Appreciation towards Territories M4 / F.Roche-C.Lacadee for providing the following description:

Alongside François Roche, Lacadee heads the ever-mutating, radically-experimental architecture studio currently-known-as New-Territories / M4. For their new project MMYST, or “mke_Me_yungR_sheltR_tmptation,” they’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign that includes what is likely one of the most wonderfully strange videos that’s ever been on the crowd-funding website.

According to the campaign description, MMYST would comprise a 140 sqm (1500 ft²) “experimental hybrid building” to be shared by humans and swiftlets, a species of bird that makes unique nests out of saliva that are prized for their culinary applications.

Sited on an outcropping of cooled-lava in the lush landscape of Thailand, MMYST would be constructed using robots and a “bio-foam with scrap wood” that resembles lava.

The core of the construction is made by a steel structure (steel post and steel balloon frame) with, as the external surface, a catenary mesh geometry joining all surfaces. The large windows are silver-coated laminated glass to protect from UV rays and reflect the landscape. Only half of them are fully transparent (human zones), the others (Swiftlet caves) are extremely dark, coated to keep the shadow atmosphere of a cave (including humidity). We will use a robotic extruder fixed on a scissor lift to make the Lava skin (in lightweight bio-expandable durable (10 years) foam / from starch-flax… in test period for now). Small scale tests and prototypes have already been done at the studio with our own Robot (Kuka 6 axes R10KR1100), as well as 3D printed models of the house.

“One of the motives behind this crowdfunding is sharing: concepts and time,” states Lacadee in the video. “As architects we now have the opportunity to address a multitude through social networks and social media.”

While the video is humorous and eccentric, the project demands serious attention. Actively invoking ecosophy, the ground-breaking field of practice developed by Felix Guattari that links “environmental ecology to social ecology and to mental ecology,” MMYST is very ambitious: seeking to activate new and complex potentials for human and non-human cohabitation, in addition to developing novel models for architecture funding, construction, and use.

The issues at play in MMYST are all deeply relevant to the ecological and economic context of today, and it’s exciting to see a project that attempts to consider them simultaneously. It’s an architectural iteration of a rare, but urgent, mode of thinking that endeavors to consider psychology, ecology, economics, and politics within a singular, but heterogeneous, mesh-like fold.

it’s a building done by robot….

It s about /

-1) A Human-Bird Mutualism for reciprocal benefits. (Mutualism is the way two organisms of different species exist in a relationship in which each individual benefits from the activity of the other).

2) A Time-Concept Sharing over 10 years, as an ‘usufruct’ transaction (including cleaning / laundry / maintenance of building and landscape / local services / see all the conditions below).

3) A Project of Architecture through several Innovations and Technologies with Computation and Robotic Fabrication to define a strategy of aesthetic in correspondence with the existing situation (expanding bio-foam with scrap wood… as a liquid rocky lava expansion). Through these Researches and Technics, the design will be developed in a “continuum morphology” (which organizes gradations between several identified structures) of the Biotopes (an equilibrium between Animal, Vegetal and Mineral) … an example of territorializing technologies.

Statement / This architecture, both ecosophical (Felix Guattari) and anthroposophical (Rudolph Steiner), hybrid of the situation, kind of bio-morphism, negotiating space and time sharing, is voluntary promoted via a crowd-funding apparatus, to open another way than the traditional delegation of power of the architecture scene, where few people decide for the others…

As architects, we now have the opportunity to address with the multitude, through the networks, social media and bottom-up … This project and this crowd-funding initiative are like a pebble (a lava stone in our case) thrown in the pond of the temptation to redefine sharing, exchanges, with attitude, with design, with high degree of technology and ecosophy… in symbiosis, in osmosis… to test a possibility of exchange for the next 10 years.

  9. linkin-young
