Merzbau
Merzbau is a project by a German artist Kurt Schwitters began in 1923 in Hanover for a series of room transformation of his house. With art of collage, restructuring process, he re-used the discarded building materials from which made into furniture, walls to ceiling, creating a form of decorative and structural integration, basically following certain design rules. Today, in the computational context, we tried to create a series of our own logic from the prototype “Merzbau”.

Merzbau是德国艺术家Kurt Schwitters在1923年开始的对他在汉诺威的家进行的一系列房间改造。他用艺术拼贴、结构重组的艺术手法,将废弃的建筑材料重新利用制作成家具墙面到吊顶,创造出装饰与结构一体化的形式,同时遵循着一定的设计规则。在计算机背景下的今天,我们以Merzbau为原型试图创造自己的逻辑。

From the inspiration of Island floor tiles, we find that those complex and changing patterns are from combination of initial geometries, such as triangles and rectangles, from which we get unpredictable consequences as different combination will bring unexpected results.  Therefore, starting from the plane geometries, we create two rules for division. In order to develop from two dimensions to three dimensions, we add two additional rules to complete the formal system from which the results we obtain are unexpectedly amazing.

从伊斯兰地砖的图案我们找到了灵感,那些复杂多变的纹理均来自最简单几何图案如三角形、四边形的组合,不同的组合方式会带来意想不到的结果。通过创造两套简单的规则来划分简单几何体。为了从2D到3D的转变又加入了另外两套规则。所得到的结果却是让人惊叹的。

The logic is not isolated, utopian, but actually has simple and useful features for the application. Here, we apply it to an ordinary room, a wall and a lamp, by which you can fully demonstrate the breadth of its application, and prove, “rules” are not static code, but a hand creating the ever-changing mystery.
