Nautilus, piloted by Captain Nemo in The Mysterious Island and on his journey to the bottom of the sea, is described in the text as an “enormous cylinder of sheet iron,” (l’énorme cylindre de tôle) that carries its explorers into unknown territories. Captain Nemo elaborates on its form: “its lines are sufficiently long and their tapering gradual enough, so that the displaced water easily slips past and poses no obstacle to the ship’s movements.”

探索装置|A device for discovery

A porthole becomes an aquarium at the threshold between two ecosystems. Beached on the urban shore of Suzhou, our Nautilus frames views onto a strange interior, teeming with activity. From inside an alien form, a craft in impossibly thin aluminum, voyagers see out onto a plaza that seems far away all of a sudden—in another dimension, perhaps.At this opening between two universes, the thinness of the enclosure becomes apparent.

内部的新世界|Inside a new world

The interior of the pavilion reveals an unreal space only separated from the city by a porous 2mm shell. It stretches impossibly into great depth, and the fine resolution of its curving surface render its extents indeterminate. You have to wander through to feel out all that the space contains.Suffuse in light, the details come into and out of focus. A continuous surface grows from a network of columns that peel open into the enclosing shell. The intricacy of the skin asserts a density: of limbs, of openings, of parts and their connections. You have to let your eyes adjust to the resolution of the experience. Unfocusing your gaze again, the whole scene overwhelms, strikes awe, compels you to move closer, deeper, and through an edgeless space. The doubly-curved surfaces cast no regular shadows, giving little information to the eye to perceive its scale or depth. The only way to understand the space is to move through it. Your winding path isn’t designed, but implied by a swirl of light, plotted on a map of your own desires.

Openings in the bulbous envelope also have a gravitational quality, they pull you into unknown depths. Maybe it’s a vortex, a moon door, a rabbit hole to some unwritten wonderland; you approach the void cautiously, or perhaps with the confidence of some modern-day explorer.

神秘岛|On a mysterious island

Not far from the contemporary glimmer of the Suzhou Center is another mysterious site that warrants a voyage west across Jinji Lake. The lingering gardens can be found on an island of greenery in the middle of the city. There, a poetry between architecture and landscape design, dynastic artistry and natural rock formations, stands protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Constructed over a century of dynastic rule, as if a scene in a traditional Chinese landscape painting, the gardens merge histories of art, craftsmanship, and culture into a serene outdoor environment.

THEVERYMANY emerges on a hazy plaza in Suzhou with an art experience so unlike the city surrounds. A surprising interior to be found among the usual business of the Suzhou Center, it must be entered to be discovered. But as it becomes known and mapped by explorers—local and visiting—it becomes a site to pursue, to seek out, and to transport you over and over again.
