The renovated Shell Theatre (Central Island Performance Venue) in Beijing Chaoyang Park, delivered by DUTS design, has been officially unveiled. Adopting an integrated renewal approach that unifies architecture, landscape and spatial design, the design team departed from the conventional demolition-and-reconstruction model. Guided by the vision of a Performing Arts Center Embedded in Nature, the project reshapes the theatre’s boundaries by following the site’s original texture through a low-intervention “10% interface renewal” strategy, achieving seamless integration of nature and art.

Design Concept: Awaken the Performing Arts Center Rooted in Nature

Originally constructed as a supporting outdoor performance venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the venue sits on the central island of Chaoyang Park, surrounded by the North Lake on three sides, and serves as a core public waterfront node along the Liangma River Cultural and Economic Belt.

The renovation of Chaoyang Park’s Central Island Performance Venue aligns with the overall planning of the Liangma River International Scenic Waterfront while addressing its core spatial contradiction. Rooted in a public park, the site retains an open, natural public character and caters to citizens’ daily recreational needs, yet it must also support professional performances and enable world-class public cultural and artistic presentation. Furthermore, similar to many urban renewal projects for existing spaces, the renovation is constrained by a variety of complex conditions.

Facing multiple constraints, Zhong Ling, Founder and Principal Architect of DUTS design, proposed a precise intervention-based renewal approach: “Located on the central island of Chaoyang Park, the Shell Theatre’s greatest inherent advantage lies in its park setting. Through multi-dimensional analysis of architecture, space and landscape, we reshape the theatre’s boundaries by following the site’s original texture, dissolving the long-standing divide between the theatre and the park. This approach integrates the performance space into nature, evolving the venue into a world-class cultural and performance center grown out of its natural surroundings.”

Based on this philosophy, the design team preserves the site’s original spatial framework, ecological texture and site memory to the greatest extent. Adopting the low-intervention strategy of “10% interface renewal”, the project completes the overall renovation and unlocks the inherent potential of this waterfront site.

The core logic of the renovation lies in the adaptive interpretation of the site’s intrinsic character and the reshaping of the spatial journey between the park and the theatre.

Following the Shell Theatre’s inherent fan-shaped form, the front plaza features pavement radiating outward from the theatre’s center, seamlessly connecting architectural form, ground texture and the park environment. Visitors walking from the park into the plaza are naturally guided by the ground texture into the theatre precinct. Meanwhile, in line with the site’s original circular spatial structure, the design team introduces a set of radially arranged landscape screen walls to replace the original fully enclosed perimeter. This approach redefines the performance zone’s enclosure in a more open, permeable manner.

These context-responsive landscape walls redefine the meaning of a theatre boundary. Rather than acting as a barrier separating inside from outside, they function as viewing frames opening onto nature and serve as a medium for dialogue between the theatre and its surroundings. Through hollowed openings and folded wall sections, the park’s greenery and sky reflections on the lake are carefully framed into view. Nature is no longer a backdrop beyond the theatre, but an integral part of the performance space itself.

Sunlight filters through gaps in the walls, casting shifting geometric shadows across the ground and steps throughout the day. Winds from the woodland drift through gaps between the folded walls into the performance area, carrying the fresh scent of foliage and lake water. In spring, new leaves peek over the wall tops; in autumn, golden leaves gather at the wall bases. Seasonal rhythms gently permeate the theatre through this boundary, transforming the originally static architectural interface into a dynamic frame that evolves with natural cycles.

The clear, permeable boundaries make the layers and textures of nature more tangible. Within the theatre, visitors can keenly feel immersed in nature, watching performances unfold within the natural landscape. The theatre has thus been transformed from an enclosed viewing container into a performing arts center embedded in nature.

Unlike informal natural performance venues simply carved out of raw terrain, the Shell Theatre is a rigorously designed outdoor performance space built to high professional standards. With a stage area of over 500 square meters, the venue features seven tiers of terraced viewing lawns laid out along the natural topography. Precision-calibrated for optimal sightlines and acoustics, the theatre can accommodate an audience of 2,800 to 3,400, fully meeting the standards for high-quality outdoor artistic performances. It stands as Beijing’s first lakeside outdoor performance venue.

A flexible spatial model that alternates between separation and integration is established between the theatre and the park. During performances, the permeable boundaries can be temporarily closed to form an orderly professional performance venue. Dusk hues and natural skylight over the lake serve as a natural stage backdrop, while rustling trees and soft rippling water form a vivid ambient soundscape. Professional acoustic design blends seamlessly with the natural sound environment, giving every performance a unique natural quality. On non-performance days, the entire site opens fully to the public, reverting to its fundamental role as public park space. Terraced steps, gently sloping lawns and leisure nooks enclosed by folded walls are all accessible to citizens. Visitors may stroll by the lake, sit in quiet relaxation, enjoy family time or gather with groups. As an accessible, relaxing waterfront retreat for all, the site fully unlocks its park attributes and public vitality.

Growing Theatre in Nature with Dissolving Boundaries

Actively responding to the core concepts of the Special Plan for Beijing Garden City (2023–2035), the renovation takes ecology as its fundamental baseline. It organizes the spatial system around a seamless park-theatre-park visitor experience, fully integrating the theatre into the overall park environment with natural continuity in circulation, vegetation and water systems. On the southern side, three previously disconnected waterfront sections once separated by the theatre are now fully connected. The waterfront promenade links seamlessly with the park’s overall visitor route, transforming the theatre from an enclosed destination into a natural stop along Chaoyang Park’s waterfront landscape corridor.、

Following the original terrain elevation, the design connects waterfront viewing platforms at different elevations via terraces and flower borders, creating layered water-viewing experiences. Near-shore aquatic plants blend into the water surface, while the distant tree canopy line unfolds smoothly against the skyline. As visitors walk through, their gaze shifts freely between the water, flower borders and theatre spaces.

All existing native trees on site are fully preserved and thoughtfully integrated. Their canopies cast dappled, layered shade over the performance area, while the natural growth patterns of their root systems are fully respected. Hard paving makes way for vegetation, allowing architectural and natural textures to interlock and permeate seamlessly. The landscape planting scheme adopts native Beijing species and well-proven improved varieties adapted to the local climate. By refining understory spaces and adding ornamental grasses and perennials, the design establishes a low-maintenance garden system tailored to Beijing’s climate, with blooms across three seasons and year-round visual interest. It ultimately creates a landscape that balances ecological resilience, aesthetic appeal and humanistic warmth.

The design team introduces compound functional scenarios including art markets and casual dining along the waterfront, organically linking the natural landscape with commercial activity. The theatre has thus evolved from a single-function performance venue into a waterfront social hub integrating viewing, experience and consumption. Along the entire waterfront, shallow planting zones and scattered ornamental stones replace traditional railings as an ecological solution. While ensuring safety, this approach maximizes the waterfront’s recreational potential. Visitors can sit by the water and fully immerse themselves in the lake and natural scenery.
