2011年7月22日在奥斯陆和乌托瓦岛发生的恐怖袭击事件，不仅对众多个人和家庭来说是一场悲剧，对是整个社会来说也是无法抚平的创伤。一个未知的区域突然进入到了人们的社会和政治生活中。大家不得不接受一个陌生的情况。这是一个在旧地图不曾出现，在尚未开发的地区也未曾显示过的，被标记为“Terra Incognita” （未知领域）的白色区域。

The terror attack in Oslo and on the island of Utøya on July 22, 2011 created a deep crack in our concept of reality. A tragedy for many individuals and families, a trauma for society at large. An unknown territory suddenly revealed itself in the minds of our shared social and political lives. A new and unfamiliar situation arose to which we are forced to come to terms with. On old maps unknown, yet unexplored areas, where labelled as “Terra Incognita” – unknown land – and marked as white areas.

We have focused on creating an inviting and open memorial site for Trondheim’s residents and visitors to use and fill with their own thoughts, events and activities. The memorial is a spacious, calm and dignified place in Trondheim’s old city center. An unexpected break in the cityscape, a visual and spatial oasis that invites to a pause, alone or together with others.

A firm gravel covering of white local Norwegian marble creates the memorial´s floor and visual resonator. A horizontal organic topography of seven in-situ cast white concrete islands spread across an area of approximately 2000 m2. Texts are etched into the surface of the concrete islands. One island functions as an open stage for public ceremonies and events. Plants with white flowers bloom during spring, summer and autumn. A shallow pool with 77 points of light embedded in its black concrete floor – one light for each person who lost their lives in the attacks on July 22, 2011. Water inlets create gentle ripples on the water surface. On cold winter days water mist rises from the pool.

Sandblasted into the surfaces of the concrete islands are words and texts that relate to the ethical, social and political values that were attacked on July 22, 2011: openness, respect, democracy, empathy, humanity, love. The texts refer in different ways to the attacks in Oslo and on Utøya, but also function as mental bridges to the poetic and creative dimensions of reality, that can give hope and a belief in the future to the current and coming generations. Some of the texts are written by school children in Trondheim, others are written by well-known authors. The texts also function as graphical ornamentation, allowing the concrete islands to be experienced as torn out, enlarged pages from a book spread out in the memorial, where both existential and everyday thoughts and feelings linked to July 22 are given spatial and material form.
