Who is your favourite architect? Why?
It’s hard to say, depends on different periods. Also I’ve been inspired by different architects, whose own days, backgrounds, theories, styles, and priorities varies greatly. All those are initiating my thinking and focus on, or even beyond, architecture.  I like the Zaha Hadid early projects.

What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?
Actually it has no characteristics. But that doesn’t really matter. Yet there is one thing I’m pretty convinced about is that it needs change. And as for me, personal experience and thinking could bring more knowledge and inspiration than education itself in there.

What have you gained during the MAD internship?
It has broadened my horizon in architecture. Now I had close friends here. I appreciate its architectural outlook, and pretty much enjoy the work environment of MAD. They’ve got fantastic design teams composed of professional members. Working in MAD is diverting and exciting.

What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Any suggestion?
This is a broad issue. A simple topic might lead to endless discussion and criticism. For example, we usually wander off in the hutongs nearby. In sharp contrast with those skyscrapers not far away, the hutongs are far more attractive to me. There is a lack of public space in this city, a city consumed by the mania of ever-increasing FAR and density. We don’t even have a sports field or bicycle parking lots.

What is your dream?
They change with time. I would rather say that I wish to go to many places.

What would you do if you were not an architect?
They change with time. I would rather say that I wish to go to many places.

What is your dream project?
This question reminds me of the movie Transformer 3. You know what was its most fabulous part for me? Not the eye-catching action scenes, but the moment when Milwaukee Art Museum designed by Calatrava appeared, which was completely integrated into the movie, indicating its architectural influence in spite of greatness. For a while I was even distracted by the architecture while ignoring the acting.

Perhaps it is what exactly I’ve been pursuing for: a building, coming out of my mind, has a certain “influence”. This influence does not mean that something has to be changed, or that it only happens in architectural field. To me, whether people like it holds the key.

What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?
None. Each time looking back I would find something not so good as it is right now. And that is also the charm of design: endless possibility and inexhaustible source of inspiration. All you have to do is to make it better.

1.  3 Villas by the Great Wall

/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/5aa37a96f52e6470e9fa0db86f1bd4d3.jpg

These villas are designed for musicians and entertainers, located in Beijing Badaling scenic areas in the mountains. The client hopes it to provide them a place for gathering. The split-level as a design approach is used to deal with elevation difference, and to help the space maintain continuity while changing in the form. We hope to introduce the concept of  “plaza” to interior space. Then each villa could have its own identity: tranquil or vivid, private or public. At the same time, the design intends to reduce the impact which outdoor gathering place could have on nature.

2. The Reconstruction of Xi’an Train Station

/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/a2671b661b0d036f5b7d236c514e585d.jpg

Along with the soaring economy of China, like many other developing cities, Xi’an is now faced with the challenge of urban renewal. But it appears to be more sensitive to this issue when considering it is the most important city in western China with the longest history as an ancient capital. It has the ambition to become metropolis and also the attention to the preservation of its context. But the approaches to express old and new at the same time have always failed.

Eyes on the square in front of the city’s railway station. The task is to reconstruct such a place in lack of popularity, and even on the fringe of being abandoned. The concept is to turn aboveground to underground, keep the original structure, at the same time change the function, and then stimulate vitality. Meanwhile on the ground, in front of the ancient wall, the previous messy square will also become a clean and orderly urban gathering space.

This is a landscape sketch designed for the Faculty of Architecture. a landscape sketch. It’s a symbol, like a brand. Even without the name on it, or if one has never seen it before, it would easily relate it to architecture, reminded by the characteristics of architecture college students.

The office building is located Chang’an road, the most important avenue of Xi’an. Identities of the buildings along the road are archaizing, symmetry and majesty, repelling people from a distance. As a consequence, we took a twisted form to respond to the surrounding buildings, to contrast with the symmetry.
