Educational Institution: Tianjin University

Who is your favourite architect? Why?
Antón García-Abril.
I heard about Anton while working with a legendary graduate of my school. He showed me Anton’s website and introduced me to his project Martemar House. I like the way he make the structure looks light, by using the huge-size components. I appreciate his way of using materials and space.
What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?
I just graduated from Tianjin University. There is a successful system of studying Ancient architecture in Tianjin University. I think the undergraduate course benefits from this.
What have you gained during the MAD internship?
Three best friends, Tonny, Tristan and Pilson. They make MAD like a family to me. MAD is full of talented architects and great friends. Thanks to Bas, Kin, Arkilie and Colby. The internship at MAD, offered me so many opportunities. Working here taught me how to work in a professional environment and gave me the opportunity to work on an ongoing project, where I could participate in design, and improve my architectural skills.
What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment?Any suggestion?
I would like to say, I do not hate the status quo. Everyone gets a chance to design what they think to be right. Of course if they are able to. But in order to improve our cities, I feel there should be a better integration with the context instead of building independent architecture. At the moment, international star architects use China as a playground, where they can experiment with less responsibility. The country want star architects to build here, but there should be an increased focus upon the architecture instead of the name of the architect.
What is your dream?
Better environment in Beijing.
What would you do if you were not an architect?
To be honest, I never thought about it. I just had a nice Valentine’s Day, which gives me the idea that maybe being a cook would do.
What is your dream project?
Anything with a park involved. I live beside the park, Superkilen in Copenhagen. This park offers not only a walking path and a square, but also basketball courts, different kinds of playground for extreme sports, graffiti walls, and boxing rings with sandbags beside. I think it provides energy for the entire region, and looks super cool. In my opinion, a park of this kind nearby can be the reason people fall in love with being outdoors.
What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?
I always try to combine a few ideas together. My friends keep on telling me that it is not a correct design method, how about less is more. But I am still trying to water more things on to let ideas grow. Spin Tower is my favorite one for it being relatively complete.

Anton Garcia Abril。
This “architectural design show” showed up step by step just like the dramatic scenes come to stage one by one. Time, both in the past and in the future, also plays a critical role in the “architectural part” of the “drama”: the smart growth of the city. After researching the site in Japan, I took the initiative to create a Megastructure that was primarily based around green space which would attract a certain type of visitor. The second and third phases saw the initial “smart growth” of the city, implementing the advent of a centralized medical center and eldercare center which acted as not only the center of the city, but as a way to stimulate the economy of this metropolis by providing more job opportunities. The final stages of the project adapted the city to global disaster. The city grew vertically in order to continue to thrive amidst future environmental complications. This project takes a look at a dystopian future while projecting utopian ideals for the city, reacting both programmatically, functionally and formally to climatic and socio-economic changes.

HAHA..Good Job, Jin!
