Why go abroad?
To receive more diversified education, to enrich my experience and to increase my knowledge.
Is there anything happened impressed you the most abroad?
Let me offer an example happened at school. There are various digital media workshops led by students at GSD every semester, which is a great way showing the saying “there is always someone to learn from”. To my surprise, at one time someone who sits next to you learning AE together could be the one who leads ladybug for grasshopper tutorial on stage next time. I still remember that once when I attended the Unity 3D workshop led by a MArch student, I was the only audience in the classroom. Thus I became the VIP for that night. While he was fully prepared and did a great job, I could tell his upset look. So I waited until the last minute and asked several questions to show my interest and gratitude. Later on when I became the teaching assistant, I totally understood how important the speaker got the support from the audiences. To put it in a nutshell, I enjoy the academic atmosphere of freedom and equality very much.
What do you miss the most about China?
It seems that everyone miss his family and good food. Moreover, maybe I miss the wisdom of earning a living and the infinite possibilities in China.
Will you come back? Why?
Yes. Let me share you a conversation I had with one of my Canadian Chinese friends. He believes that, compared to the so-called “melting pot style” American culture, Canadian culture is more like a mosaic: the mixtures of various cultural ingredients keep their individual characteristics at the same time. Personally speaking, my cultural identity makes me reluctant to be melted by American values. And I do not want to be a bystander all the time. So I’ll live and work in the U.S. for a while, but I’ll eventually go back to China. On the other hand, if I can unleash 80% of my potential in the U.S., I hope I can do 100 % when going back to China.
Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?
Not really. My understanding about China seems to be fragmented after going abroad. Every morning I wake up with Wechat poping up with news from China. Owing to the proliferation of different media, we have to see through the text, images and video full of subjective feelings and positions to understand and identify each scene happening everyday in China. But the acceleration of China’s development is undoubtedly exciting. My future career will certainly be deeply rooted in the cultural background where I grew up .
What are the educational characteristics of your school?
Many of my friends have been invited to introduce GSD in former episodes. I’m sure people are sort of familiar with GSD already. It is a very diverse and open platform, which keeps changing, so it is difficult to define it with only one adjective. Practicing designers and professor from all over the world bring the latest information, the most advanced technology and unique values, to communicate with students from different cultural backgrounds under the same roof, which is very exciting. For example, the last option studio I participated in at GSD covered students from almost all design disciplines (including MArch I, II, MLA I, II, MAUD and UP) except the design studies master programs. The final exhibition was varied in scales and design themes. Throughout the semester, our professors invited professionals from the government, the scientific community and design industry to interact with students, which was beneficial to everyone of us.
Can you discuss the characteristics of the company you are working for?
With a multi-disciplinary approach to complex design issues, West 8 has extensive experience in large-scale urban master planning and design, landscape interventions, waterfront projects, parks, squares and gardens. West 8’s New York office was established after winning an international design competition in 2006 for the design of Governors Island Park – a 172-acre island in the New York Harbor. My colleagues are very friendly. Each individual’s talent can be fully exploited here. Young people are full of vitality and dreams. Interestingly, “West 8” is reported to be a kind of wind in Netherlands after which people feel refreshing. Now this gust blew the Dutch spirit of optimism to America and the rest of the world.
Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?
Among modern painters I prefer Kaii Higashiyama. During the time when I did an internship in Japan I visited the ancient city of Nagano with friends. It was a surprise when we wandered and ran into Higashiyama museum near Zenkoji. His works are famous for the strong color, which is a typical technique of Western paintings. On the other hand, those works also convey the profound oriental aesthetics. Perhaps for the sake of being both an essayist and a painter, Higashiyama expressed his understanding of the quietness of nature with both literal language and visual language. I have found resonance with his background and experience mixed with both western and eastern culture. He was among the generation of Japanese being “overseas”. Ancient Chinese artworks had a high standard in terms of aesthetics. The architecture style in Tang Dynasty and porcelain art in Song Dynasty reflect the simplicity which I’m pursuing for. I am longing to find powerful tools like the accomplishment Higashiyama achieved to create impulses of design within the present context.
Furthermore, I also appreciate the excellent attempt of a Japanese arts organization “TeamLab” who successfully combine the interactive science and technology with traditional eastern aesthetics values, as well as works from the fine art pioneer Victo Ngai. To some extent, they share a common spirit which inspires me a lot.
What amazing character do your works have?
What’s interesting about my works is my design trial on different scales and my endeavor to clarify the logic and design intent with corresponding resolutions. From furniture design to architecture and landscape design, to urban design and landscape planning, I showed my interest in working at multiple scales.
When did you start to follow gooood? Any suggestions?
I’ve been one of the earliest audiences of Gooood since it was just founded. I hope that Gooood not only would attract design professional practitioners, but exert further influence among the general public, showing them the strong power of design.

The Emerald Necklace is the legacy from the past, the the Innovation city the future of Boston. However Today’s Boston is confronted with different challenges. Environmentally, global warming has caused sea level rising; Extreme climate condition brings up storm surge. The living environment and biodiversity are threatened. In 100 years, most areas of downtown Boston will be flooded with the sea level keeps rising.
Here come 5 ecological strategies to confront the challenges of Boston waterfront.
Firstly, to resist the surge based on the gesture of Moon Island, Long Island and Deer Island. Water Resistance strategies such as wave breakers, concrete jacks, flood wall and Rip Rap will be utilized to defend the surge. A cable car system will be set up along the Islands for the visitor to know how the the system works. Oyster will be served during the trip. After finishing the trip, Oyster shells will be collected to be the material for the wave breaker system.
Secondly, to mitigate the power of surge. Strategies like dune fences, Oyster reef will be created to strengthen the shore. Aquaculture will be set up near tidal flats. Boardwalk will be created over marshes. It offers a place for the public to have a touch with biodiversity.
Thirdly, an eco-edge system will work to adapt to everchanging waterfront situation. Jetties for sand deposition, levee for offshore water management. Tidal pool for pleasure. A bio berm will work not only protecting the shore but offering an open space for activities to happen.
Fourthly, a channel will be created to discharge redundant urban runoff and offer riverfront edges. Hard edge Strategies such as filtration terrace, waterfront amphitheater and bulkhead will be along the channel. As water level changes, the river organ will play sounds from nature. It also increases people’s access to water. In addition, because there is an overlap of the existing subway system with the channel. An underwater train system can be as a new way of sightseeing.
Last but not least, Upland green strategies will be functioning to store or delay stormwater. Rain garden, green roof and permeable pavement will help stormwater management. Urban cranberry bog maybe a new way combing pleasure with agriculture production. The existing vehicle lanes along Columbia road seems underutilized. A half of it will be transformed to rain gardens and street parking lots.
These 5 strategies will work together to help Boston waterfront confront challenges in the following century. Columbia Point will be the pilot site where the 5 strategies meet together to form a new frontier city.
1. A newly created channel start from Downtown all the way to Columbia point, offering a rich riverside condition.
2. Dense urban project will be along the channel as the innovation district, working with University of Massachusettes as an incubator.
3. Extend the Emerald Necklace. Rain gardens and urban groves along Columbia road helps stormwater management and promote micro climate.
4. The underutilized Joe Moakley Park will be renovated. Topography such as berm will help protect the water front.
5. The levee will act as a bicycle lane to connect Columbia Point with Pleasure Bay. It also helps forming a constructed wetland system which increases biodiversity as well.
6. The cable car system will be working along the shore, bringing a chance of education and pleasure.
Along the channel, the building strategies are also different. Where it’s close the the riverside, the buildings are elevated. There are green roofs collecting water. Artworks are distributed along the riverside park. The skywalk system is connecting towers.

Strasbourg is a French city where the Rhine River defines its border. France lies on the west side of Rhine and Germany on the east. Both French and German culture have deeply influenced it and reached a good mixture, which contributes to the tourism in Strasbourg. Moreover, that many European institution set up in Strasbourg makes it a Metropolitan city facing Europe.
However, there are both ecological and social problems in here. Strasbourg is located in Rhine Valley between Vosges and Black Forest mountains, resulting in poor ventilation which deteriorates air pollution and extreme temperature; Regulations of the channels in history for the development of navigation have caused the degradation of hydrology system; Land infill and power line construction have led to loss of biodiversity, such as endangered Alsace Stork; Industry development and complex transportation system on Port have made existing urban forest disconnected and generated many underutilized lands.
The design site is located at the Port area. In order to reconnect the green and blue system with an ecological corridor, as well as connect France and Germany via urban development serving Strasbourg’s objective to become a metropolis, the design proposal is to via a vertical ecological axis and a horizontal social axis to activate underutilized lands. The port besides Rhine is where the two axis meet. A series of urban development with landscape strategies in different districts will start functioning.

Wind is the medium between the landform and micro climate, which motivates people’s all senses. With the everchanging landform, parameters related with wind such as wind speed, intensity and direction keeps changing as a consequence, which results in various micro climate conditions including different moisture levels and sensible temperature.
The site is located in Coney island, New York, which is highly influenced by the monsoon and seasonal tidal conditions. The ruins caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 showed the destructive power of storm and tide on the infrastructure and living environment. The design strategy is to exert influence to the landform in order to change partial wind and tidal condition. Thus a more pleasant living environment can be created.
With the ridges going from the southwest to northeast, the wind is redirected from the ocean bringing the moisture to the inland during summer. However with the help of evergreen trees acting as living snow fences, blizzard would be blocked to some degree in winter. When spring comes, snow trapped by snow fences will start melting and gathering into creeks at the bottom of valleys. The everchanging tidal condition also contributes to forming different water environments which offer various lifestyles. Correspondingly, building form varies from waterfront-floating, intertidal-elevated to hilltop-embedded. Planting species also change from sea weed, deciduous trees to evergreen trees.

We human beings are social animals. We need mutual communication and contact with each other. By means of cooperation, we have our family, community and city. Simultaneously, we are natural animals with a primal reliance and a longing for nature. Thus we need a private space of our own with no disturbance from the outside world.
Houses function as the container of our social life. They are expected to be elastic between extraversion and introversion as well as privacy and openness. A weak link should be kept in terms of newly-established interpersonal relationship.
The project is a private residence located in Shapowei, an old port in Xiamen City. It resides between fishermen’s houses, facing the port and backed by the community.
The first floor of the building severs as the passage to the outside, connecting the community and the port. A tree grows inward, providing the association between inside and outside of the room. Semi-transparent polypropylene plastic slides partially to control the opening of the staircase. It blurs the boundary of internal and external space. It is a well-illustration of the relationship between the residents and the society and nature.

This project is from a furniture making course at MIT architecture wood workshop. Traditional woodworking techniques beginning with the use of hand tools are gained, as with power tools and finally woodworking machines. This chair is an original design which is able to support someone weighing up to 185 lbs. Maple is chosen as the material in terms of its hardness and durability. In stead of milling with CNC machine, hand making techniques help me gain a better understanding of craftsmanship from every joint and detail.
