It’s a late night in Frankfurt Alt-Sachsenhausen, inside a picturesque, baroque building from 1747: A porcelain elephant, folded like origami, is in the middle of the room, up high on a pedestal. A fountain of tonic water splashes from its mouth into the glasses of a group of people gathered around it. Different fragrances drift through the air, a whiff of yuzu, a whiff of bergamot.

We’re at BONECHINA, a dazzling new location for the art of drinking, located in Grosse Rittergasse. The minds behind it, the LINDENBERG Group (also SEVEN SWANS & THE TINY CUP, LIBERTINE), view BONECHINA more as a meditation on bars than as a bar. There is no bar counter, no bartender. The elephant at the heart of the space brings different people and stories together, like a fountain at the center of a village square.There are two hosts, and the guests can either make their drinks on their own or have the hosts prepare them, choosing from a selection of classics with home-made ingredients. The drinks are enhanced with aromatic ice-cubes, also home-made—with a wide selection of flavors ranging from vetiver to sandalwood. Tonic water, of course, flows from the elephant’s mouth. This place is all about conversations and pleasure. BONECHINA is open Tuesday to Thursday, with the other days of the week reserved for private functions, and it has room for 20 lucky guests.

BONECHINA的室内由ABERJA工作室设计。大象的尺寸与陶瓷的脆弱感之间产生强烈的对比，与几近单色调的房间发生共鸣。房间内所使用的瓷砖为法兰克福特瓷砖，是为该项目专门开发的。整个房间都被这种深蓝色瓷砖覆盖，瓷砖如同大象的皮肤般散发出柔和的光泽。家具，室内装饰和窗帘均采用柔软温和的材料，在室内蓝色与烟灰色为主的色调氛围下，和瓷砖棱角分明的清脆感形成鲜明对比。ABERJA与雕塑家MarcRammelmüller合作，使用3-D编程创造了这个抽象的折纸大象形象，这是一次将数字化设计与传统工艺的完美结合。

BONECHINA’s visual concept and design are by Studio ABERJA. The contrast between the elephant’s size and the fragility of china resonates in every detail in the nearly monochrome room. Ceramic tiles called Frankfurter Fliese, developed especially for the project, cover the room like glossy elephant skin. Soft, warm materials like the pear-wood furniture, upholstery and curtains contrast with the crisp edges of the tiles, in shades of blue and anthracite; antique masonry and brass round off the interplay of different textures. The tiles reflect the warm light; reflexes glint and sparkle everywhere on the dark porcelain. The elephant sculpture unites digital design with traditional craft: ABERJA created an abstract interpretation of the origami-inspired elephant figure in collaboration with the sculptor Marc Rammelmüller, using 3-D programming.

From a little window one storey above BONECHINA, the proud, self-appointed mayor of the district keeps an eye on everything that happens outside. He is one of the most notorious locals in Alt- Sachsenhausen, and is obviously thrilled that the construction work below him is coming to an end and the fun is about to start.
