Illustration/cartoon is a design expression method that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It can better express the inspiration source, design process, presentation effect and use scene of the project through painting works full of childlike interest and imagination. In 2010, BIG introduced architectural comics to the public with Yes Is More, a book that has become a must-read for millions of architecture students. In fact, the expression of architectural design in the form of comics/illustrations is not the exclusive of contemporary designers. In the early 1980s, a group of young graduates of the Moscow Architecture School took this expression to the extreme. They were called “architects on paper”, which led to the derivation of “Paper Architecture”. By using utopian architectural cartoons/illustrations as a way to bypass limitations and dissent, to criticize the dehumanizing nature of Russian architecture at the time, and to celebrate humanity and creativity.

Illustration/comic representation is no substitute for formal architectural drawings, but it can broaden the designer’s mind to further explore the relationship between the 2D world and 3D world, and blur the line between reality and fantasy. Italian architect and illustrator Federico Babina once said in an interview, “Every architect must interpret his work through diagrams, drawings. To give the work a form, graphic design is the first step. In this sense every architect is a graphic designer. There is an obscure and consistent relationship between architecture and art. Different branches of art meet in many areas.” Compared with construction drawings, this form of expression is more likely to convey emotion and resonate with the audience. Chinese architect Boji Hu won the 2021 Architectural Drawing Award in the mixed category for his work (Un)homeliness, which the judges described as “a powerful story told through sentimental pencil drafts”.

In addition, gooood also brings together some examples of architectural illustration/comics beyond “as a method of expression,” such as Portuguese illustrator Andre Chiote’s works, which area homage to classic architecture in a more formal form of illustration. While the fantasy worlds of illustration/comics provide inspiration for architecture, excellent architectural works also serve as inspiration for graphic design. Italian designer Giuseppe Gallo has created nine digital architectural posters inspired by BIG’s projects, showing architecture’s expression of order from different angles.
There are also many architects and designers who choose to observe and record the city in a more personalized way, and add their idea on this basis to record the moment of inspiration. When this approach is taken to the extreme, illustration/cartoon becomes a means of research. Periodical records are used to explore the development of cities and the relationship between people and cities. For designers, such urban roaming observation is undoubtedly a good way to learn and accumulate materials. Beside, we also summarize several illustrative/picture-book/comic-book recommended in our Good Books album, hoping to provide more inspiration to readers who are interested in this art form.

那就直说了,以上大部分应该去做插画师,因为画做得比建筑好。
