Whistling Sea
2009
LED, Korean paper, mirror, melodic sound made by whistle
Dimensions variable

I produced this work, by imagining a scene spreading before my eyes, as I rise up from a deep sea. Unlike a dark, tranquil sea, the surface of this sea glitters in sunlight, appearing dynamic, splendid, and ever-changing.

When viewers enter a dark passageway, and ascend a few steps, they can see a bright sea. The square hanji pieces, covering the sea, naturally and warmly filter the artificial light LEDs exude. The light penetrating Korean paper creates a horizon when reflected onto mirrors installed on the three sides. The sea generates diverse colors alongside a whistling sound in tune with the waves. While ascending steps, viewers can experience sights and sounds, simultaneously. A musical space is made here, by adding my inspiration from nature to my synesthetic experience I heard sound in color.

I take motifs and principles for my work from music. I produce visible music and audible color by visualizing the sense of hearing and auralizing the sense of sight. I combine sound with color, creating conditions by which music and color can communicate. (Refer to the Color Notation manual.) Squares filling The Whistling Sea refer to musical measure. When color changes, notes can be heard, and melodies bring forth harmony when these notes link.
