“Instant and constant”, the landscape design of the cherry blossom garden by UAO

樱花在武汉已然成为城市旅游名片，UAO的新作“樱花游园”是在原有樱花园的一侧扩建而来。场地原址是一个废弃了的儿童游乐场地，甲方的最初的目的仅是扩建原有樱花园，将原有樱花园的面积扩展一倍，以满足越来越多赏樱的需求。

Cherry blossoms for tourists have already become a city card in Wuhan, UAO’s new work “cherry blossom garden” was expanded on one side of the original cherry blossom garden.The construction site was an abandoned children’s playground before. Party A was initially seeking to expand the original cherry garden, doubling the size of the original cherry garden to meet the growing demand for cherry blossoms of tourists.

UAO创始人李涛在看过现场故事感十足的儿童游乐攀爬设施后，觉得保留利用现场的儿童游乐设施的杆件，改造成新的一个游乐园区，应该作为设计的创意出发点，它包含两层意思：一是虽然还是樱花树的主题园区，但却包含了满足儿童游戏的一个原有场地的功能。它对原来的场地功能是一种更新式的延续；二是樱花作为非常时令的一种观赏景观，它的美在于转瞬即逝的一种“瞬时”的美，但作为一个公园，也要满足365天除了约两周15天赏樱之外的使用频率问题，而将儿童游乐功能继续保留，就满足了350天的时间的使用可能。把“瞬时的美”与“平时的乐”结合起来，将会带了怎样的碰撞感觉？

Professor Li Tao,the founder of UAO, believes that the use of the poles of children’s rides on the scene and the renovation of it into a new amusement park should serve as a starting point for creative design after seeing the full-fledged children’s climbing facilities.It contains two meanings: the first is still cherry blossoms theme park, but it can meet the children’s game as a renewed continuation of the original site update function; second is that cherry blossom is a very seasonal landscape with fleeting “instant” beauty. But as a park, it also has to meet the frequency of the two weeks of the year except for the two-week cherry blossom festival. While the children’s recreational functions continue to be retained, the use of the remaining 350 days is possible.What kind of collision feeling will be when we combine “instant beauty” with “constant beauty” together?

UAO团队在最开始，将现状的所有杆件进行了统计和分类，将可利用的原有杆件组合成一个新的方案：这个方案含有几大单元：一是利用较长的杆件，围绕场地内需要保留的几棵树，形成满足儿童游走的一个多层的廊道系统；另外就是利用较短的杆件，主要是1.25米的横向杆件，组合成一个迷宫。它充分考虑儿童的行为习惯：追逐、不知疲倦的奔跑、躲猫猫等探知行为模式。

At the beginning, UAO team made statistics and classifications of all the current status, and combined the available original rods into a new one.This project contains two units: one is to use a long rod around a few remained trees in the field，to form a multilayer corridor system for children; The other is the use of shorter rods, mainly to combine 1.25-meter-long lateral rods into a maze.It takes full account of children’s behavior habits: chasing, tireless running, hiding cats and other patterns of behavior detection.

在具体实施阶段，对原有杆件进行了检测，发现诸多杆件不能满足后期使用的结构安全需求；最后保留杆件加以利用的想法必须做出改变，但用杆件做设计的想法最后贯彻到设计始终。

In the concrete implementation phase, the original bar was tested and found that many rods could not meet the structural security needs of the late use. The idea of retaining the rod must be changed, but the idea of using the rod to design should be used throughout the design.

最后实施的方案中，杆件被组合成了一系列小品：坡道、秋千、亭子等，这些杆件小品本身就成为儿童游乐设施的一部分，同时又将场地缝合在了一起；同时它提供了驻足和观赏的场所和观景的框景，为小游园提供了趣味性，鼓励儿童去探知和发现。

In the final plan, the rods are assembled into a series of small items: ramps, swings, pavilions and so on. These pieces do not only become part of their children’s recreational facilities, but also stitching the site together. At the same time, it provides a place for people to stop and enjoy, which makes the small garden more fun and encourages children to explore.

现场的大树得以保留，新种植的樱花品种包括：云南早樱、日本早樱、染井吉野、山樱等；围绕场地形成的环形步道也成为游客健身慢跑的步道，同时将地形局部隆起，形成可以休息的坐凳。原来场地留下来的碰碰车被可以保留在了场地之中。

Original trees in the field are preserved, and the new varieties of cherry blossom include:Yunnan early Sakura, Japan early Sakura, Yoshiyoshi Yoshino, mountain cherry, etc. The circular trail around the site also becomes a walkway for the tourists to jog, while the topography is raised to form a resting seat. The bumper cars left in the original site were kept in the stadium.

UAO 想通过这样一个项目，来表达一个理念：建筑设计与景观设计之间的界限，应该是模糊和不确定的，这应该隶属景观建筑学范畴（或植物建筑学）。景观的临时性与生长性（樱花的瞬时）与建筑的坚固性与空间营造能力（杆件小品的平时存在）天然是一种对比，而景观建筑学将之模糊，景观内的一切元素（植物、坡地等）和墙、柱、杆件一样，也会是营造空间感觉的一种“材质”；通过建筑设计的空间营造方法，去解决景观的问题，扩展了传统园林设计手法的边界，以期达到现代主义景观特征的表述。

UAO wants to express an idea through such a project, that is: the boundaries between architectural design and landscape design should be vague and uncertain, which may be subordinate to landscape architecture category (or plant architecture). Temporary and growth landscape(the instant cherry blossom period) as well as solid construction with space construction ability ( constant exist of rod pieces) form a contrast naturally.The boundaries between the landscape and architecture can be blurred, all the elements of landscape (plants, slope, etc.)can be used as a “material” for creating a sense of space,just like walls, columns, and rods in architecture.We try to solve the landscape problems with space design method usually used in architecture and extend the boundaries of traditional garden design techniques in order to achieve the representation of modernist landscape features.
