In Nomad Patterns, London-based Chilean artist Livia Marin offers a reflection on the relationship we develop with the day-to-day objects that populate our everyday lives. This relationship develops through the care and attachment with which we treat those often-unacknowledged objects that meet our daily needs. In a culture increasingly dominated by habits of consuming and discarding, Nomad Patterns interrogates the boundary between the attention given to precious, elite objects and the care, or lack of it, afforded to the banal or utilitarian object, often more intimate to our own daily lives. In this exhibition Marin introduces elements that are distinctive to ceramics, especially the element of decoration that gives the object its singular look and value. She transforms readymade crockery and alters the placing and scale of their decorative patterns to present a series of undetermined objects that appear paradoxically as broken yet complete. Marin’s practice has been characterized throughout by the appropriation of mass-produced and mass-consumed objects, then turned into precious and unique objects of art. This exhibition tells us something about mass-produced objects as part of our material culture and about the singularity they achieve through use and human agency over time.
