Appreciations towards Pippa Dyrlaga for providing the following description:

Pippa Dyrlaga is a paper cutting artist using traditional papercutting techniques to create contemporary artworks. Her artwork ranges in size from ten centimetres to two metres high. She will almost always use a single, clean sheet of white paper for her work. She will first draw out a simple guide for the layout of the image. She tends to do much of her editing whilst she is working on the piece, and they can change significantly from the original layout as they progress. She will add the detail into the piece as she is cutting. All text and images must be drawn out in reverse, because the finished piece is flipped around so any pencil marks are on the back, and the final image is nice and clean. Paper is so delicate and un-forgiving; one has to be incredibly careful whilst working on it. A simple slip can destroy hours of work.

She lived on a canal boat for much of her childhood. Living in a rural place near the waterways, surrounded by the best of British wildlife, has inspired much of her work. She is also interested in older architecture and culture, and these also feature frequently in her work.

The process of making the work is as significant to Pippa Dyrlaga as the finished piece. It’s very calming and meditative. It is manual, and takes a long time. She gets a lot out of the process of making her work. It makes her feel very calm, focused and patient, which she can take away from it and use in other aspects of her life. Pippa Dyrlaga completed her Degree in Contemporary Art Practice at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2006. She then went back to the same university to complete her MA in Art and Design and Curation which she completed in 2011. She is now based in Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, where she works from a home studio.
