The city of Almere presents today its plans for the Floriade 2022 candidature.Almere is one of the four Dutch cities left in the race for the prestigious gardenExpo which takes place once every ten years in the Netherlands and it currentlyopen in Venlo. The MVRDV plan for Almere is not a temporary expo site but alasting green Cité Idéale as an extension to the existing city centre. Thewaterfront site opposite the city centre will be developed as a vibrant new urbanneighbourhood and also a giant plant library which will stay beyond the expo. Theambition is to create a 300% greener exhibition than currently standard, bothliterally green and sustainable: each program on the site will be combined withplants which will create programmatic surprises, innovation and ecology. At thesame time the site will be with a vast program such as a university, hotel,marina, offices and homes more urban than any other Floriade has been before, itis an exemplary green city. The Nederlandse Tuinbouwraad (NTR) will decide inAugust which city will be organising the next Floriade in 2022.
