The 2022 edition of the Festival des Architectures Vives received very positive feedback from the public with a number of visitors around 10,000 people. The purpose of the Festival des Architectures Vives is to raise public awareness of the broad field of architecture. It strives not only to highlight the work of a young generation of architects, landscape architects, urban planners, but also to discover unexpected urban territories.

Some installations allow interaction with the public. Without leaving physical traces, the FAV seeks to mark the spirits, to initiate a global reflection on architecture and its development in an existing urban context as well as to create a dialogue between contemporary creation and heritage. Mediators, students at the Montpellier School of Architecture are present at each location and allow visitors to better appreciate the course. The event is free, testifying to this desire to be open to as many people as possible.

Jury Prize: BOUTEILLE A LA MER
OLLEKTIV GESAMTKUNSTWERK: Killian Petracek, Anton V. Schmunk, Marcel Navid Sharifian, Kalieb Johanes, Anh Khoa Ngo, Timur Zhigaylo
Brussels, Belgium- Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Bottles are by nature subject to impermanence. Through our installation, we elevate this idea by adding a transient use to bottles in form of an interactive postbox.

We will construct a tower of empty glass bottles that function as a means of communication between visitors to the exhibition in Montpellier. With each added message, the collection of thoughts grows while the bottles’ lucency temporarily decreases. The appearance of the installation changes continuously, emphasising its impermanence.

Public Prize: UNE ILLUSION D’ETERNITE
Malo Chabrol, Lucas Buti
Marseille, France

Architecture finds its temporal anchorage in its constructive and formal dimensions. Constructive first, permanence is always sought but no building can claim any form of eternity. Formal next, it is versatile, it is subjected to the curved lines of its history. However, beyond the appearances, the invariants are still there.

Here, the installation experiment physical impermanence facing a formal permanence. Transparent Tuscan columns echoing those of the Hôtel de Griffy are placed on light seats. Under these columns will flow the matter which constitutes them. These strange hourglasses will lead the visitors to a contemplation of the disappearance of multi-millennial architectural elements. Once the matter has passed away, there will be nothing left in the courtyard but architectural forms frozen in an illusion of eternity. The materiality disappears, the form remains

Special mention: FRAGMENT
Chiara Vigneri & François Chantier
Berlin, Germany

Wabi-sabi, which has its origins in Japanese culture, can be defined as follows: simplicity, ephemerality, error, imperfection. Our project attempts to translate these terms into an installation that dialogues with the existing architecture. The goal is to reflect historical buildings in simple, elementary geometric forms.

festival des architectures vives 2022

The “fragments” scattered in the courtyard in a random and spontaneous way, of different heights, remind us of a broken object, shattered into a thousand pieces, evoking the fragility of Material – like a piece of porcelain that has been dropped – and more broadly of all things in the world: of the spirit, of life, of human societies, of cities.

By observing more closely, we can see that all these fragments come from a larger volume, forming a square in plan, a sign of a past era. A particular event, an accident, took place. We are then tempted to put the pieces back together, to repair the broken object.

▼装置与建筑,the installation and the surroundings

festival des architectures vives 2022

The partly ruined, crumbly city, the assemblies and combinations of materials, which bear the traces of time, are thus extended in the thoughts and highlight the beauty of aging, making the visitor aware, for a moment, that everything is ephemeral.

Special mention: CAELOSCOPE
Alek Rokosz
Krakow, Poland

Rarely do we lift our heads to look at the sky. The city obstructs the view, buildings dominate the landscape, leaving only narrow channels of the visible blue. This estrangement from the sky was further intensified during the recent confinement. Many of us have found ourselves locked in small apartments with no access to open space. For some, seeing the sky has become an effort, even a challenge. And to be deprived of the sky is to forget how to be free.

festival des architectures vives 2022

A Caeloscope is an instrument which aims to turn our gaze upwards again, towards the sky which is always there yet always different, an essence of impermanence and its antithesis at the same time. Caeloscope allows us to observe this relationship between the constant and the variable with the highest accuracy. The device uses a large stainless steel mirror that reflects the slightest change in the environment.

About The Festival des Architectures Vives:

The Festival des Architectures Vives is a public architectural exhibition. Visitors can discover or rediscover the historical landmarks of the city of Montpellier since 2006. The event invites visitors to interact with the rich heritage by offering installations scattered around the city. In Montpellier, it takes place in the historic town and offers a path connecting mansions and courtyards, mostly private, that are usually not accessible to visitors. The FAV is organized by Elodie Nourrigat and Jacques Brion, architects in Montpellier.
